Homology of non-$k$-overlapping discs

In this paper we describe the homology and cohomology of some natural bimodules over the little discs operad, whose components are configurations of non-$k$-overlapping discs. At the end we briefly explain how this algebraic structure intervenes in the study of spaces of non-$k$-equal immersions.

On the rational homology of high dimensional analogues of spaces of long knots

We study high-dimensional analogues of spaces of long knots. These are spaces of compactly-supported embeddings (modulo immersions) of $\mathbb{R}^m$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$. We view the space of embeddings as the value of a certain functor at $\mathbb{R}^m$, and we apply manifold calculus to this functor. Our first result says that the Taylor tower of this functor can be expressed as the space of maps between infinitesimal bimodules over the little disks operad. We then show that the formality of the little disks operad has implications for the homological behavior of the Taylor tower. Our second result says that when $2m+1<n$, the singular chain complex of these spaces of embeddings is rationally equivalent to a direct sum of certain finite chain complexes, which we describe rather explicitly.

Real Homotopy Theory of Semi-Algebraic Sets

We complete the details of a theory outlined by Kontsevich and Soibelman that associates to a semi-algebraic set a certain graded commutative differential algebra of "semi-algebraic differential forms" in a functorial way. This algebra encodes the real homotopy type of the semi-algebraic set in the spirit of the DeRham algebra of differential forms on a smooth manifold. Its development is needed for Kontsevich's proof of the formality of the little cubes operad.

Delooping totalization of a multiplicative operad

The paper shows that under some conditions the totalization of a cosimplicial space obtained from a multiplicative operad is a double loop space of the space of derived morphisms from the associative operad to the operad itself.

Dyer-Lashof-Cohen operations in Hochschild cohomology

We give explicit formulae for operations in Hochschild cohomology which are analogous to the operations in the homology of double loop spaces. As a corollary we obtain that any brace algebra in finite characteristic is always a restricted Lie algebra.

Hodge decomposition in the homology of long knots

The paper describes a natural splitting in the rational homology and homotopy of the spaces of long knots. This decomposition presumably arises from the cabling maps in the same way as a natural decomposition in the homology of loop spaces arises from power maps. The generating function for the Euler characteristics of the terms of this splitting is presented. Based on this generating function we show that both the homology and homotopy ranks of the spaces in question grow at least exponentially. Using natural graph-complexes we show that this splitting on the level of the bialgebra of chord diagrams is exactly the splitting defined earlier by Dr. Bar-Natan. In the Appendix we present tables of computer calculations of the Euler characteristics. These computations give a certain optimism that the Vassiliev invariants of order > 20 can distinguish knots from their inverses.

Coformality and the rational homotopy groups of spaces of long knots

We show that the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence which computes the rational homotopy groups of the space of long knots in ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d\ge 4$, collapses at the $E^2$ page. The main ingredients in the proof are Sinha's cosimplicial model for the space of long knots and a coformality result for the little balls operad.

The rational homology of spaces of long knots in codimension >2

We determine the rational homology of the space of long knots in R^d for $d\geq4$. Our main result is that the Vassiliev spectral sequence computing this rational homology collapses at the E^1 page. As a corollary we get that the homology of long knots (modulo immersions) is the Hochschild homology of the Poisson algebras operad with a bracket of degree d-1, which can be obtained as the homology of an explicit graph complex and is in theory completely computable. Our proof is a combination of a relative version of Kontsevich's formality of the little d-disks operad and of Sinha's cosimplicial model for the space of long knots arising from Goodwillie-Weiss embedding calculus. As another ingredient in our proof, we introduce a generalization of a construction that associates a cosimplicial object to a multiplicative operad. Along the way we also establish some results about the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequences of a truncated cosimplicial space.

Homotopy graph-complex for configuration and knot spaces

In the paper we prove that the primitive part of the Sinha homology spectral sequence E^2-term for the space of long knots is rationally isomorphic to the homotopy E^2-term. We also define natural graph-complexes computing the rational homotopy of configuration and of knot spaces.

What is 1-term relation for higher homology of long knots

Vassiliev's spectral sequence for long knots is discussed. Briefly speaking we study what happens if the strata of non-immersions are ignored. Various algebraic structures on the spectral sequence are introduced. General theorems about these structures imply, for example, that the bialgebra of chord diagrams is polynomial for any field of coefficients.

Calculus of the first non-trivial 1-cocycle of the space of long knots

For the space of long knots in R^3, Vassiliev's theory defines the so called finite order cocycles. Zero degree cocycles are finite type knot invariants. The first non-trivial cocycle of positive dimension in the space of long knots has dimension one and order three. We apply Vassiliev's combinatorial formula, and find the value mod 2 of this cocycle on the 1-cycles that are obtained by dragging knots one along the other or by rotating around a fixed line.

On the homology of the spaces of long knots

This paper is a little more detailed version of math-QA/0010017 "Sur l'homologie des espaces de nœuds non-compacts", where the first term of the Vassiliev spectral sequence (computing the homology of the space of long knots in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\ge 3$) was described in terms of the Hochschild homology of the Poisson algebras operad for $d$ odd, and of the Gerstenhaber algebras operad for $d$ even. In particular, the bialgebra of chord diagrams arises as some subspace of this homology. The homology in question is the space of characteristic classes for Hochschild cohomology of Poisson (resp. Gerstenhaber) algebras considered as associative algebras. The paper begins with necessary preliminaries on operads. Also a simplification of the computations of the first term of the Vassiliev spectral sequence is given.

Sur l'homologie des espaces de noeuds non-compacts

The spectral sequence constructed by V.A.Vassiliev computes the homology of the spaces of non-compact knots in ${\bf R}^d$, $d\ge 3$. In this work the first term of this spectral sequence is described in terms of the homology of the Hochschild complex for the Poisson algebras operad, if d is odd (resp. for the Gerstenhaber algebras operads, if d is even). In particular the bialgebra of chord diagrams arises as some subspace of this homology (in this case d=3). Also a simplification for the calculation of the Vassiliev spectral sequence in the first term is provided.
