Joint reductions and mixed Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicities of modules and a joint-reduction-number-zero theorem

We offer new definitions of joint reductions and mixed Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity for certain collections of modules over a Noetherian local ring and illustrate their application to give two different proofs of a joint-reduction-number-zero theorem for integrally closed modules over two-dimensional regular local rings. We also relate the mixed Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity of modules to the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of a natural Koszul complex and relate it to the mixed Buchsbaum-Rim multiplicity of ideals by generalising a lemma from intersection theory.

Absolutely maximally entangled state equivalence and the construction of infinite quantum solutions to the problem of 36 officers of Euler

Ordering and classifying multipartite quantum states by their entanglement content remains an open problem. One class of highly entangled states, useful in quantum information protocols, the absolutely maximally entangled (AME) ones, are specially hard to compare as all their subsystems are maximally random. While, it is well-known that there is no AME state of four qubits, many analytical examples and numerically generated ensembles of four qutrit AME states are known. However, we prove the surprising result that there is truly only {\em one} AME state of four qutrits up to local unitary equivalence. In contrast, for larger local dimensions, the number of local unitary classes of AME states is shown to be infinite. Of special interest is the case of local dimension 6 where it was established recently that a four-party AME state does exist, providing a quantum solution to the classically impossible Euler problem of 36 officers. Based on this, an infinity of quantum solutions are constructed and we prove that these are not equivalent. The methods developed can be usefully generalized to multipartite states of any number of particles.

Planar algebras, quantum information theory and subfactors

We define generalised notions of biunitary elements in planar algebras and show that objects arising in quantum information theory such as Hadamard matrices, quantum latin squares and unitary error bases are all given by biunitary elements in the spin planar algebra. We show that there are natural subfactor planar algebras associated with biunitary elements.

Commuting squares and planar subalgebras

We show a close relationship between non-degenerate smooth commuting squares of $II_1$-factors with all inclusions of finite index and inclusions of subfactor planar algebras by showing that each leads to a construction of the other. One direction of this uses the Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko construction.

Planar algebras, cabling and the Drinfeld double

We produce an explicit embedding of the planar algebra of the Drinfeld double of a finite-dimensional, semisimple and cosemisimple Hopf algebra $H$ into the two-cabling of the planar algebra of the dual Hopf algebra $H^*$ and characterise the image.

On the genesis of a determinantal identity

We show how to derive a $3 \times 3$ determinantal identity in 12 indeterminates that gives an explicit version of a result of Mohan Kumar and Pavaman Murthy on completing unimodular rows.

From graphs to free products

We investigate a construction which associates a finite von Neumann algebra $M(Γ,μ)$ to a finite weighted graph $(Γ,μ)$. Pleasantly, but not surprisingly, the von Neumann algebra associated to to a `flower with $n$ petals' is the group von Neumann algebra of the free group on $n$ generators. In general, the algebra $M(Γ,μ)$ is a free product, with amalgamation over a finite-dimensional abelian subalgebra corresponding to the vertex set, of algebras associated to subgraphs `with one edge' (or actually a pair of dual edges). This also yields `natural' examples of (i) a Fock-type model of an operator with a free Poisson distribution; and (ii) $\C \oplus \C$-valued circular and semi-circular operators.

On the Guionnet-Jones-Shlyakhtenko construction for graphs

Using an analogue of the Guionnet-Jones-Shlaykhtenko construction for graphs we show that their construction applied to any subfactor planar algebra of finite depth yields an inclusion of interpolated free group factors with finite parameter, thereby giving another proof of their universality for finite depth planar algebras.
