Stratifying quotient stacks and moduli stacks

Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.

Algebraic symplectic analogues of additive quotients

Motivated by the study of hyperkahler structures in moduli problems and hyperkahler implosion, we initiate the study of non-reductive hyperkahler and algebraic symplectic quotients with an eye towards those naturally tied to projective geometry, like cotangent bundles of blow-ups of linear arrangements of projective space. In the absence of a Kempf-Ness theorem for non-reductive quotients, we focus on constructing algebraic symplectic analogues of additive quotients of affine spaces, and obtain hyperkahler structures on large open subsets of these analogues by comparison with reductive analogues. We show that the additive analogue naturally arises as the central fibre in a one-parameter family of isotrivial but non-symplectomorphic varieties coming from the variation of the level set of the moment map. Interesting phenomena only possible in the non-reductive theory, like non-finite generation of rings, already arise in easy examples, but do not substantially complicate the geometry.

Stratifications for moduli of sheaves and moduli of quiver representations

We study the relationship between two stratifications on parameter spaces for coherent sheaves and for quiver representations: a stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types and a stratification arising from the geometric invariant theory construction of the associated moduli spaces of semistable objects. For quiver representations, both stratifications coincide, but this is not quite true for sheaves. We explain why the stratifications on various Quot schemes do not coincide and see that the correct parameter space to compare such stratifications is the stack of coherent sheaves. Then we relate these stratifications for sheaves and quiver representations using a generalisation of a construction of Álvarez-Cónsul and King.

Stratifications associated to reductive group actions on affine spaces

For a complex reductive group G acting linearly on a complex affine space V with respect to a character, we show two stratifications of V associated to this action (and a choice of invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of the maximal compact subgroup of G) coincide. The first is Hesselink's stratification by adapted 1-parameter subgroups and the second is the Morse theoretic stratification associated to the norm square of the moment map. We also give a proof of a version of the Kempf-Ness theorem which states that the GIT quotient is homeomorphic to the symplectic reduction (both taken with respect to the character). Finally, for the space of representations of a quiver of fixed dimension, we show that the Morse theoretic stratification and Hesselink's stratification coincide with the stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types.

Quotients of unstable subvarieties and moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type

When a reductive group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective scheme $X$ there is a stratification of $X$ into $G$-invariant locally closed subschemes, with an open stratum $X^{ss}$ formed by the semistable points in the sense of Mumford's geometric invariant theory which has a categorical quotient $X^{ss} \to X//G$. In this article we describe a method for constructing quotients of the unstable strata. As an application, we construct moduli spaces of sheaves of fixed Harder-Narasimhan type with some extra data (an '$n$-rigidification') on a projective base.

Stratifications of parameter spaces for complexes by cohomology types

We study a collection of stability conditions (in the sense of Schmitt) for complexes of sheaves over a smooth complex projective variety indexed by a positive rational parameter. We show that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of a complex for small values of this parameter encodes the Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of the cohomology sheaves of this complex. Finally we relate a stratification into locally closed subschemes of a parameter space for complexes associated to these stability parameters with the stratification by Harder-Narasimhan types.
