RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of F_p, Z and \ell

We give an algorithm for calculating the RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of F_p, completing the calculation started by the second author. We also calculate the RO(S^1)-graded TR-groups of Z with mod p coefficients and of the Adams summand \ell of connective complex K-theory with V(1)-coefficients. Some of these calculations are used elsewhere to compute the algebraic K-theory of certain Z-algebras.

Uniqueness of Morava K-theory

We show that there is an essentially unique S-algebra structure on the Morava K-theory spectrum K(n), while K(n) has uncountably many MU or \hE{n}-algebra structures. Here \hE{n} is the K(n)-localized Johnson-Wilson spectrum. To prove this we set up a spectral sequence computing the homotopy groups of the moduli space of A-infinity structures on a spectrum, and use the theory of S-algebra k-invariants for connective S-algebras due to Dugger and Shipley to show that all the uniqueness obstructions are hit by differentials.

Topological Hochschild homology of l and ko

We calculate the integral homotopy groups of THH(l) at any prime and of THH(ko) at p=2, where l is the Adams summand of the connective complex p-local K-theory spectrum and ko is the connective real K-theory spectrum.

On the K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras over the integers

We show that the K_{2i}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is finite of order (mi)!(i!)^{m-2} and that K_{2i+1}(Z[x]/(x^m),(x)) is free abelian of rank m-1. This is accomplished by showing that the equivariant homotopy groups of the topological Hochschild spectrum THH(Z) are finite, in odd degrees, and free abelian, in even degrees, and by evaluating their orders and ranks, respectively.

The cyclic bar construction on A_\infty H-spaces

We set up a general framework for enriching a subcategory of the category of noncommutative sets over a category C using products of the objects of a non-Σoperad P in \C. By viewing the simplicial category as a subcategory of the category of noncommutative sets in two different ways, we obtain two generalizations of simplicial objects. For the operad given by the Stasheff associahedra we obtain a model for the 2-sided bar construction in the first case and the cyclic bar and cobar construction in the second case. Using either the associahedra or the cyclohedra in place of the geometric simplices we can define the geometric realization of these objects.

Topological Hochschild homology and cohomology of A_\infty ring spectra

Let A be an A_\infty ring spectrum. We use the description from [2] of the cyclic bar and cobar construction to give a direct definition of topological Hochschild homology and cohomology of A using the Stasheff associahedra and another family of polyhedra called cyclohedra. This construction builds the maps making up the A_\infty structure into THH(A), and allows us to study how THH(A) varies over the moduli space of A_\infty structures on A. As an example, we study how topological Hochschild cohomology of Morava K-theory varies over the moduli space of A_\infty structures and show that in the generic case, when a certain matrix describing the noncommutativity of the multiplication is invertible, topological Hochschild cohomology of 2-periodic Morava K-theory is the corresponding Morava E-theory. If the A_\infty structure is ``more commutative'', topological Hochschild cohomology of Morava K-theory is some extension of Morava E-theory.

Hopf algebra structure on topological Hochschild homology

The topological Hochschild homology THH(R) of a commutative S-algebra (E_infty ring spectrum) R naturally has the structure of a commutative R-algebra in the strict sense, and of a Hopf algebra over R in the homotopy category. We show, under a flatness assumption, that this makes the Boekstedt spectral sequence converging to the mod p homology of THH(R) into a Hopf algebra spectral sequence. We then apply this additional structure to the study of some interesting examples, including the commutative S-algebras ku, ko, tmf, ju and j, and to calculate the homotopy groups of THH(ku) and THH(ko) after smashing with suitable finite complexes. This is part of a program to make systematic computations of the algebraic K-theory of S-algebras, by means of the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology.
