The polytope of all matroids in ranks 2 and 3

We give explicit recursive constructions for the polytope of all matroids $\Omega_{r,n}$ in ranks 2 and 3 for all ground set sizes. This polytope was introduced in recent work by Ferroni and Fink as a tool for checking positivity conjectures for valuative invariants. We supplement our theoretical construction by an implementation, which allows for the computation of $\Omega_{2,n}$ for $n\leq 33$ and $\Omega_{3,n}$ for $n\leq 10$. Further, we compute Schubert expansions for all isomorphism classes of matroids of rank $2$ up to $n = 80$, and for rank $3$ up to $n = 11$.

Zero-dimensional tropicalizations in OSCAR

We present algorithms for computing zero-dimensional tropical varieties as implemented in OscarZerodimensionalTropicalization.jl. The algorithms include a mathematical workaround for a common practical issue arising when working with polynomials over inexact fields in existing software systems.

Regular subdivisions, bounds on initial ideals, and categorical limits

Several known constructions relate initial degenerations of projective toric varieties and Grassmannians to regular subdivisions of appropriate point configurations. We define a general framework which allows for partial generalizations of these constructions to arbitrary projective schemes (as well as their very affine parts). We associate a point configuration $A$ with any homogeneous ideal $I$. We obtain upper and lower bounds on every initial ideal of $I$, defining them in terms of the regular subdivision of $A$ given by the same weight. Furthermore, both bounds are interpreted categorically via (co)limits over the face poset of the subdivision. We also investigate when these bounds are exact, showing that the respective weights form a subfan in the secondary fan of $A$.

Log-concavity for independent sets of valuated matroids

Recently, several proofs of the Mason--Welsh conjecture for matroids have been found, which asserts the log-concavity of the sequence that counts independent sets of a given size. In this article we use the theory of Lorentzian polynomials, developed by Br\"and\'en and Huh, to prove a generalization of the Mason-Welsh conjecture to the context of valuated matroids. In fact, we provide a log-concavity result in the more general setting of valuated discrete polymatroids, or equivalently, M-convex functions. Our approach is via the construction of a generic extension of a valuated matroid or M-convex function, so that the bases of the extension are related to the independent sets of the original matroid. We also provide a similar log-concavity result for valuated bimatroids, which, we believe, might be of independent interest.

Tropical Quiver Grassmannians

We introduce quivers of valuated matroids and study their tropical parameter spaces. We define quiver Dressians, which parametrize containment of tropical linear spaces after tropical matrix multiplication, and show that tropicalizations of quiver Grassmannians parametrize the realizable analogue. We further introduce affine morphisms of valuated matroids and show compatibility with weakly monomial quiver representations. Finally, we show that starting in ambient dimension 2, quiver Dressians can have nonrealizable points.

Faithful tropicalization of hyperelliptic curves

We provide explicit faithful re-embeddings for all hyperelliptic curves of genus at most three and an algorithmic way to construct them. Both in the faithful tropicalization algorithm and the proofs of correctness, we showcase OSCAR-methods for commutative algebra, polyhedral and tropical geometry.

Tropical Möbius strips and ruled surfaces

We consider the enumeration of tropical curves in Möbius strips for two different lattice structures and relate them to the enumeration of curves in two rational ruled surfaces over a complex elliptic curve. Using this correspondence, we prove regularity results such as the piecewise quasi-polynomiality of relative invariants and the quasi-modularity of their generating series.

Linear Degenerate Tropical Flag Varieties

We study linear degenerations of flag varieties from the point of view of tropical geometry. We define the linear degenerate flag Dressian and prove a correspondence between: $(a)$ points in the linear degenerate flag Dressian, $(b)$ linear degenerate flags of valuated matroids, $(c)$ linear degenerate flags of tropical linear spaces, and $(d)$ morphisms of valuated matroids arising from projection maps.

Recovery of Plane Curves from Branch Points

We recover plane curves from their branch points under projection onto a line. Our focus lies on cubics and quartics. These have 6 and 12 branch points respectively. The plane Hurwitz numbers 40 and 120 count the orbits of solutions. We determine the numbers of real solutions, and we present exact algorithms for recovery. Our approach relies on 150 years of beautiful algebraic geometry, from Clebsch to Vakil and beyond.
