Affine Hecke algebras and symmetric quasi-polynomial duality

In a recent paper with Sahi and Stokman, we introduced quasi-polynomial generalizations of Macdonald polynomials for arbitrary root systems via a new class of representations of the double affine Hecke algebra. These objects depend on a deformation parameter $q$, Hecke parameters, and an additional torus parameter. In this paper, we study $\textit{antisymmetric}$ and $\textit{symmetric}$ quasi-polynomial analogs of Macdonald polynomials in the $q \rightarrow \infty$ limit. We provide explicit decomposition formulas for these objects in terms of classical Demazure-Lusztig operators and partial symmetrizers, and relate them to Macdonald polynomials with prescribed symmetry in the same limit. We also provide a complete characterization of (anti-)symmetric quasi-polynomials in terms of partially (anti-)symmetric polynomials. As an application, we obtain formulas for metaplectic spherical Whittaker functions associated to arbitrary root systems. For $GL_{r}$, this recovers some recent results of Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, and proves a precise statement of their conjecture about a "parahoric-metaplectic" duality.

Quasi-polynomial representations of double affine Hecke algebras

We introduce an explicit family of representations of the double affine Hecke algebra $\mathbb{H}$ acting on spaces of quasi-polynomials, defined in terms of truncated Demazure-Lusztig type operators. We show that these quasi-polynomial representations provide concrete realizations of a natural family of cyclic $Y$-parabolically induced $\mathbb{H}$-representations. We recover Cherednik's well-known polynomial representation as a special case. The quasi-polynomial representation gives rise to a family of commuting operators acting on spaces of quasi-polynomials. These generalize the Cherednik operators, which are fundamental in the study of Macdonald polynomials. We provide a detailed study of their joint eigenfunctions, which may be regarded as quasi-polynomial, multi-parametric generalizations of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. We also introduce generalizations of symmetric Macdonald polynomials, which are invariant under a multi-parametric generalization of the standard Weyl group action. We connect our results to the representation theory of metaplectic covers of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields. We introduce root system generalizations of the metaplectic polynomials from our previous work by taking a suitable restriction and reparametrization of the quasi-polynomial generalizations of Macdonald polynomials. We show that metaplectic Iwahori-Whittaker functions can be recovered by taking the Whittaker limit of these metaplectic polynomials.

Metaplectic representations of Hecke algebras, Weyl group actions, and associated polynomials

Chinta and Gunnells introduced a rather intricate multi-parameter Weyl group action on rational functions on a torus, which, when the parameters are specialized to certain Gauss sums, describes the functional equations of Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series associated to metaplectic (n-fold) covers of algebraic groups. In subsequent joint work with Puskas, they extended this action to a "metaplectic" representation of the equal parameter affine Hecke algebra, which allowed them to obtain explicit formulas for the p-parts of these Dirichlet series. They have also verified by a computer check the remarkable fact that their formulas continue to define a group action for general (unspecialized) parameters. In the first part of paper we give a conceptual explanation of this fact, by giving a uniform and elementary construction of the "metaplectic" representation for generic Hecke algebras as a suitable quotient of a parabolically induced affine Hecke algebra module, from which the associated Chinta-Gunnells Weyl group action follows through localization. In the second part of the paper we extend the metaplectic representation to the double affine Hecke algebra, which provides a generalization of Cherednik's basic representation. This allows us to introduce a new family of "metaplectic" polynomials, which generalize nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. In this paper, we provide the details of the construction of metaplectic polynomials in type A; the general case will be handled in the sequel to this paper.

Signatures of representations of Hecke algebras and rational Cherednik algebras

Determining whether an irreducible representation of a group (or $*$-algebra) admits a non-degenerate invariant, positive-definite Hermitian form is an important problem in representation theory. In this paper, we study a related notion: that of signatures. We study representations $S^λ(q)$ of $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$, the Hecke algebra of type $A$ ($|q| = 1$), and representations $M_{c}(λ)$ of $\mathbb{H}_{c}$, the rational Cherednik algebra of type $A$ ($c \in \mathbb{R}$), which have unique (up to scaling) invariant Hermitian forms (here $λ$ is a partition of $n$). The signature is the number of elements with positive norm minus the number of elements with negative norm, and we analogously define the signature character in the case that there is a natural grading on the module. We provide formulas for (1) signatures of modules over $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$ and (2) signature characters of modules over $\mathbb{H}_{c}$. We study the limit $c \rightarrow -\infty$, in which case the signature character has a simpler form in terms of inversions and descents of permutations in $S(n)$. We provide examples corresponding to some special shapes, and small values of $n$. Finally, when $q = e^{2 πi c}$, we show that the asymptotic signature character of the $\mathbb{H}_{c}$-module $M_{c}(τ)$ is the signature of the $\mathcal{H}_{n}(q)$-module $S^τ(q)$.

Signature characters of highest-weight representations of $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$

We consider $U_{q}(\mathfrak{gl}_{n})$, the quantum group of type $A$ for $|q| = 1$, $q$ generic. We provide formulas for signature characters of irreducible finite-dimensional highest weight modules and Verma modules. In both cases, the technique involves combinatorics of the Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. As an application, we obtain information about unitarity of finite-dimensional irreducible representations for arbitrary $q$: we classify the continuous spectrum of the unitarity locus. We also recover some known results in the classical limit $q \rightarrow 1$ that were obtained by different means. Finally, we provide several explicit examples of signature characters.

On the expansion of certain vector-valued characters of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_n)$ with respect to the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis

Macdonald polynomials are an important class of symmetric functions, with connections to many different fields. Etingof and Kirillov showed an intimate connection between these functions and representation theory: they proved that Macdonald polynomials arise as (suitably normalized) vector-valued characters of irreducible representations of quantum groups. In this paper, we provide a branching rule for these characters. The coefficients are expressed in terms of skew Macdonald polynomials with plethystic substitutions. We use our branching rule to give an expansion of the characters with respect to the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis. Finally, we study in detail the $q=0$ case, where the coefficients factor nicely, and have an interpretation in terms of certain $p$-adic counts.

A p-adic interpretation of some integral identities for Hall-Littlewood polynomials

If one restricts an irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $Gl_{2n}$ to the orthogonal group (respectively the symplectic group), the trivial representation appears with multiplicity one if and only if all parts of $λ$ are even (resp. the conjugate partition $λ'$ is even). One can rephrase this statement as an integral identity involving Schur functions, the corresponding characters. Rains and Vazirani considered $q,t$-generalizations of such integral identities, and proved them using affine Hecke algebra techniques. In a recent paper, we investigated the $q=0$ limit (Hall-Littlewood), and provided direct combinatorial arguments for these identities; this approach led to various generalizations and a finite-dimensional analog of a recent summation identity of Warnaar. In this paper, we reformulate some of these results using $p$-adic representation theory; this parallels the representation-theoretic interpretation in the Schur case. The nonzero values of the identities are interpreted as certain $p$-adic measure counts. This approach provides a $p$-adic interpretation of these identities (and a new identity), as well as independent proofs. As an application, we obtain a new Littlewood summation identity that generalizes a classical result due to Littlewood and Macdonald. Finally, our $p$-adic method also leads to a generalized integral identity in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and Hall polynomials.

Symmetric and nonsymmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials of type BC

Koornwinder polynomials are a 6-parameter BC_n-symmetric family of Laurent polynomials indexed by partitions, from which Macdonald polynomials can be recovered in suitable limits of the parameters. As in the Macdonald polynomial case, standard constructions via difference operators do not allow one to directly control these polynomials at q=0. In the first part of this paper, we provide an explicit construction for these polynomials in this limit, using the defining properties of Koornwinder polynomials. Our formula is a first step in developing the analogy between Hall-Littlewood polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials at q=0. Next, we provide an analogous construction for the nonsymmetric Koornwinder polynomials in the same limiting case. The method employed in this paper is a BC-type adaptation of techniques used in an earlier work of the author, which gave a combinatorial method for proving vanishing results of Rains and Vazirani at the Hall-Littlewood level. As a consequence of this work, we obtain direct arguments for the constant term evaluations and norms in both the symmetric and nonsymmetric cases.

Supercharacters, symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and related Hopf algebras

We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

Vanishing integrals for Hall-Littlewood polynomials

It is well known that if one integrates a Schur function indexed by a partition $λ$ over the symplectic (resp. orthogonal) group, the integral vanishes unless all parts of $λ$ have even multiplicity (resp. all parts of $λ$ are even). In a recent paper of Rains and Vazirani, Macdonald polynomial generalizations of these identities and several others were developed and proved using Hecke algebra techniques. However at $q=0$ (the Hall-Littlewood level), these approaches do not work, although one can obtain the results by taking the appropriate limit. In this paper, we develop a direct approach for dealing with this special case. This technique allows us to prove some identities that were not amenable to the Hecke algebra approach, as well as to explicitly control the nonzero values. Moreover, we are able to generalize some of the identities by introducing extra parameters. This leads us to a finite-dimensional analog of a recent result of Warnaar, which uses the Rogers-Szegö polynomials to unify some existing summation type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions.

Restricting supercharacters of the finite group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices

It is well-known that the representation theory of the finite group of unipotent upper-triangular matrices $U_n$ over a finite field is a wild problem. By instead considering approximately irreducible representations (supercharacters), one obtains a rich combinatorial theory analogous to that of the symmetric group, where we replace partition combinatorics with set-partitions. This paper studies the supercharacter theory of a family of subgroups that interpolate between $U_{n-1}$ and $U_n$. We supply several combinatorial indexing sets for the supercharacters, supercharacter formulas for these indexing sets, and a combinatorial rule for restricting supercharacters from one group to another. A consequence of this analysis is a Pieri-like restriction rule from $U_n$ to $U_{n-1}$ that can be described on set-partitions (analogous to the corresponding symmetric group rule on partitions).
