Direct observation of the exchange anisotropy in the helimagnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

The helical magnetic structures of cubic chiral systems are well-explained by the competition among Heisenberg exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, cubic anisotropy, and anisotropic exchange interaction (AEI). Recently, the role of the latter has been argued theoretically to be crucial for the low-temperature phase diagram of the cubic chiral magnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, which features tilted conical and disordered skyrmion states for a specific orientation of the applied magnetic field ($μ_0 \vec{\mathrm{H}} \parallel [001]$). In this study, we exploit transmission resonant x-ray scattering ($t-$REXS) in vector magnetic fields to directly quantify the strength of the AEI in Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, and measure its temperature dependence. We find that the AEI continuously increases below 50\,K, resulting in a conical spiral pitch variation of $10\%$ in the (001) plane. Our results contribute to establishing the interaction space that supports tilted cone and low-temperature skyrmion state formation, facilitating the goals for both a quantitative description and eventual design of the diverse spiral states existing amongst chiral magnets.

Effect of intense x-ray free-electron laser transient gratings on the magnetic domain structure of Tm:YIG

Magnetic patterns can be controlled globally using fields or spin polarized currents. In contrast, the local control of the magnetization on the nanometer length scale remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate how magnetic domain patterns in a Tm-doped yttrium iron garnet (Tm:YIG) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be permanently and locally imprinted by high intensity photon pulses of a hard x-ray transient grating (XTG). Micromagnetic simulations provide a qualitative understanding of the observed changes in the orientation of magnetic domains in Tm:YIG and XTG-induced changes. The presented results offer a route for the local manipulation of the magnetic state using hard XTG.

Doping control of magnetism and emergent electromagnetic induction in high-temperature helimagnets

Ac current-driven motions of spiral spin textures can give rise to emergent electric fields acting on conduction electrons. This in turn leads to the emergent electromagnetic induction effect which may realize quantum inductor elements of micrometer size. ${\rm YMn}_{6}{\rm Sn}_{6}$ is a helimagnet with a short helical period (2-3 nm) that shows this type of emergent inductance beyond room temperature. To identify the optimized materials conditions for ${\rm YMn}_{6}{\rm Sn}_{6}$-type room-temperature emergent inductors, we have investigated emergent electromagnetic inductance (EEMI) as the magnetism is modified through systematic partial substitution of Y by Tb. By small angle neutron scattering and inductance measurements, we have revealed that the pinning effect on the spin-helix translational mode by Tb doping selectively and largely suppresses the negative component of EEMI, while sustaining the positive inductance arising from the spin tilting mode. We also find that in addition to the spin helix, even the spin-collinear antiferromagnetic structure can host the positive EEMI due to thermally enhanced spin fluctuations. The present study highlights the facile control of both the magnitude and sign of EEMI beyond room temperature, and thus suggests a route to expand the range of emergent inductor candidate materials.

Unveiling the anisotropic fractal magnetic domain structure in bulk crystal of antiskyrmion-host (Fe,Ni,Pd)$_3$P by small-angle neutron scattering

Intermetallic Pd-doped (Fe,Ni)$_3$P, that crystalizes in a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal structure with $S_4$ symmetry, has recently been discovered to host magnetic antiskyrmions, antivortex-like topological spin textures. In this material, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interactions play a significant role, giving rise to finely branched magnetic domain patterns near the surface of bulk crystals, as revealed by a previous magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurement. However, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a more suitable method for characterizing bulk properties and fractal structures at the mesoscopic length scale. In this study, using SANS and MFM, we quantitatively investigate the magnetic domain structure in bulk single crystals of (Fe$_{0.63}$Ni$_{0.30}$Pd$_{0.07}$)$_3$P. The SANS results demonstrate that the magnetic domain structure exhibits anisotropic fractal character on the length scale down to the width of the magnetic domain walls. The fractal features are gradually lost in magnetic fields, and different field dependences are observed at 300 K and 2 K due to a temperature-dependent anisotropy. This study quantifies the fractality of the highly anisotropic magnetic domain structures in an antiskyrmion material, and highlights the versatility of SANS for the study of fractal structures in magnetic systems.

Topological melting of the metastable skyrmion lattice in the chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$

In a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, we demonstrate that the magnetic field-driven collapse of a room temperature metastable topological skyrmion lattice passes through a regime described by a partial topological charge inversion. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the magnetization distribution was observed directly as the magnetic field was swept antiparallel to the original skyrmion core magnetization, i.e. negative magnetic fields. Due to the topological stability of skyrmions, a direct transition of the metastable skyrmion lattice to the equilibrium helical state is avoided for increasingly negative fields. Instead, the metastable skyrmion lattice gradually transforms into giant magnetic bubbles separated by $2π$ domain walls. Eventually these large structures give way to form a near-homogeneously magnetized medium that unexpectedly hosts a low density of isolated skyrmions with inverted core magnetization, and thus a total topological charge of reduced size and opposite sign compared with the initial state. A similar phenomenon has been observed previously in systems hosting ordered lattices of magnetic bubbles stabilized by the dipolar interaction and called "topological melting". With support from numerical calculations, we argue that the observed regime of partial topological charge inversion has its origin in the topological protection of the starting metastable skyrmion state.

Role of Dy on the magnetic properties of orthorhombic DyFeO3

Orthoferrites are a class of magnetic materials with a magnetic ordering temperature above 600 K, predominant G-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe-spin system and, depending on the rare-earth ion, a spin reorientation of the Fe spin taking place at lower temperatures. DyFeO3 is of particular interest since the spin reorientation is classified as a Morin transition with the transition temperature depending strongly on the Dy-Fe interaction. Here, we report a detailed study of the magnetic and structural properties of microcrystalline DyFeO3 powder and bulk single crystal using neutron diffraction and magnetometry between 1.5 and 450 K. We find that, while the magnetic properties of the single crystal are largely as expected, the powder shows strongly modified magnetic properties, including a modified spin reorientation and a smaller Dy-Fe interaction energy of the order of 10 μeV. Subtle structural differences between powder and single crystal show that they belong to distinct magnetic space groups. In addition, the Dy ordering at 2 K in the powder is incommensurate, with a modulation vector of 0.0173(5) c*, corresponding to a periodicity of ~58 unit cells.

Tuning topological spin textures in size-tailored chiral magnet insulator particles

Topological spin textures such as skyrmions hold high potential for use as magnetically active elements in diverse near-future applications. While skyrmions in metallic multilayers attract great attention in this context, unleashing the myriad potential of skyrmions for various applications requires the discovery and customization of alternative host system paradigms. Here we developed and applied a chemical method to synthesize octahedral particles of the chiral insulating skyrmion host Cu2OSeO3 with both narrow size distribution, and tailored dimensions approaching the nanoscale. Combining magnetometry and neutron scattering experiments with micromagnetic simulations, we show that the bulk phase diagram of Cu2OSeO3 changes dramatically below octahedral heights of 400 nm. Further particle size-dependent regimes are identified where various topological spin textures such as skyrmions, merons and bobbers can stabilize, prior to a lower critical octahedral height of approx. 190 nm below which no topological spin texture is found stable. These findings suggest conditions under which sparse topological spin textures confined to chiral magnet nanoparticles can be stable, and provide fresh potential for insulator-based application paradigms.

Conical spin order with chiral quadrupole helix in CsCuCl3

Here we report a resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) study at the Cu L3 edge on the multi-chiral system CsCuCl3, exhibiting helical magnetic order in a chiral crystal structure. RXD is a powerful technique to disentangle electronic degrees of freedom due to its sensitivity to electric monopoles (charge), magnetic dipoles (spin), and electric quadrupoles (orbital). We characterize electric quadrupole moments around Cu ascribed to the unoccupied Cu 3d orbital, whose quantization axis is off the basal plane. Detailed investigation of magnetic reflections reveals additional sinusoidal modulations along the principal axis superimposed on the reported helical structure, i.e., a longitudinal conical (helical-butterfly) structure. The out-of-plane modulations imply significant spin-orbit interaction despite S = 1/2 of Cu2+.

Emergence of spin-orbit coupled ferromagnetic surface state derived from Zak phase in a nonmagnetic insulator FeSi

A chiral compound FeSi is a nonmagnetic narrow-gap insulator, exhibiting peculiar charge and spin dynamics beyond a simple band-structure picture. Those unusual features have been attracting renewed attention from topological aspects. Although a signature of surface conduction was indicated according to size-dependent resistivity in bulk crystals, its existence and topological properties remain elusive. Here we demonstrate an inherent surface ferromagnetic-metal state of FeSi thin films and its strong spin-orbit-coupling (SOC) properties through multiple characterizations of the two-dimensional (2D) conductance, magnetization and spintronic functionality. Terminated covalent-bonding orbitals constitute the polar surface state with momentum-dependent spin textures due to Rashba-type spin splitting, as corroborated by unidirectional magnetoresistance measurements and first-principles calculations. As a consequence of the spin-momentum locking, non-equilibrium spin accumulation causes magnetization switching. These surface properties are closely related to the Zak phase of the bulk band topology. Our findings propose another route to explore noble-metal-free materials for SOC-based spin manipulation.

Metastable solitonic states in the strained itinerant helimagnet FeGe

The tensile strain is a promising tool for creation and manipulation of magnetic solitonic textures in the chiral helimagnets via tunable control of magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, by using the in-situ resonant small-angle x-ray scattering we demonstrate that the skyrmion and chiral soliton lattices can be achieved as metastable states in FeGe lamella as distinct states or even simultaneously by combining the tensile strain and magnetic fields in various orientations with respect to the deformation. The small-angle scattering data are discussed in the frame of the analytical model which is sufficient to describe the experimental results for soliton lattice. By using the experimental results and analytical theory, unwinding of the metastable skyrmions in the perpendicular magnetic field as seen by small-angle scattering experiment was analyzed by the micromagnetic simulation.

Development of the magnetism in the solid solution of the candidate Weyl semimetals Ce$_x$Pr$_{1-x}$AlGe

We investigate the macroscopic and microscopic physical properties of the solid solution of Ce$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$AlGe. The series tunes from CeAlGe with its multi-$\vec{k}$ structure and a major Moment in the ab-plane, to PrAlGe with an easy-c-axis ferromagnetic ground state co-existing with a low density of nanoscale textured magnetic Domain walls. Using AC-, DC-susceptiblity, resistivity, specific heat, muon spin relaxation/rotation and neutron scattering we analyze the magnetic ground state of the series. We provide further evidence supporting our previous claim for spin-glass like properties in pure PrAlGe. With introduction of Pr to CeAlGe the finite magnetic field required to stabilize the topological multi-$\vec{k}$ magnetic phase for $x=0$ becomes suppressed. The crossover between the two end-member ground states occurs in the vicinity of $x=0.3$, a region where we further anticipate the field-induced topological magnetic phase for $x < 0.3$ to become the zero field ground state.

Metamagnetic transitions and magnetoelectric responses in a chiral polar helimagnet Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$

Magnetic-field effect on the magnetic and electric properties in a chiral polar ordered corundum Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ has been investigated. Single-crystal soft x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements confirm long-wavelength magnetic modulation. The modulation direction tends to align along the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, suggesting that the nearly proper-screw type helicoid should be formed below 77\,K. The application of a high magnetic field causes a metamagnetic transition. In a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, a helix-to-canted antiferromagnetic transition takes place through the intermediate soliton lattice type state. On the other hand, a magnetic field applied along the polar axis induces a first-order metamagnetic transition. These metamagnetic transitions accompany a change in the electric polarization along the polar axis.

Stabilization of $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ epitaxial layer on MgO(111)/GaN via an intermediate $γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$-phase

In the present study we have demonstrated epitaxial stabilization of the metastable magnetically-hard $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ phase on top of a thin MgO(111) buffer layer grown onto the GaN (0001) surface. The primary purpose to introduce a 4\,nm-thick buffer layer of MgO in between Fe$_2$O$_3$ and GaN was to stop thermal migration of Ga into the iron oxide layer. Though such migration and successive formation of the orthorhombic GaFeO$_3$ was supposed earlier to be a potential trigger of the nucleation of the isostructural $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, the present work demonstrates that the growth of single crystalline uniform films of epsilon ferrite by pulsed laser deposition is possible even on the MgO capped GaN. The structural properties of the 60\,nm thick Fe$_2$O$_3$ layer on MgO / GaN were probed by electron and x-ray diffraction, both suggesting that the growth of $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ is preceded by formation of a thin layer of $γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. The presence of the magnetically hard epsilon ferrite was independently confirmed by temperature dependent magnetometry measurements. The depth-resolved x-ray and polarized neutron reflectometry reveal that the 10\,nm iron oxide layer at the interface has a lower density and a higher magnetization than the main volume of the $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ film. The density and magnetic moment depth profiles derived from fitting the reflectometry data are in a good agreement with the presence of the magnetically degraded $γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ transition layer between MgO and $\varepsilon$-Fe$_2$O$_3$. The natural occurrence of the interface between magnetoelectric $\varepsilon$- and spin caloritronic $γ$- iron oxide phases can enable further opportunities to design novel all-oxide-on-semiconductor devices.

Large Anomalous Hall Effect in Topological Insulators with Proximitized Ferromagnetic Insulators

We report a proximity-driven large anomalous Hall effect in all-telluride heterostructures consisting of ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 and topological insulator (Bi,Sb)2Te3. Despite small magnetization in the (Bi,Sb)2Te3 layer, the anomalous Hall conductivity reaches a large value of 0.2e2/h in accord with a ferromagnetic response of the Cr2Ge2Te6. The results show that the exchange coupling between the surface state of the topological insulator and the proximitized Cr2Ge2Te6 layer is effective and strong enough to open the sizable exchange gap in the surface state.

Néel-type skyrmion lattice in tetragonal polar magnet VOSe$_2$O$_5$

Formation of the triangular skyrmion-lattice is found in a tetragonal polar magnet VOSe$_2$O$_5$. By magnetization and small-angle neutron scattering measurements on the single crystals, we identify a cycloidal spin state at zero field and a Néel-type skyrmion-lattice phase under a magnetic field along the polar axis. Adjacent to this phase, another magnetic phase of an incommensurate spin texture is identified at lower temperatures, tentatively assigned to a square skyrmion-lattice phase. These findings exemplify the versatile features of Néel-type skyrmions in bulk materials, and provide a unique occasion to explore the physics of topological spin textures in polar magnets.
