Efficient Description of Parametric Amplification of Quantum Pulses

A single quantum pulse undergoing parametric amplification feeds into at most two pulses in the output. In this work, we present an efficient, analytical method for finding the quantum state of these output modes. Our method applies the amplification to the vacuum rather than to the input state, and subsequently applies a transformed version of the operator that creates the input state from vacuum. Given the input and output pulse mode functions, the method is analytical, and therefore computationally very efficient, and it can be readily generalized to multiple non-vacuum input modes. We exemplify the method by computing the output quantum states resulting from the input of a coherent, a Schrödinger cat, and a single photon input quantum state. We further employ the method to obtain the quantum state in one of the two output modes heralded upon detection of vacuum in the other, least populated, mode.

Phase-space open-systems dynamics of second-order nonlinear interactions with pulsed quantum light

The theoretical description of broadband, multimode quantum pulses undergoing a second-order $χ^{(2)}$-nonlinear interaction can be quite intricate, due to the large dimensionality of the underlying phase space. However, in many cases only a few broadband (temporal) modes are relevant before and after the nonlinear interaction. Here we present an efficient framework to calculate the relation between the quantum states at the input and output of a nonlinear element in their respective relevant modes. Since the number of relevant input and output modes may differ, resulting in an open quantum system, we introduce the generalized Bloch-Messiah decomposition (GBMD), reducing the description to an equal number of input and output modes. The GBMD enables us to calculate the multimode Wigner function of the output state by convolving the rescaled Wigner function of the reduced input quantum pulse with a multivariate Gaussian phase-space function. We expand on this result by considering two examples input states: A Fock state in a single broadband mode and a two-mode squeezed vacuum, both in the THz-frequency regime, up-converted to a single output broadband mode of optical frequencies. We investigate the effect, the convolution and thermalization due to entanglement breakage have on the output Wigner function by calculating the von Neumann entropy of the output Wigner function. The methods presented here can be used to optimize the amplification or frequency conversion of broadband quantum states, opening an avenue to the generation and characterization of optical quantum states on ultrafast time scales.

Interactions in Quantum Networks with Pulse Propagation Delays

The finite speed of light of pulses implies propagation delays between the generation of light, the interaction with different elements along its path and the final detection at the output of networks and interferometers. We show that it is possible to take these delays into account with a theoretical method which evades quantization of the full continuum of field modes. We illustrate the use of this method by analyzing Ramsey excitation of an atom by a split and delayed quantum pulse.

Subtraction and Addition of Propagating Photons by Two-Level Emitters

Coherent manipulation of quantum states of light is key to photonic quantum information processing. In this Letter, we show that a passive two-level nonlinearity suffices to implement non-Gaussian quantum operations on propagating field modes. In particular, the collective light-matter interaction can efficiently extract a single photon from a multi-photon input wave packet to an orthogonal temporal mode. We accurately describe the single-photon subtraction process by elements of an intuitive quantum-trajectory model. By employing this process, quantum information protocols gain orders of magnitude improved efficiency over heralded schemes with linear optics. The reverse process can be used to add photons one-by-one to a single wave-packet mode and compose arbitrarily large Fock states with a finite total success probability $>96.7\%$.

Jaynes-Cummings interaction with a traveling light pulse

The Jaynes-Cummings model provides a simple and accurate description of the interaction between a two-level quantum emitter and a single mode of quantum radiation. Due to the multimode continuum of eigenmodes in free space and in waveguides, the Jaynes-Cummings model should not be expected to properly describe the interaction between an emitter and a traveling pulse of quantum radiation. In this article, we review a cascaded quantum system approach that accurately describes the interaction of a quantum system with an incident quantum pulse of radiation. This approach leads to different formulations of the theory, each of a similar structure as the Jaynes-Cummings model but with important modifications.

Parametric Amplification of a Quantum Pulse

Creating and manipulating quantum states of light requires nonlinear interactions, but while nonlinear optics is inherently multi-mode, quantum optical analyses are often done with single-mode approximations. We present a multi-mode theory for the transformation of a quantum pulse by Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the field creation and annihilation operators. Our theory describes nonlinear processes, such as parametric amplification and squeezing, as well as all linear processes, such as dispersion and beam splitting. We show that a single input pulse feeds only two distinct output modes and, for certain quantum states, just one. Our theory provides the quantum states in the output modes, which are crucial for the application of pulses in quantum optics and quantum information.

Interaction of quantum systems with single pulses of quantized radiation

The interaction of a propagating pulse of quantum radiation with a localized quantum system can be described by a cascaded master equation with a distinct initially populated input and a finally populated output field mode [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 123604 (2019), arXiv:1902.09833v3]. By transformation to an appropriate interaction picture, we identify the usual Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian between the scatterer and a superposition of the initial and final mode, with a strength given by the travelling pulse mode amplitude. The transformation also identifies a coupling of the scatterer with an orthogonal combination of the two modes. The transformed master equation offers important insights into the system dynamics and it permits numerically efficient solutions.
