Exact results for the entanglement across defects in critical chains

We consider fermionic and bosonic quantum chains where a defect separates two subsystems and compare the corresponding entanglement spectra. With these, we calculate their Rényi entanglement entropies and obtain analytical formulae for the continuously varying coefficient of the leading logarithmic term. For the bosonic case we also present numerical results.

Crossover between ballistic and diffusive transport: The Quantum Exclusion Process

We study the evolution of a system of free fermions in one dimension under the simultaneous effects of coherent tunneling and stochastic Markovian noise. We identify a class of noise terms where a hierarchy of decoupled equations for the correlation functions emerges. In the special case of incoherent, nearest-neighbour hopping the equation for the two-point functions is solved explicitly. The Green's function for the particle density is obtained analytically and a timescale is identified where a crossover from ballistic to diffusive behaviour takes place. The result can be interpreted as a competition between the two types of conduction channels where diffusion dominates on large timescales.

Fano resonances and entanglement entropy

We study the entanglement in the ground state of a chain of free spinless fermions with a single side-coupled impurity. We find a logarithmic scaling for the entanglement entropy of a segment neighboring the impurity. The prefactor of the logarithm varies continuously and contains an impurity contribution described by a one-parameter function, while the contribution of the unmodified boundary enters additively. The coefficient is found explicitly by pointing out similarities with other models involving interface defects. The proposed formula gives excellent agreement with our numerical data. If the segment has an open boundary, one finds a rapidly oscillating subleading term in the entropy that persists in the limit of large block sizes. The particle number fluctuation inside the subsystem is also reported. It is analogous with the expression for the entropy scaling, however with a simpler functional form for the coefficient.

Solution of the fermionic entanglement problem with interface defects

We study the ground-state entanglement of two halves of a critical transverse Ising chain, separated by an interface defect. From the relation to a two-dimensional Ising model with a defect line we obtain an exact expression for the continuously varying effective central charge. The result is relevant also for other fermionic chains.

Reduced density matrices and entanglement entropy in free lattice models

We review the properties of reduced density matrices for free fermionic or bosonic many-particle systems in their ground state. Their basic feature is that they have a thermal form and thus lead to a quasi-thermodynamic problem with a certain free-particle Hamiltonian. We discuss the derivation of this result, the character of the Hamiltonian and its eigenstates, the single-particle spectra and the full spectra, the resulting entanglement and in particular the entanglement entropy. This is done for various one- and two-dimensional situations, including also the evolution after global or local quenches.

Entanglement in a periodic quench

We consider a chain of free electrons with periodically switched dimerization and study the entanglement entropy of a segment with the remainder of the system. We show that it evolves in a stepwise manner towards a value proportional to the length of the segment and displays in general slow oscillations. For particular quench periods and full dimerization an explicit solution is given. Relations to equilibrium lattice models are pointed out.
