Random Multiplicative Functions and Making Squares from Polynomial Values

For a large family of polynomials $P(X)\in \mathbb{Z}[X]$, we prove central limit theorems for $\sum_{n\le N} f(P(n))$ for both Rademacher and extended Rademacher multiplicative functions $f$. To achieve this, we establish a paucity phenomenon in counting solutions to \[P(n_1)P(n_2)P(n_3)P(n_4) = \square, \quad 1\le n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4 \le N.\] Results of Hooley, Evertse--Silverman, and Reuss play an important role in the proof. Our estimates are sharpest for $°P = 2$, thanks to the rich theory of Pell--Fermat equations.

Average sizes of mixed character sums

We prove that the average size of a mixed character sum $$\sum_{1\le n \le x} χ(n) e(nθ) w(n/x)$$ (for a suitable smooth function $w$) is on the order of $\sqrt{x}$ for all irrational real $θ$ satisfying a weak Diophantine condition, where $χ$ is drawn from the family of Dirichlet characters modulo a large prime $r$ and where $x\le r$. In contrast, it was proved by Harper that the average size is $o(\sqrt{x})$ for rational $θ$. Certain quadratic Diophantine equations play a key role in the present paper.

Harper's beyond square-root conjecture

We explain how the (shifted) Ratios Conjecture for $L(s,χ)$ would extend a randomization argument of Harper from a conductor-limited range to an unlimited range of ``beyond square-root cancellation'' for character twists of the Liouville function. As a corollary, the Liouville function would have nontrivial cancellation in arithmetic progressions of modulus just exceeding the well-known square-root barrier. Morally, the paper passes from random matrices to random multiplicative functions.

Pairs of commuting integer matrices

We prove upper and lower bounds on the number of pairs of commuting $n\times n$ matrices with integer entries in $[-T,T]$, as $T\to \infty$. Our work uses Fourier analysis and leads us to an analysis of exponential sums involving matrices over finite fields. These are bounded by combining a stratification result of Fouvry and Katz with a new result about the flatness of the commutator Lie bracket.

Asymptotic growth of translation-dilation orbits

By studying some Clausen-like multiple Dirichlet series, we complete the proof of Manin's conjecture for sufficiently split smooth equivariant compactifications of the translation-dilation group over the rationals. Secondary terms remain elusive in general.

Diagonal cubic forms and the large sieve

Let $N(X)$ be the number of integral zeros $(x_1,\dots,x_6)\in [-X,X]^6$ of $\sum_{1\le i\le 6} x_i^3$. Works of Hooley and Heath-Brown imply $N(X)\ll_εX^{3+ε}$, if one assumes automorphy and GRH for certain Hasse--Weil $L$-functions. Assuming instead a natural large sieve inequality, we recover the same bound on $N(X)$. This is part of a more general statement, for diagonal cubic forms in $\geq 4$ variables, where we allow approximations to Hasse--Weil $L$-functions.

Optimal sums of three cubes in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$

We use the circle method to prove that a density 1 of elements in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ are representable as a sum of three cubes of essentially minimal degree from $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, assuming the Ratios Conjecture and that the characteristic is bigger than 3. Roughly speaking, to do so, we upgrade an order of magnitude result to a full asymptotic formula that was conjectured by Hooley in the number field setting.

A nonabelian circle method

We count integral quaternion zeros of $γ_1^2 \pm \dots \pm γ_n^2$, giving an asymptotic when $n\ge 9$, and a likely near-optimal bound when $n=8$. To do so, we introduce a new, nonabelian delta symbol method, which is of independent interest. Our asymptotic at height $X$ takes the form $cX^{4n-8} + O(X^{3n+\varepsilon})$ for suitable $c \in \mathbb{C}$ and any $\varepsilon>0.$ We construct special subvarieties implying that, in general, $3n+\varepsilon$ can be at best improved to $3n-2.$

Special cubic zeros and the dual variety

Let $F$ be a diagonal cubic form over $\mathbb{Z}$ in $6$ variables. From the dual variety in the delta method of Duke--Friedlander--Iwaniec and Heath-Brown, we unconditionally extract a weighted count of certain special integral zeros of $F$ in regions of diameter $X \to \infty$. Heath-Brown did the same in $4$ variables, but our analysis differs and captures some novel features. We also put forth an axiomatic framework for more general $F$.

Prime Hasse principles via Diophantine second moments

We show that almost all primes $p\not\equiv \pm 4 \bmod{9}$ are sums of three cubes, assuming a conjecture due to Hooley, Manin, et al. on cubic fourfolds. This conjecture is approachable under standard statistical hypotheses on geometric families of $L$-functions.

Paucity phenomena for polynomial products

Let $P(x)\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ be a polynomial with at least two distinct complex roots. We prove that the number of solutions $(x_1, \dots, x_k, y_1, \dots, y_k)\in [N]^{2k}$ to the equation \[ \prod_{1\le i \le k} P(x_i) = \prod_{1\le j \le k} P(y_j)\neq 0 \] (for any $k\ge 1$) is asymptotically $k!N^{k}$ as $N\to +\infty$. This solves a question first proposed and studied by Najnudel. The result can also be interpreted as saying that all even moments of random partial sums $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}\sum_{n\le N}f(P(n))$ match standard complex Gaussian moments as $N\to +\infty$, where $f$ is the Steinhaus random multiplicative function.

Notes on zeta ratio stabilization

This semi-expository note clarifies the extent to which recent ideas in homological stability can resolve the Ratios Conjecture over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. For large fixed $q$, a uniform power saving at distance $\ge q^{-δ}$ from the critical line is possible. This implies cancellation-beyond-GRH in arbitrarily large ranges of moduli relative to the family of $L$-functions. It has applications to the statistics of low-lying zeros.

Partial sums of typical multiplicative functions over short moving intervals

We prove that the $k$-th positive integer moment of partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions over the interval $(x, x+H]$ matches the corresponding Gaussian moment, as long as $H\ll x/(\log x)^{2k^2+2+o(1)}$ and $H$ tends to infinity with $x$. We show that properly normalized partial sums of typical multiplicative functions arising from realizations of random multiplicative functions have Gaussian limiting distribution in short moving intervals $(x, x+H]$ with $H\ll X/(\log X)^{W(X)}$ tending to infinity with $X$, where $x$ is uniformly chosen from $\{1,2,\dots, X\}$, and $W(X)$ tends to infinity with $X$ arbitrarily slowly. This makes some initial progress on a recent question of Harper.

Sums of three cubes over a function field

We use a function field version of the circle method to prove that a positive proportion of elements in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ are representable as a sum of three cubes of minimal degree from $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, assuming a suitable form of the Ratios Conjecture and that the characteristic is greater than 3. The analogue of this conjecture for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions is known for large fixed $q$, via recent developments in homological stability.

Sums of cubes and the Ratios Conjectures

Works of Hooley and Heath-Brown imply a near-optimal bound on the number $N$ of integral solutions to $x_1^3+\dots+x_6^3 = 0$ in expanding regions, conditional on automorphy and GRH for certain Hasse--Weil $L$-functions; for regions of diameter $X\ge 1$, the bound takes the form $N\le C(\varepsilon) X^{3+\varepsilon}$ ($\varepsilon>0$). We attribute the $\varepsilon$ to several subtly interacting proof factors; we then remove the $\varepsilon$ assuming some standard number-theoretic hypotheses, mainly featuring the Ratios and Square-free Sieve Conjectures. In fact, our softest hypotheses imply conjectures of Hooley and Manin on $N$, and show that almost all integers $a\not\equiv \pm 4 \bmod{9}$ are sums of three cubes. Our fullest hypotheses are capable of proving power-saving asymptotics for $N$, and producing almost all primes $p\not\equiv \pm 4 \bmod{9}$.

Dichotomous point counts over finite fields

We establish a near dichotomy between randomness and structure for the point counts of arbitrary projective cubic threefolds over finite fields. Certain "special" subvarieties, not unlike those in the Manin conjectures, dominate. We also prove new general results for projective hypersurfaces. Our work continues a line of inquiry initiated by Hooley.

1-color-avoiding paths, special tournaments, and incidence geometry

We discuss two approaches to a recent question of Loh: must a 3-colored transitive tournament on $N$ vertices have a 1-color-\emph{avoiding} path of vertex-length at least $N^{2/3}$? This question generalizes the Erdős--Szekeres theorem on monotone subsequences. First, we define three canonical transformations on these tournaments called Color, Record, and Dual. We use these to establish a reduction to special tournaments with natural geometric and combinatorial properties. In many cases (including all known tight examples), these tournaments have recursive Gallai decompositions. Not all relevant tournaments have Gallai decompositions, but those that do satisfy the desired $N^{2/3}$ bound by recent work of Wagner, roughly analogous to earlier work of Fox, Grinshpun, and Pach on a similar \emph{undirected} problem. Second, we consider the related geometric problem of bounding \emph{slice-increasing} sets $S\subseteq [n]^3$, which---under an additional ordering hypothesis on $S$---was shown by Loh to be equivalent to the original question. In particular, we establish a rigorous connection from a problem of Szabó and Tardos, raise a stronger $L^2$-question on slice-counts, and mention a surprising overlap with the joints problem.
