From Architecture to Binary: Ensuring Cross-Domain Consistency in Model-Based Airborne Software Development

This paper presents an airborne software development approach for manned and unmanned aerial vehicles aimed at reducing inconsistencies across system, model-based functional, and embedded software domains. In environments influenced by standards such as ARP-4754B and DO-178C, these inconsistencies typically stem from insufficient enforcement across domain boundaries rather than missing process definitions. Building on a previously proposed toolchain centered on a relational interface database, we identify recurring failure modes and propose a repository-centered implementation to address them, tailored to small, resource-constrained teams operating without heavyweight process overhead. Each domain is assigned a primary repository with cross-repository references and dedicated CI pipelines that generate, update, and validate the exchanged artifacts. Automated interface updates, differential change notifications, and consistency checks propagate changes with minimal manual effort and surface inconsistencies before the time-consuming code-generation and compilation steps. An initial implementation in an ongoing experimental project is described, with qualitative feedback from its early use.

Unified Message Model for Heterogeneous Serial Data Exchange Protocols

Modern embedded systems are becoming increasingly complex and typically integrate numerous heterogeneous devices, such as controllers, sensors, actuators, and supporting subsystems. As a result, their development and integration involve a wide variety of serial communication protocols, ranging from standardized solutions to partially standardized and fully project-defined formats. Efficient development of such systems increasingly depends on automation toolchains, which in turn require a clear, unified, and machine-processable formal basis. This paper proposes a unified, protocol-agnostic message model for explicit and deterministic description of serial messages. The model is based on formal definition of data types, atomic message elements (containers), and complete message structure. In addition to the model itself, the paper introduces methods for practical work with it, including configurable message types for expressing structural constraints and supporting deterministic automation, as well as configurable user representations for engineering-oriented reading and editing. The proposed model and methods are demonstrated through implementation in an industrial tool environment. The results show that the approach can support machine-readable interface control document development, automated generation of transport-layer software, and practical engineering work with both standardized and weakly formalized serial protocols. Taken together, the proposed model, methods, and tool implementation provide a practical foundation for automation toolchains in heterogeneous serial communication development.

Streamlined Airborne Software Development for Large UAVs: From Unified Data Collection to Automated Code Generation

The aerospace industry has experienced significant transformations over the last decade, driven by technological advancements and innovative solutions in goods and personal transportation. This evolution has spurred the emergence of numerous start-ups that now face challenges traditionally encountered by established aerospace companies. Among these challenges is the efficient processing of digital intra-device communication interfaces for onboard equipment - a critical component for ensuring seamless system integration and functionality. Addressing this challenge requires solutions that emphasize clear and consistent interface descriptions, automation of processes, and reduced labor-intensive efforts. This paper presents a novel process and toolchain designed to streamline the development of digital interfaces and onboard software, which our team has successfully applied in several completed projects. The proposed approach focuses on automation and flexibility while maintaining compliance with design assurance requirements.
