Alexander modules of irreducible $C$-groups

A complete description of the Alexander modules of knotted $n$-manifolds in the sphere $S^{n+2}$, $n\geq 2$, and irreducible Hurwitz curves is given. This description is applied to investigate properties of the first homology groups of cyclic coverings of the sphere $S^{n+2}$ and the projective complex plane $\mathbb C\mathbb P^2$ branched respectively alone knotted $n$-manifolds and along irreducible Hurwitz (in particular, algebraic) curves.

On the Alexander polynomials of Hurwitz curves

Properties of the Alexander polynomials of Hurwitz curves are investigated. A complete description of the set of the Alexander polynomials of irreducible Hurwitz curves in the terms of their roots is given.

On Symplectic Coverings of the Projective Plane

We prove that a resolution of singularities of any finite covering of the projective plane branched along a Hurwitz curve $\bar H$ and, maybe, along a line "at infinity" can be embedded as a symplectic submanifold into some projective algebraic manifold equipped with an integer Kähler symplectic form (assuming that if $\bar H$ has negative nodes, then the covering is non-singular over them). For cyclic coverings we can realize this embeddings into a rational algebraic 3--fold. Properties of the Alexander polynomial of $\bar{H}$ are investigated and applied to the calculation of the first Betti number $b_1(\bar X_n)$ of a resolution $\bar X_n$ of singularities of $n$-sheeted cyclic coverings of $\mathbb C\mathbb P^2$ branched along $\bar H$ and, maybe, along a line "at infinity". We prove that $b_1(\bar X_n)$ is even if $\bar H$ is an irreducible Hurwitz curve but, in contrast to the algebraic case, that it can take any non-negative value in the case when $\bar H$ consists of several irreducible components.

Links and Hurwitz curves

In the note, we give a proof, based on the Generalized Thom Conjecture, of Bennequin's Theorem on upper bound for the Euler number of a link which is considered as a closed braid. A lower bound for the Euler number of a link is also given.

Old and new examples of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$

Surfaces of general type with geometric genus $p_g=0$, which can be given as Galois covering of the projective plane branched over an arrangement of lines with Galois group $G=(\mathbb Z/q\mathbb Z)^k$, where $k\geq 2$ and $q$ is a prime number, are investigated. The classical Godeaux surface, Campedelli surfaces, Burniat surfaces, and a new surface $X$ with $K_X^2=6$ and $(\mathbb Z/3\mathbb Z)^3\subset {Tors} (X)$ can be obtained as such coverings. It is proved that the group of automorphisms of a generic surface of the Campedelli type is isomorphic to $(\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^3$. The irreducible components of the moduli space containing the Burniat surfaces are described. It is shown that the Burniat surface $S$ with $K_S^2=2$ has the torsion group ${Tors} (S)\simeq (\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z)^3$, (therefore, it belongs to the family of the Campedelli surfaces), i.e., the corresponding statement in the papers of C. Peters "On certain examples of surfaces with $p_g=0$" in Nagoya Math. J. {\bf 66} (1977), and I. Dolgachev "Algebraic surfaces with $q=p_g=0$" in {\it Algebraic surfaces}, Liguori, Napoli (1977), and in the book of W. Barth, C. Peters, A. Van de Ven "Compact complex surfaces", p. 237, about the torsion group of the Burniat surface $S$ with $K_S^2=2$ is not correct.

Full twists factorization formula for double number of strings

A formula for factorizations of the full twist in the braid group $Br_{2m}$ depending on any four factorizations of the full twist in $Br_{m}$ is given. Applying this formula, a symplectic 4-manifold $X$ and two isotopic generic coverings $f_i :X\to \mathbb C\mathbb P^2$, branched, respectively, along cuspidal Hurwitz curves $\bar H_i\subset \mathbb C\mathbb P^2$ (without negative nodes) having different braid monodromy factorization types, are constructed. The class of the fundamental groups of the complements of the affine plane Hurwitz curves is described in terms of generators and defining relations.

On braid monodromy factorizations

We introduce and develop a language of semigroups over the braid groups for a study of braid monodromy factorizations (bmf's) of plane algebraic curves and other related objects. As an application we give a new proof of Orevkov's theorem on realization of a bmf over a disc by algebraic curves and show that the complexity of such a realization can not be bounded in terms of the types of the factors of the bmf. Besides, we prove that the type of a bmf is distinguishing Hurwitz curves with singularities of inseparable types up to $H$-isotopy and $J$-holomorphic cuspidal curves in $\C P^2$ up to symplectic isotopy.

On Real Structures of Rigid Surfaces

We construct several rigid (i.e., unique in their deformation class) surfaces which have particular behavior with respect to real structures: in one example the surface has no any real structure, in the other one it has a unique real structure and this structure is not maximal with respect to the Smith-Thom inequality. So, it answers in negative to the following problems: existence of real surfaces in each complex deformation class and existence of maximal surfaces in each complex deformation class containing real surfaces. Besides, we prove that there is no real surfaces among the surfaces of general type with $p_g=q=0$ and $K^2=9$. As a by-product, the surfaces constructed give one more counterexample to "Dif=Def" problem.

Diffeomorphisms, Isotopoies, and Braid Monodromy Factorizations of Plane Cuspidal Curves

We prove that there is an infinite sequence of pairs of plane cuspidal curves $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$, such that the pairs $(\Bbb CP^2, C_{m,1})$ and $(\Bbb CP^2, C_{m,2})$ are diffeomorphic, but $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$ have non-equivalent braid monodromy factorizations. These curves give rise to the negative solutions of "Dif=Def" and "Dif=Iso" problems for plane irreducible cuspidal curves. In our examples, $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$ are complex conjugated.

Generic coverings of plane with A-D-E-singularities

We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.

Braid Monodromy Factorization and Diffeomorphism Types

In this manuscript we prove that if two cuspidal plane curves have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then they are smoothly isotopic in the plane. As a consequence of this and the Chisini conjecture, we obtain that if two discriminant curves (or branch curves in other terminology) of generic projections (to the plane) of surfaces of general type imbedded in a projective space by means of a multiple canonical class have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then the surfaces are diffeomorphic (if we consider them as real 4-folds).

On Zariski's pairs of m-th canonical discriminant curves

In this note we give examples of Zariski's pairs $B_{1,m}, B_{2,m}$ ($m \in N$ and $m \geq 5$) of plane cuspidal curves such that (i) $B_{i,m}$ is the discriminant curve of a generic morphism $f_{i,m}:S_i \to P^2$, $i=1, 2$, (ii) $S_1$ and $S_2$ are homeomorphic surfaces of general type, (iii) $f_{i,m}$ is given by linear three-dimensional subsystem of the mth canonical class of $S_i$.

On a Chisini Conjecture

Chisini's conjecture asserts that for a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$ a generic morphism $f$ of a smooth projective surface onto $\mathbb P^2$ of degree $\geq 5$, branched along $B$, is unique up to isomorphism. We prove that if $°f$ is greater than the value of some function depending on the degree, genus, and number of cusps of $B$, then the Chisini conjecture holds for $B$. This inequality holds for many different generic morphisms. In particular, it holds for a generic morphism given by a linear subsystem of the $m$th canonical class for almost all surfaces with ample canonical class.
