Fujita-Zariski decompositions on some product threefolds

We use explicit blow-ups and computations of birational Fujita-Zariski decompositions to determine generic infinitesimal Newton-Okounkov bodies for box-product ample polarizations on three classes of spaces: product between a curve and the projective plane, products of three curves, and the product between a curve and a Jacobian surface. In particular we compute the volume of many big but non-nef divisors on blow-ups of these threefolds.

Infinitesimal successive minima, partial jets and convex geometry

We introduce two sets of invariants for a line bundle at a point: infinitesimal successive minima and asymptotic partial jet separation. They are inspired by the local analogue of Ambro-Ito, and by the jet-theoretic interpretation of the Seshadri constant respectively. Under mild restrictions the two sets are equal. Moving to convex geometry, we prove that the lengths of the maximal simplex inside the generic infinitesimal Newton-Okounkov body (iNObody) of the line bundle at the point are precisely the successive minima. As application we characterize when this body is simplicial, and give examples when it is not. When the point is very general the convex body has a shape that we call Borel-fixed, a property inspired by generic initial ideals. Borel-fixed convex bodies satisfy simplicial lower bounds and polytopal upper bounds determined by their widths. For the generic iNObody of the line bundle at very general points these widths are again the infinitesimal successive minima.

Seshadri constants of indecomposable polarized abelian varieties

The goal of this note is to study a conjectural picture on lower bounds of Seshadri constants of indecomposable polarized abelian varieties. This is inspired by some ideas of Debarre on the subject and the author's previous work on syzygies of abelian threefolds using the convex geometry of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

Multiplicities of irreducible theta divisors

Let $(A,Θ)$ be a complex principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g\geq 4$. Based on vanishing theorems, differentiation techniques and intersection theory, we show that whenever the theta divisor $Θ$ is irreducible, its multiplicity at any point is at most $g-2$. This improves work of Kollár, Smith-Varley, and Ein-Lazarsfeld. We also introduce some new ideas to study the same type of questions for pluri-theta divisors.

Singular divisors and syzygies of polarized abelian threefolds

We provide numerical conditions for a polarized abelian threefold $(A,L)$ to have simple syzygies, in terms of property $(N_p)$ and the vanishing of Koszul cohomology groups $K_{p,1}$. We rely on a reduction method of Lazarsfeld-Pareschi-Popa, convex geometry of Newton-Okounkov bodies, inversion of adjunction techniques from work on Fujita's conjecture, and the use of differentiation by Ein-Lazarsfeld-Nakamye. As a by-product, we construct effective divisors in any ample class of high self-intersetion, whose singularities are all concentrated on an abelian subvariety. This can be seen as the dual picture considered by Ein-Lazarsfeld for theta divisors.

A Reider-type theorem for higher syzygies on abelian surfaces

Building on the theory of infinitesimal Newton--Okounkov bodies and previous work of Lazarsfeld--Pareschi--Popa, we present a Reider-type theorem for higher syzygies of ample line bundles on abelian surfaces. As an application of our methods we confirm a conjecture of Gross and Popescu on abelian surfaces with a very ample primitive polarization of type $(1,d)$, whenever $d\geq 23$.

A few questions about curves on surfaces

In this note we address the following kind of question: let X be a smooth, irreducible, projective surface and D a divisor on X$satisfying some sort of positivity hypothesis, then is there some multiple of D depending only on X which is effective or movable? We describe some examples, discuss some conjectures and prove some results that suggest that the answer should in general be negative, unless one puts some really strong hypotheses either on D or on X.

Infinitesimal Newton-Okounkov bodies and jet separation

In this paper we explore the connection between asymptotic base loci and Newton-Okounkov bodies associated to infinitesimal flags. Analogously to the surface case, we obtain complete characterizations of augmented and restricted base loci. Interestingly enough, an integral part of the argument is a study of the relationship between certain simplices contained in Newton-Okoukov bodies and jet separation; our results also lead to a convex geometric description of moving Seshadri constants.

Local positivity of linear series on surfaces

We study asymptotic invariants of linear series on surfaces with the help of Newton-Okounkov polygons. Our primary aim is to understand local positivity of line bundles in terms of convex geometry. We work out characterizations of ample and nef line bundles in terms of their Newton-Okounkov bodies, treating the infinitesimal case as well. One of the main results is a description of moving Seshadri constants via infinitesimal Newton-Okounkov polygons. As an illustration of our ideas we reprove results of Ein-Lazarsfeld on Seshadri constants on surfaces.

Volume functions of linear series

The volume of a Cartier divisor is an asymptotic invariant, which measures the rate of growth of sections of powers of the divisor. It extends to a continuous, homogeneous, and log-concave function on the whole Néron--Severi space, thus giving rise to a basic invariant of the underlying projective variety. Analogously, one can also define the volume function of a possibly non-complete multigraded linear series. In this paper we will address the question of characterizing the class of functions arising on the one hand as volume functions of multigraded linear series and on the other hand as volume functions of projective varieties. In the multigraded setting, relying on the work of Lazarsfeld and Mustaţă (2009) on Okounkov bodies, we show that any continuous, homogeneous, and log-concave function appears as the volume function of a multigraded linear series. By contrast we show that there exists countably many functions which arise as the volume functions of projective varieties. We end the paper with an example, where the volume function of a projective variety is given by a transcendental formula, emphasizing the complicated nature of the volume in the classical case.

Okounkov bodies of finitely generated divisors

We show that the Okounkov body of a big divisor with finitely generated section ring is a rational simplex, for an appropriate choice of flag; furthermore, when the ambient variety is a surface, the same holds for every big divisor. Under somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we also show that the corresponding semigroup is finitely generated.

Vanishing theorems and the multigraded regularity of nonsingular subvarieties

Given scheme-theoretic equations for a nonsingular subvariety, we prove that the higher cohomology groups for suitable twists of the corresponding ideal sheaf vanish. From this result, we obtain linear bounds on the multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a nonsingular subvariety, and new criteria for the embeddings by adjoint line bundles to be projectively normal. A special case of our work recovers the vanishing theorem of Bertram, Ein, and Lazarsfeld.

Convex bodies appearing as Okounkov bodies of divisors

Based on the work of Okounkov (\cite{Ok96}, \cite{Ok03}), Lazarsfeld and Musta\c t\u a (\cite{LM08}) and Kaveh and Khovanskii (\cite{KK08}) have independently associated a convex body, called the Okounkov body, to a big divisor on a smooth projective variety with respect to a complete flag. In this paper we consider the following question: what can be said about the set of convex bodies that appear as Okounkov bodies? We show first that the set of convex bodies appearing as Okounkov bodies of big line bundles on smooth projective varieties with respect to admissible flags is countable. We then give a complete characterisation of the set of convex bodies that arise as Okounkov bodies of $\R$-divisors on smooth projective surfaces. Such Okounkov bodies are always polygons, satisfying certain combinatorial criteria. Finally, we construct two examples of non-polyhedral Okounkov bodies. In the first one, the variety we deal with is Fano and the line bundle is ample. In the second one, we find a Mori dream space variety such that under small perturbations of the flag the Okounkov body remains non-polyhedral.

Regularity of smooth curves in biprojective spaces

Maclagan and Smith \cite{MaclaganSmith} developed a multigraded version of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Based on their definition we will prove in this paper that for a smooth curve $C\subseteq ¶^a\times¶^b$ $(a, b\geq 2)$ of bidegree $(d_1,d_2)$ with nondegenerate birational projections the ideal sheaf $\mathcal{I}_{C|¶^a\times¶^b}$ is $(d_2-b+1,d_1-a+1)$-regular. We also give an example showing that in some cases this bound is the best possible.
