Nonequilibrium enhancement of high-temperature superconductivity in a 3D model of cuprates

Recent experiments in the cuprates have seen evidence of a transient superconducting state upon optical excitation polarized along the c-axis [R. Mankowsky et al., Nature 516, 71 (2014)]. Motivated by these experiments we propose an extension of the single-layer $t-J-V$ model of cuprates to three dimensions in order to study the effects of inter-plane tunneling on the competition between superconductivity and bond density wave order. We find that an optical pump can suppress the charge order and simultaneously enhance superconductivity, due to the inherent competition between the two. We also provide an intuitive picture of the physical mechanism underlying this effect. Furthermore, based on a simple Floquet theory we estimate the magnitude of the enhancement.

Resonant Faraday and Kerr effects due to in-gap states on the surface of a topological insulator

When Dirac electrons on the surface of a topological insulator are gapped, the resulting quantum anomalous Hall effect leads to universal magneto-optical Faraday and Kerr effects in the low frequency limit. However, at higher frequencies different excitations can leave their own fingerprints on the magneto-optics and can therefore be probed. In particular, we investigate the role of localized in-gap states---which inevitably appear in the presence of charged impurities---on these higher frequency magneto-optical effects. We have shown that these states resonantly contribute to the Hall conductivity and are magneto-optically active. These in-gap states lead to peculiar resonant signatures in the frequency dependence of the Faraday and Kerr angles, distinct in character to the contribution of in-gap excitonic states, and can be probed in ellipsometry measurements.

Synthetic 3D Spin-Orbit Coupling

We describe a method for creating a three-dimensional analogue to Rashba spin-orbit coupling in systems of ultracold atoms. This laser induced coupling uses Raman transitions to link four internal atomic states with a tetrahedral geometry, and gives rise to a Dirac point that is robust against environmental perturbations. We present an exact result showing that such a spin-orbit coupling in a fermionic system always rise to a molecular bound state.

Entanglement dynamics in a non-Markovian environment: an exactly solvable model

We study the non-Markovian effects on the dynamics of entanglement in an exactly-solvable model that involves two independent oscillators each coupled to its own stochastic noise source. First, we develop Lie algebraic and functional integral methods to find an exact solution to the single-oscillator problem which includes an analytic expression for the density matrix and the complete statistics, i.e., the probability distribution functions for observables. For long bath time-correlations, we see non-monotonic evolution of the uncertainties in observables. Further, we extend this exact solution to the two-particle problem and find the dynamics of entanglement in a subspace. We find the phenomena of `sudden death' and `rebirth' of entanglement. Interestingly, all memory effects enter via the functional form of the energy and hence the time of death and rebirth is controlled by the amount of noisy energy added into each oscillator. If this energy increases above (decreases below) a threshold, we obtain sudden death (rebirth) of entanglement.

Squeezed noise due to two-level system defects in superconducting resonator circuits

Motivated by recent surprising experimental results for the noise output of superconducting microfabricated resonators used in quantum computing applications and astronomy, we develop a fully quantum theoretical model to describe quantum dynamics of these circuits. Building on theoretical techniques from quantum optics, we calculate the noise in the output voltage due to two-level system (TLS) defects. The theory predicts squeezing for the noise in the amplitude quadrature with respect to the input noise, which qualitatively reproduces the noise ellipse observed in experiment. We show that noise enhancement along the phase direction persists for pump frequencies away from resonance. Our results also suggest that intrinsic TLS fluctuations must be incorporated in the model in order to describe the experimentally observed dependence of the phase noise on input power.

Dynamic Stimulation of Quantum Coherence in Lattice Bosons

Thermal fluctuations tend to destroy long-range phase correlations. Consequently, bosons in a lattice will undergo a transition from a phase-coherent superfluid as the temperature rises. Contrary to common intuition, however, we show that non-equilibrium driving can be used to reverse this thermal decoherence. This is possible because the energy distribution at equilibrium is rarely optimal for the manifestation of a given quantum property. We demonstrate this in the Bose-Hubbard model by calculating the non-equilibrium spatial correlation function with periodic driving. We show that the non-equilibrium phase boundary between coherent and incoherent states at finite bath temperatures can be made qualitatively identical to the familiar zero-temperature phase diagram, and we discuss the experimental manifestation of this phenomenon in cold atoms.

Majorana path integral for nonequilibrium dynamics of two-level systems

We present a new field-theoretic approach to anaylize non-equilirbium dynamics of two-level systems (TLS), which is based on a correspondence between a driven TLS and a Majorana fermion field theory coupled to bosonic fields. This approach allows us to calculate analytically properties of non-linear TLS dynamics with an arbitrary accuracy. We apply our method to analyze specific TLS dynamics under a monochromatic periodic drive that is relevant to the problem of decoherence in Josephson junction qubits. It is demonstrated that the method gives the precise positions of the resonance peaks in the non-linear dielectric response function that are in agreement with numerical simulations.

Interferometry with Synthetic Gauge Fields

We propose a compact atom interferometry scheme for measuring weak, time-dependent accelerations. Our proposal uses an ensemble of dilute trapped bosons with two internal states that couple to a synthetic gauge field with opposite charges. The trapped gauge field couples spin to momentum to allow time dependent accelerations to be continuously imparted on the internal states. We generalize this system to reduce noise and estimate the sensitivity of such a system to be S~10^-7 m / s^2 / Hz^1/2.
