Block-diagonal reduction of matrices over commutative rings I. (Decomposition of modules vs decomposition of their support)

Consider rectangular matrices over a commutative ring R. Assume the ideal of maximal minors factorizes, I_m(A)=J_1*J_2. When is A left-right equivalent to a block-diagonal matrix? (When does the module/sheaf Coker(A) decompose as the corresponding direct sum?) If R is not an elementary divisor ring (i.e. not a close relative of a principal ideal ring) one needs additional assumptions on A. No necessary and sufficient criterion for such block-diagonal reduction is known. In this part we establish the following: * The persistence of (in)decomposability under the change of rings. For example, the passage to Noetherian/local/complete rings, the decomposability of A over a graded ring R vs the decomposability of Coker(A) locally at the points of Proj(R), the restriction to a subscheme in Spec(R). * The necessary and sufficient condition for decomposability of square matrices in the case: det(A)=f_1*f_2 is not a zero divisor and f_1,f_2 are co-prime. As an immediate application we give criteria of simultaneous (block-)diagonal reduction for tuples of matrices over a field, i.e. linear determinantal representations.

Towards a noncommutative theory of Cowen-Douglas class of noncommuting operators

The classical Cowen-Douglas class of (commuting tuples of) operators possessing an open set of (joint) eigenvalues of finite constant multiplicity was introduced by Cowen and Douglas, generalizing the backward shifts. Their unitary equivalence classes are determined by the equivalence classes of certain hermitian holomorphic vector bundles associated with them on this set. This article develops a free noncommutative analogue of Cowen-Douglas theory to explore the notion of vector bundles in the setting of free noncommutative function theory. We define the noncommutative Cowen-Douglas class using matricial joint eigenvalues, as envisioned by Taylor, and show via the Taylor-Taylor series that the associated joint eigenspaces naturally form such a vector bundle, what we call a noncommutative hermitian holomorphic vector bundle. A key result is that the unitary equivalence class of a tuple in this class is completely determined by the equivalence class of its associated noncommutative vector bundle. This work lays the groundwork of the noncommutative hermitian geometry, which investigates noncommutative analogues of complex manifolds, vector bundles, and hermitian metrics by drawing on ideas from both complex hermitian geometry and operator theory. We also examine noncommutative reproducing kernel Hilbert space models and introduce the noncommutative Gleason problem, showing that elements of the noncommutative Cowen-Douglas class are essentially (up to unitary equivalence) adjoints of left multiplication operators by noncommuting independent variables in a noncommutative reproducing kernel Hilbert space.

Strictly Stable Hurwitz Polynomials and their Determinantal Representations

We establish various certifying determinantal representation results for a polynomial that contains as a factor a prescribed multivariable polynomials that is strictly stable on a tube domain. The proofs use a Cayley transform in combination with the Matrix-valued Hermitian Positivstellensatz developed in ArXiv:1501.05527.

Infinite-dimensional moment-SOS hierarchy for nonlinear partial differential equations

We formulate a class of nonlinear {evolution} partial differential equations (PDEs) as linear optimization problems on moments of positive measures supported on infinite-dimensional vector spaces. Using sums of squares (SOS) representations of polynomials in these spaces, we can prove convergence of a hierarchy of finite-dimensional semidefinite relaxations solving approximately these infinite-dimensional optimization problems. As an illustration, we report on numerical experiments for solving the heat equation subject to a nonlinear perturbation.

Realizations of non-commutative rational functions around a matrix centre, II: The lost-abbey conditions

In a previous paper the authors generalized classical results of minimal realizations of non-commutative (nc) rational functions, using nc Fornasini--Marchesini realizations which are centred at an arbitrary matrix point. In particular, it was proved that the domain of regularity of a nc rational function is contained in the invertibility set of a corresponding pencil of any minimal realization of the function. In this paper we prove an equality between the domain of a nc rational function and the domain of any of its minimal realizations. As for evaluations over stably finite algebras, we show that the domain of the realization w.r.t any such algebra coincides with the so called matrix domain of the function w.r.t the algebra. As a corollary we show that the domain of regularity and the stable extended domain coincide. In contrary to both the classical case and the scalar case -- where every matrix coefficients which satisfy the controllability and observability conditions can appear in a minimal realization of a nc rational function -- the matrix coefficients in our case have to satisfy certain equations, called linearized lost-abbey conditions, which are related to Taylor--Taylor expansions in nc function theory.

Free noncommutative hereditary kernels: Jordan decomposition, Arveson extension, kernel domination

We discuss a (i) quantized version of the Jordan decomposition theorem for a complex Borel measure on a compact Hausdorff space, namely, the more general problem of decomposing a general noncommutative kernel (a quantization of the standard notion of kernel function) as a linear combination of completely positive noncommutative kernels (a quantization of the standard notion of positive definite kernel). Other special cases of (i) include: the problem of decomposing a general operator-valued kernel function as a linear combination of positive kernels (not always possible), of decomposing a general bounded linear Hilbert-space operator as a linear combination of positive linear operators (always possible), of decomposing a completely bounded linear map from a $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal A}$ to an injective $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal L}({\mathcal Y})$ as a linear combination of completely positive maps from ${\mathcal A}$ to ${\mathcal L}({\mathcal Y})$ (always possible). We also discuss (ii) a noncommutative kernel generalization of the Arveson extension theorem (any completely positive map $ϕ$ from a operator system ${\mathbb S}$ to an injective $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal L}({\mathcal Y})$ can be extended to a completely positive map $ϕ_e$ from a $C^*$-algebra containing ${\mathbb S}$ to ${\mathcal L}({\mathcal Y})$), and (iii) a noncommutative kernel version of a Positivstellensatz (i.e., finding a certificate to explain why one kernel is positive at points where another given kernel is positive).

Noncommutative Christoffel-Darboux Kernels

We introduce from an analytic perspective Christoffel-Darboux kernels associated to bounded, tracial noncommutative distributions. We show that properly normalized traces, respectively norms, of evaluations of such kernels on finite dimensional matrices yield classical plurisubharmonic functions as the degree tends to infinity, and show that they are comparable to certain noncommutative versions of the Siciak extremal function. We prove estimates for Siciak functions associated to free products of distributions, and use the classical theory of plurisubharmonic functions in order to propose a notion of support for noncommutative distributions. We conclude with some conjectures and numerical experiments.

Realizations of non-commutative rational functions around a matrix centre, I: synthesis, minimal realizations and evaluation on stably finite algebras

In this paper we generalize classical results regarding minimal realizations of non-commutative (nc) rational functions using nc Fornasini-Marchesini realizations which are centred at an arbitrary matrix point. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a minimal realization for every nc rational function, centred at an arbitrary matrix point in its domain of regularity. Moreover, we show that using this realization we can evaluate the function on all of its domain (of matrices of all sizes) and also with respect to any stably finite algebra. As a corollary we obtain a new proof of the theorem by Cohn and Amitsur, that equivalence of two rational expressions over matrices implies the expressions are equivalent over all stably finite algebras. Applications to the matrix valued and the symmetric cases are presented as well.

Pole placement for overdetermined 2D systems

We formulate and solve a pole placement problem by state feedback for overdetermined 2D systems modeled by commutative operator vessels. In this setting, the transfer function of the system is given by a meromorphic bundle map between two holomorphic vector bundles of finite rank over the normalization of a projective plane algebraic curve. The obstruction for a solution is given by an existence of a certain meromorphic bundle map on the input bundle. Reducing to the 1D case, this gives a functional obstruction which is equivalent to the classical pole placement theorem. Our result improves on, and gives a new approach to pole placement even in the classical case, and answers a question of Ball and Vinnikov.

Multipartite rational functions

Consider a tensor product of free algebras over a field $k$, the so-called multipartite free algebra $A=k \langle X^{(1)}\rangle\otimes\cdots\otimes k\langle X^{(G)}\rangle$. It is well-known that $A$ is a domain, but not a fir nor even a Sylvester domain. Inspired by recent advances in free analysis, formal rational expressions over $A$ together with their matrix representations in $M_{n_1}(k)\otimes\cdots\otimes M_{n_G}(k)$ are employed to construct a skew field of fractions $U$ of $A$, whose elements are called multipartite rational functions. It is shown that $U$ is the universal skew field of fractions of $A$ in the sense of Cohn. As a consequence a multipartite analog of Amitsur's theorem on rational identities relating evaluations in matrices over $k$ to evaluations in skew fields is obtained. The characterization of $U$ in terms of matrix evaluations fits naturally into the wider context of free noncommutative function theory, where multipartite rational functions are interpreted as higher order noncommutative rational functions with an associated difference-differential calculus and linear realization theory. Along the way an explicit construction of the universal skew field of fractions of $D\otimes k\langle X\rangle$ for an arbitrary skew field $D$ is given using matrix evaluations and formal rational expressions.

de Branges spaces on compact Riemann surfaces and a Beurling-Lax type theorem

Using the notion of commutative operator vessels, this work investigates de Branges-Rovnyak spaces whose elements are sections of a line bundle of multiplicative half-order differentials on a compact real Riemann surface. As a special case, we obtain a Beurling-Lax type theorem in the setting of the corresponding Hardy space on a finite bordered Riemann surface.

Integrability of Free Noncommutative Functions

Noncommutative functions are graded functions between sets of square matrices of all sizes over two vector spaces that respect direct sums and similarities. They possess very strong regularity properties (reminiscent of the regularity properties of usual analytic functions) and admit a good difference-differential calculus. Noncommutative functions appear naturally in a large variety of settings: noncommutative algebra, systems and control, spectral theory, and free probability. Starting with pioneering work of J.L. Taylor, the theory was further developed by D.-V. Voiculescu, and established itself in recent years as a new and extremely active research area. The goal of the present paper is to establish a noncommutative analog of the Frobenius integrability theorem: we give necessary and sufficient conditions for higher order free noncommutative functions to have an antiderivative.

Local theory of free noncommutative functions: germs, meromorphic functions and Hermite interpolation

Free analysis is a quantization of the usual function theory much like operator space theory is a quantization of classical functional analysis. Basic objects of free analysis are noncommutative functions. These are maps on tuples of matrices of all sizes that preserve direct sums and similarities. This paper investigates the local theory of noncommutative functions. The first main result shows that for a scalar point $Y$, the ring $O_Y$ of uniformly analytic noncommutative germs about $Y$ is an integral domain and admits a universal skew field of fractions, whose elements are called meromorphic germs. A corollary is a local-global rank principle that connects ranks of matrix evaluations of a matrix $A$ over $O_Y$ with the factorization of $A$ over $O_Y$. Different phenomena occur for a semisimple tuple of non-scalar matrices $Y$. Here it is shown that $O_Y$ contains copies of the matrix algebra generated by $Y$. In particular, there exist nonzero nilpotent uniformly analytic functions defined in a neighborhood of $Y$, and $O_Y$ does not embed into a skew field. Nevertheless, the ring $O_Y$ is described as the completion of a free algebra with respect to the vanishing ideal at $Y$. This is a consequence of the second main result, a free Hermite interpolation theorem: if $f$ is a noncommutative function, then for any finite set of semisimple points and a natural number $L$ there exists a noncommutative polynomial that agrees with $f$ at the chosen points up to differentials of order $L$. All the obtained results also have analogs for (non-uniformly) analytic germs and formal germs.

Carathéodory functions on Riemann surfaces and reproducing kernel spaces

Carathéodory functions, i.e. functions analytic in the open upper half-plane and with a positive real part there, play an important role in operator theory, $1D$ system theory and in the study of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. The Herglotz integral representation theorem associates to each Carathéodory function a positive measure on the real line and hence allows to further examine these subjects. In this paper, we study these relations when the Riemann sphere is replaced by a real compact Riemann surface. The generalization of Herglotz's theorem to the compact real Riemann surface setting is presented. Furthermore, we study de Branges-Rovnyak spaces associated with functions with positive real-part defined on compact Riemann surfaces. Their elements are not anymore functions, but sections of a related line bundle.

How to count zeroes of polynomials on quadrature domains using the Bezout matrix

Classically, the Bezout matrix or simply Bezoutian of two polynomials is used to locate the roots of the polynomial and, in particular, test for stability. In this paper, we develop the theory of Bezoutians on real Riemann surfaces of dividing type. The main result connects the signature of the Bezoutian of two real meromorphic functions to the topological data of their quotient, which can be seen as the generalization of the classical Cauchy index. As an application, we propose a method to count the number of zeroes of a polynomial in a quadrature domain using the inertia of the Bezoutian. We provide examples of our method in the case of simply connected quadrature domains.

Commuting operators over Pontryagin spaces with applications to system theory

In this paper we extend vessel theory, or equivalently, the theory of overdetermined $2D$ systems to the Pontryagin space setting. We focus on realization theorems of the various characteristic functions associated to such vessels. In particular, we develop an indefinite version of de Branges-Rovnyak theory over real compact Riemann surfaces. To do so, we use the theory of contractions in Pontryagin spaces and the theory of analytic kernels with a finite number of negative squares. Finally, we utilize the indefinite de Branges-Rovnyak theory on compact Riemann surfaces in order to prove a Beurling type theorem on indefinite Hardy spaces on finite bordered Riemann surfaces.

H${}^2$ Spaces of Non-Commutative Functions

We define the Hardy spaces of free noncommutative functions on the noncommutative polydisc and the noncommutative ball and study their basic properties. Our technique combines the general methods of noncommutative function theory and asymptotic formulae for integration over the unitary group. The results are the first step in developing the general theory of free noncommutative bounded symmetric domains on the one hand and in studying the asymptotic free noncommutative analogues of classical spaces of analytic functions on the other.
