Untangling Selberg from the Wilson spool: 1-loop determinants and trace formulae in (A)dS$_{3}$

Leading quantum effects in perturbative quantum gravity are captured by functional determinants of kinetic operators. We study such 1-loop determinants in three-dimensional Euclidean (anti-) de Sitter gravity evaluated using two seemingly disparate tools, the Selberg zeta function and the Wilson spool. For the Euclidean BTZ black hole, we demonstrate the Wilson spool for massive bosons of arbitrary spin directly equates to a representation-theoretic version of the Selberg zeta function. In the case of Euclidean de Sitter, we show a new trace formula associated with the Fredholm determinant for the scalar Laplacian on the three-sphere reproduces the Wilson spool. Generalizing the trace formula, we comment on how to extend this Wilson spool construction to lens space quotients and higher-dimensional spheres.

Proposal of the KOTO II experiment

The KOTO II experiment is proposed to measure the branching ratio of the decay $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ at J-PARC. With a beamline to extract long-lived neutral kaons at 5 degrees from a production target, the single event sensitivity of the decay is $8.5\times 10^{-13}$, which is much smaller than the Standard Model prediction $3\times 10^{-11}$. This allows searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model and the first discovery of the decay with a significance exceeding $5\sigma$. As the only experiment proposed in the world dedicated to rare kaon decays, KOTO II will be indispensable in the quest for a complete understanding of flavor dynamics in the quark sector. Moreover, by combining efforts from the kaon community worldwide, we plan to develop the KOTO II detector further and expand the physics reach of the experiment to include measurements of the branching ratio of the $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, studies of other $K_L$ decays, and searches for dark photons, axions, and axion-like particles. KOTO II will therefore obtain a comprehensive understanding of $K_L$ decays, providing further constraints on new physics scenarios with existing $K^+$ results.

Love symmetry in higher-dimensional rotating black hole spacetimes

We develop a method for constructing a 1-parameter family of globally-defined Love symmetry generators in rotating black hole spacetimes of general dimension. The key ingredient is to focus on the vicinity of the (physical) outer horizon, matching only the radial derivative and the outer horizon pole pieces of the Klein--Gordon operator in the black hole spacetime to the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Casimir operator. After revisiting the 4D Kerr and 5D Myers--Perry cases, the procedure is illustrated on generalized Lense--Thirring spacetimes which describe a wide variety of slowly rotating black hole metrics in any number of dimensions. Such spacetimes are known to admit an extended tower of Killing tensor and Killing vector symmetries and, as demonstrated in this paper, allow for separability of the massive scalar wave equation in Myers--Perry-like coordinates. Interestingly, separability also occurs in the horizon-penetrating Painlev{\'e}--Gullstrand coordinates associated with the freely infalling observer who registers flat space around her all the way to singularity.

A generalized Selberg zeta function for flat space cosmologies

Flat space cosmologies (FSCs) are time dependent solutions of three-dimensional (3D) gravity with a vanishing cosmological constant. They can be constructed from a discrete quotient of empty 3D flat spacetime and are also called shifted-boost orbifolds. Using this quotient structure, we build a new and generalized Selberg zeta function for FSCs, and show that it is directly related to the scalar 1-loop partition function. We then propose an extension of this formalism applicable to more general quotient manifolds $\mathcal M/\mathbb Z$, based on representation theory of fields propagating on this background. Our prescription constitutes a novel and expedient method for calculating regularized 1-loop determinants, without resorting to the heat kernel. We compute quasinormal modes in the FSC using the zeroes of a Selberg zeta function, and match them to known results.

CFT Duals for Black Rings and Black Strings

Holographic dualities between certain gravitational theories in four and five spacetime dimensions and 2D conformal field theories (CFTs) have been proposed based on hidden conformal symmetry exhibited by the radial Klein-Gordon (KG) operator in a so-called near-region limit. In this paper, we examine hidden conformal symmetry of black rings and black strings solutions, thus demonstrating that the presence of hidden conformal symmetry is not linked to the separability of the KG-equation (or the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor). Further, we will argue that these classes of non-extremal black holes have a dual 2D CFT. New revised monodromy techniques are developed to encompass all the cases we consider.

Hidden Conformal Symmetries from Killing Towers with an Application to Large-D/CFT

We generalize the notion of hidden conformal symmetry in Kerr/CFT to Kerr-(A)dS black holes in arbitrary dimensions. We build the SL(2, R) generators directly from the Killing tower, whose Killing tensors and Killing vectors enforce the separability of the equations of motion. Our construction amounts to an explicit relationship between hidden conformal symmetries and Killing tensors: we use the Killing tower to build a novel tensor equation connecting the SL(2,R) Casimir with the radial Klein-Gordon operator. For asymptotically flat black holes in four and five dimensions we recover previously known results that were obtained using the "near-region" limit and the monodromy method. We then perform a monodromy evaluation of the Klein-Gordon scalar wave equation for all Kerr-(A)dS black holes, finding explicit forms for the zero mode symmetry generators. We also extend this analysis to the large-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole as a step towards buliding a Large-D/CFT correspondence.

Spectral weight in Chern-Simons theory with symmetry breaking

We calculate the low-energy spectral weight of a holographic superfluid coupled to a Chern-Simons term in IR radial scaling geometries characterized by a parameter $\eta$. This work was motivated by previous results where an unexpected low-energy spectral weight and a region of instability were seen, both at finite momentum, for the holographic superfluid. We characterize the effect of varying the Chern-Simons coupling $\alpha$ and condensate charge parameter $\zeta$ on these regions supporting low-energy spectral weight or a finite momentum instability. We show that $\eta$, $\alpha$ and $\zeta$ each plays a unique role in shaping these regions. We find a surface $\alpha_{\text{crit}}(\eta, \zeta)$ above which the theory is unstable. In the longitudinal channel we extend our analysis to general dimension $d$. We briefly analyze the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and find that Fermi shells exist for $d>4$.

Freeze-in and Freeze-out of Dark Matter with Charged Long-lived Partners

We present a novel framework capable of addressing the dark matter problem through freeze-in and freeze-out mechanisms, separately or together, depending on the region of the parameter space considered. In the dark matter dynamics, the model features an interplay of thermal production along with sizeable contribution through feeble decay of associated dark fermionic partner, which finally freezes out to the right relic density for a wide range of masses and couplings. Apart from the fermionic dark matter candidate, the model introduces two charged partners, one fermionic and another scalar, which often have delayed decays leading to distinct characteristics of such long-lived particles (LLP) in the colliders like the LHC. Our analysis shows that within the present scenario, LLP of decay length that could be probed at the LHC experiments are compatible with dark matter masses ranging from a few GeV to close to a TeV, as opposed to the requirement of keV-MeV dark matter in simple FIMP scenarios with LLP. In addition, the model presents hitherto unexplored interesting possibilities in the LLP searches, like (i) LLP to LLP to SM cascade decays, which could be searched for within the LHC detectors and (ii) heavy neutral particle decaying within MATHUSLA with two jets and large missing energy. A supplementary aspect of the model is the presence of a heavy neutrino facilitating Type-I seesaw mechanism without disturbing the dark matter side.

Top Higgs Yukawa Coupling Analysis from e+e- -> ttH -> bW bW bb

Electroweak symmetry breaking and the origin of mass of fermion and boson are fundamental questions to understand particle physics. The essential piece of this symmetry breaking, the Higgs boson, is the most probable particle to be discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). If one, or more, Higgs particles are discovered, precise measurements of all the properties of this Higgs will be very important including the measurement of Yukawa couplings of the fermions to the Higgs. We present a study of e+e- -> ttH at a linear collider, with the aim of making a direct measurement of the the top-Higgs coupling, g(ttH) using the semi-leptonic final state and M_H of 120 GeV. We show that the top-Higgs coupling at the center of mass energy 500 GeV, can be measured with an accuracy of better than 28%.

The LCFIVertex package: vertexing, flavour tagging and vertex charge reconstruction with an ILC vertex detector

The precision measurements envisaged at the International Linear Collider (ILC) depend on excellent instrumentation and reconstruction software. The correct identification of heavy flavour jets, placing unprecedented requirements on the quality of the vertex detector, will be central for the ILC programme. This paper describes the LCFIVertex software, which provides tools for vertex finding and for identification of the flavour and charge of the leading hadron in heavy flavour jets. These tools are essential for the ongoing optimisation of the vertex detector design for linear colliders such as the ILC. The paper describes the algorithms implemented in the LCFIVertex package, as well as the scope of the code and its performance for a typical vertex detector design.

Observing the Evolution of the Universe

How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass. We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. Additional instruments are in the planning stages.
