Bounding the number of limit cycles in piecewise linear differential systems: methodology and worked examples

In 2012, Huan and Yang introduced the first piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line having at least three limit cycles, serving as a counterexample to the Han-Zhang conjecture that said that such systems have no more than two limit cycles. Over the past decade, extensive research has been conducted to explore periodic solutions in piecewise linear differential systems. However, the question of whether the Huan-Yang example indeed has exactly three limit cycles has remained unresolved, primarily due to the lack of techniques for bounding the number of limit cycles in these systems. Based on the authors' recent results, this paper presents a methodology for bounding the number of limit cycles in piecewise linear systems. This methodology conclusively establishes that the Huan-Yang example has exactly three limit cycles. Our methodology has a broader applicability and constitutes a powerful tool for analyzing and bounding the number of limit cycles in any explicit example of piecewise linear differential systems. We extend our analysis to several recent examples of significance in the literature and show that they also exhibit exactly three limit cycles. Finally, we present an algebraic criterion for bounding the number of crossing limit cycles in the focus-focus case.

Uniqueness and stability of limit cycles in planar piecewise linear differential systems without sliding region

In this paper, we consider the family of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line without sliding regions, that is, differential systems whose flow transversally crosses the switching line except for at most one point. In the research literature, many papers deal with the problem of determining the maximum number of limit cycles that these differential systems can have. This problem has been usually approached via large case-by-case analyses which distinguish the many different possibilities for the spectra of the matrices of the differential systems. Here, by using a novel integral characterization of Poincaré half-maps, we prove, without unnecessary distinctions of matrix spectra, that the optimal uniform upper bound for the number of limit cycles of these differential systems is one. In addition, it is proven that this limit cycle, if it exists, is hyperbolic and its stability is determined by a simple condition in terms of the parameters of the system. As a byproduct of our analysis, a condition for the existence of the limit cycle is also derived.

Properties of Poincaré half-maps for planar linear systems and some direct applications to periodic orbits of piecewise systems

This paper deals with fundamental properties of Poincaré half-maps defined on a straight line for planar linear systems. Concretely, we focus on the analyticity of the Poincaré half-maps, their series expansions (Taylor and Newton-Puiseux) at the tangency point and at infinity, the relative position between the graph of Poincaré half-maps and the bisector of the fourth quadrant, and the sign of their second derivatives. All these properties are essential to understand the dynamic behavior of planar piecewise linear systems. Accordingly, we also provide some of their most immediate, but non-trivial, consequences regarding periodic orbits.

Uniform upper bound for the number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line

The existence of a uniform upper bound for the maximum number of limit cycles of planar piecewise linear differential systems with two zones separated by a straight line has been subject of interest of hundreds of papers. After more than 30 years of investigation since Lum-Chua's work, it has remained an open question whether this uniform upper bound exists or not. Here, we give a positive answer for this question by establishing the existence of a natural number $L^*\leq 8$ for which any planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has no more than $L^*$ limit cycles. The proof is obtained by combining a newly developed integral characterization of Poincaré half-maps for linear differential systems with an extension of Khovanski\uı's theory for investigating the number of intersection points between smooth curves and a particular kind of orbits of vector fields.

Integral characterization for Poincaré half-maps in planar linear systems

The intrinsic nature of a problem usually suggests a first suitable method to deal with it. Unfortunately, the apparent ease of application of these initial approaches may make their possible flaws seem to be inherent to the problem and often no alternative ways to solve it are searched for. For instance, since linear systems of differential equations are easy to integrate, Poincaré half-maps for piecewise linear systems are always studied by using the direct integration of the system in each zone of linearity. However, this approach is accompanied by two important defects: due to the different spectra of the involved matrices, many cases and strategies must be considered and, since the flight time appears as a new variable, nonlinear complicated equations arise. This manuscript is devoted to present a novel theory to characterize Poincaré half-maps in planar linear systems that avoids the computation of their solutions and the problems it causes. This new perspective rests on the use of line integrals of a specific conservative vector field which is orthogonal to the flow of the linear system. Besides the obvious mathematical interest, this approach is attractive because it allows to simplify the study of piecewise-linear systems and deal with open problems in this field.

A new simple proof for Lum-Chua's conjecture

The already proved Lum-Chua's conjecture says that a continuous planar piecewise linear differential system with two zones separated by a straight line has at most one limit cycle. In this paper, we provide a new proof by using a novel characterization for Poincaré half-maps in planar linear systems. This proof is very short and straightforward, because this characterization avoids the inherent flaws of the usual methods to study piecewise linear systems (the appearance of large case-by-case analysis due to the unnecessary discrimination between the different spectra of the involved matrices, to deal with transcendental equations forced by the implicit occurrence of flight time, ...). In addition, the application of the characterization allow us to prove that if a limit cycle exists, then it is hyperbolic and its stability is determined by a simple relationship between the parameters. To the best of our knowledge, the hyperbolicity of the limit cycle and this simple expression for its stability have not been pointed out before.

Saddle-node canard cycles in planar piecewise linear differential systems

By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In addition, some novel slow-fast behaviors are obtained. In particular, in the supercritical case, and under suitable conditions, it is proved that the limit cycles are organized along a curve exhibiting two folds. Each of these folds corresponds to a saddle-node bifurcation of canard limit cycles, one involving headless canard cycles, whereas the other involving canard cycles with head. This configuration allows the coexistence of three canard limit cycles.
