Pseudo-rotations and holomorphic curves

We prove a variant of the Chance-McDuff conjecture for pseudo-rotations: under certain additional conditions, a closed symplectic manifold which admits a Hamiltonian pseudo-rotation must have deformed quantum product and, in particular, some non-zero Gromov-Witten invariants. The only assumptions on the manifold are that it is weakly monotone and that its minimal Chern number is greater than one. The conditions on the pseudo-rotation are expressed in terms of the linearized flow at one of the fixed points and hypothetically satisfied for most (but not all) pseudo-rotations.

Approximate Identities and Lagrangian Poincaré Recurrence

In this note we discuss three interconnected problems about dynamics of Hamiltonian or, more generally, just smooth diffeomorphisms. The first two concern the existence and properties of the maps whose iterations approximate the identity map with respect to some norm, e.g., $C^1$- or $C^0$-norm for general diffeomorphisms and the $γ$-norm in the Hamiltonian case, and the third problem is the Lagrangian Poincaré recurrence conjecture.

Hamiltonian Pseudo-rotations of Projective Spaces

The main theme of the paper is the dynamics of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^n$ with the minimal possible number of periodic points (equal to $n+1$ by Arnold's conjecture), called here Hamiltonian pseudo-rotations. We prove several results on the dynamics of pseudo-rotations going beyond periodic orbits, using Floer theoretical methods. One of these results is the existence of invariant sets in arbitrarily small punctured neighborhoods of the fixed points, partially extending a theorem of Le Calvez and Yoccoz and Franks to higher dimensions. The other is a strong variant of the Lagrangian Poincaré recurrence conjecture for pseudo-rotations. We also prove the $C^0$-rigidity of pseudo-rotations with exponentially Liouville mean index vector. This is a higher-dimensional counterpart of a theorem of Bramham establishing such rigidity for pseudo-rotations of the disk.

On the Filtered Symplectic Homology of Prequantization Bundles

We study Reeb dynamics on prequantization circle bundles and the filtered (equivariant) symplectic homology of prequantization line bundles, aka negative line bundles, with symplectically aspherical base. We define (equivariant) symplectic capacities, obtain an upper bound on their growth, prove uniform instability of the filtered symplectic homology and touch upon the question of stable displacement. We also introduce a new algebraic structure on the positive (equivariant) symplectic homology capturing the free homotopy class of a closed Reeb orbit -- the linking number filtration -- and use it to give a new proof of the non-degenerate case of the contact Conley conjecture (i.e., the existence of infinitely many simple closed Reeb orbits), not relying on contact homology.

Multiplicity of Closed Reeb Orbits on Prequantization Bundles

We establish multiplicity results for geometrically distinct contractible closed Reeb orbits of non-degenerate contact forms on a broad class of prequantization bundles. The results hold under certain index requirements on the contact form and are sharp for unit cotangent bundles of CROSS's. In particular, we generalize and put in the symplectic-topological context a theorem of Duan, Liu, Long, and Wang for the standard contact sphere. We also prove similar results for non-hyperbolic contractible closed orbits and briefly touch upon the multiplicity problem for degenerate forms. On the combinatorial side of the question, we revisit and reprove the enhanced common jump theorem of Duan, Long and Wang, and interpret it as an index recurrence result.

Lusternik-Schnirelmann Theory and Closed Reeb Orbits

We develop a variant of Lusternik-Schnirelmann theory for the shift operator in equivariant Floer and symplectic homology. Our key result is that the spectral invariants are strictly decreasing under the action of the shift operator when periodic orbits are isolated. As an application, we prove new multiplicity results for simple closed Reeb orbits on the standard contact sphere, the unit cotangent bundle to the sphere and some other contact manifolds. We also show that the lower Conley--Zehnder index enjoys a certain recurrence property and revisit and reprove from a different perspective a variant of the common jump theorem of Long and Zhu. This is the second, combinatorial ingredient in the proof of the multiplicity results.

Conley Conjecture Revisited

We show that whenever a closed symplectic manifold admits a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many simple periodic orbits, the manifold has a spherical homology class of degree two with positive symplectic area and positive integral of the first Chern class. This theorem encompasses all known cases of the Conley conjecture (symplectic CY and negative monotone manifolds) and also some new ones (e.g., weakly exact symplectic manifolds with non-vanishing first Chern class). The proof hinges on a general Lusternik-Schnirelmann type result that, under some natural additional conditions, the sequence of mean spectral invariants for the iterations of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism never stabilizes. We also show that for the iterations of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with finitely many periodic orbits the sequence of action gaps between the "largest" and the "smallest" spectral invariants remains bounded and, as consequence, establish some new cases of the $C^\infty$-generic existence of infinitely many simple periodic orbits.

Random Chain Complexes

We study random, finite-dimensional, ungraded chain complexes over a finite field and show that for a uniformly distributed differential a complex has the smallest possible homology with the highest probability: either zero or one-dimensional homology depending on the parity of the dimension of the complex. We prove that as the order of the field goes to infinity the probability distribution concentrates in the smallest possible dimension of the homology. On the other hand, the limit probability distribution, as the dimension of the complex goes to infinity, is a super-exponentially decreasing, but strictly positive, function of the dimension of the homology.

Non-contractible Periodic Orbits in Hamiltonian Dynamics on Closed Symplectic Manifolds

We study Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds with non-contractible periodic orbits. In a variety of settings, we show that the presence of one non-contractible periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism of a closed toroidally monotone or toroidally negative monotone symplectic manifold implies the existence of infinitely many non-contractible periodic orbits in a specific collection of free homotopy classes. The main new ingredient in the proofs of these results is a filtration of Floer homology by the so-called augmented action. This action is independent of capping, and, under favorable conditions, the augmented action filtration for toroidally (negative) monotone manifolds can play the same role as the ordinary action filtration for atoroidal manifolds.

Higher Maslov Indices

We define Maslov--type indices associated to contact and symplectic transformation groups. There are two such families of indices. The first class of indices are maps from the homotopy groups of the contactomorphism or symplectomorphism group to a quotient of the integers. These are based on a generalization of the Maslov index. The second class of indices are maps from the homotopy groups of the space of contact structures or the space of cohomologous symplectic forms to the homotopy groups of a simple homogeneous space. We provide a detailed construction and describe some properties of these indices and their applications.

A Remark on Unique Ergodicity and the Contact Type Condition

We prove that for a broad class of exact symplectic manifolds including ${\mathbb R}^{2m}$ the Hamiltonian flow on a regular compact energy level of an autonomous Hamiltonian cannot be uniquely ergodic. This is a consequence of the Weinstein conjecture and an observation that a Hamiltonian structure with non-vanishing self-linking number must have contact type. We apply these results to show that certain types of exact twisted geodesic flows cannot be uniquely ergodic.

We list the properties of contact homology, beyond purely formal, needed for the proofs of some of the recent applications of contact homology in dynamics to work. The list is put together for the AIM Transversality in Contact Homology Workshop.

The Conley Conjecture and Beyond

This is (mainly) a survey of recent results on the problem of the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and Reeb flows. We focus on the Conley conjecture, proved for a broad class of closed symplectic manifolds, asserting that under some natural conditions on the manifold every Hamiltonian diffeomorphism has infinitely many (simple) periodic orbits. We discuss in detail the established cases of the conjecture and related results including an analog of the conjecture for Reeb flows, the cases where the conjecture is known to fail, the question of the generic existence of infinitely many periodic orbits, and local geometrical conditions that force the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits. We also show how a recently established variant of the Conley conjecture for Reeb flows can be applied to prove the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits of a low-energy charge in a non-vanishing magnetic field on a surface other than a sphere.

Fragility and Persistence of Leafwise Intersections

In this paper we study the question of fragility and robustness of leafwise intersections of coisotropic submanifolds. Namely, we construct a closed hypersurface and a sequence of Hamiltonians $C^0$-converging to zero such that the hypersurface and its images have no leafwise intersections, showing that some form of the contact type condition on the hypersurface is necessary in several persistence results. In connection with recent results in continuous symplectic topology, we also show that $C^0$-convergence of hypersurfaces, Hamiltonian diffeomorphic to each other, does not in general force $C^0$-convergence of the characteristic foliations.

On the Conley Conjecture for Reeb Flows

In this paper we prove the existence of infinitely many closed Reeb orbits for a certain class of contact manifolds. This result can be viewed as a contact analogue of the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture. The manifolds for which the contact Conley conjecture is established are the pre-quantization circle bundles with aspherical base. As an application, we prove that for a surface of genus at least two with a non-vanishing magnetic field, the twisted geodesic flow has infinitely many periodic orbits on every low energy level.

Iterated Index and the Mean Euler Characteristic

The aim of the paper is three-fold. We begin by proving a formula, both global and local versions, relating the number of periodic orbits of an iterated map and the Lefschetz numbers, or indices in the local case, of its iterations. This formula is then used to express the mean Euler characteristic (MEC) of a contact manifold in terms of local, purely topological, invariants of closed Reeb orbits, without any non-degeneracy assumption on the orbits. Finally, turning to applications of the local MEC formula to dynamics, we use it to reprove a theorem asserting the existence of at least two closed Reeb orbits on the standard contact three-sphere (by Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings in the most general form) and the existence of at least two closed geodesics for a Finsler metric on the two-sphere (Bangert and Long).

Closed Reeb orbits on the sphere and symplectically degenerate maxima

We show that the existence of one simple closed Reeb orbit of a particular type (a symplectically degenerate maximum) forces the Reeb flow to have infinitely many periodic orbits. We use this result to give a different proof of a recent theorem of Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings asserting that every Reeb flow on the standard contact three-sphere has at least two periodic orbits. Our methods are based on adapting the machinery originally developed for proving the Hamiltonian Conley conjecture to the contact setting.

Hyperbolic Fixed Points and Periodic Orbits of Hamiltonian Diffeomorphisms

We prove that for a certain class of closed monotone symplectic manifolds any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with a hyperbolic fixed point must necessarily have infinitely many periodic orbits. Among the manifolds in this class are complex projective spaces, some Grassmannians, and also certain product manifolds such as the product of a projective space with a symplectically aspherical manifold of low dimension. A key to the proof of this theorem is the fact that the energy required for a Floer connecting trajectory to approach an iterated hyperbolic orbit and cross its fixed neighborhood is bounded away from zero by a constant independent of the order of iteration. This result, combined with certain properties of the quantum product specific to the above class of manifolds, implies the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits.
