Graphical Scattering Equations

The CHY scattering equations on the moduli space $M_{0,n}$ play a prominent role at the interface of particle physics and algebraic statistics. We study the scattering correspondence when the Mandelstam invariants are restricted to a fixed graph on $n$ vertices.

Degenerating Discriminants

We study the behavior of projective dual varieties and discriminants under flat degenerations. For Gröbner degenerations, we show that the conormal variety admits a Gröbner degeneration with opposite weights on the dual coordinates. Using Whitney stratifications and Sabbah's formula, we describe the irreducible components and multiplicities of the special fiber of this degeneration, and hence of the limiting dual hypersurface. We then extend these results to higher associated hypersurfaces in Grassmannians. As applications, we recover classical formulas for hypersurfaces with isolated singularities, analyze degenerations of generic complete intersections and reciprocal linear spaces, and relate the theory to mixed discriminants of parametrized polynomial systems.

Numerical Algebraic Geometry for Energy Computations on Tensor Train Varieties

We study energy minimization problems in quantum chemistry through the lens of computational algebraic geometry. We focus on minimizing the Rayleigh quotient of a Hamiltonian over a tensor train variety. The complex critical points of this problem approximate eigenstates of the quantum system, with the global minimum approximating the ground state. We call the number of critical points the Rayleigh-Ritz degree. We first study the Rayleigh-Ritz degree and introduce the Rayleigh-Ritz discriminant, which describes Hamiltonians that lead to a deficient number of critical points. We then specialize this framework to tensor train varieties: we identify instances when they are Segre products of projective spaces, report what we know about their defining ideals, and present a birational parametrization from products of Grassmannians. We use homotopy continuation to compute all critical points of this optimization problem over various tensor train and determinantal varieties. Finally, we use these results to benchmark state-of-the-art methods, the Alternating Linear Scheme and Density Matrix Renormalization Group.

Constraining Conformal Correlators

We study the space of conformally covariant $n$-point functions of spinning operators using methods from invariant theory, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. We show that the rational part of any such function can be expressed in terms of the basic building blocks introduced by Costa, Penedones, Poland, Rychkov, thereby providing a rigorous proof of a result that is widely used in the physics literature. We reformulate the problem of enumeration of $n$-point structures in terms of counting lattice points in fractional matching polytopes, and compute these counts using vector partition functions, Hilbert functions, and Kostka numbers. We show that all algebraic relations between the building blocks follow from Gram constraints and compute the number of algebraically independent building blocks. For three-point functions, we derive closed counting formulas for arbitrary integer spins, both with and without Bose symmetry, and discuss a necessary and sufficient condition for the partial conservation operator to lift to a differential operator written in terms of the building blocks. We provide code that generates a basis of three-point structures satisfying these constraints for given values of spins and scaling dimensions.

Elimination ideals of Plücker ideals and algebras with straightening laws

It is well known that the Plücker ideal defining the Grassmannian is generated by quadratic Plücker relations. These relations form a reverse lexicographic Gröbner basis and endow the Plücker algebra with the structure of an algebra with straightening laws (ASL). In this paper, we study quadratically generated projections of the Grassmannian of lines $\mathrm{Gr}(2,n)$. We then combinatorially characterize the Gorenstein ASL subalgebras of the Plücker algebra of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,n)$.

Additive actions on projective hypersurfaces with a finite number of orbits

An induced additive action on a projective variety $X \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ is a regular action of the group $\mathbb{G}_a^m$ on $X$ with an open orbit, which can be extended to a regular action on the ambient projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. In this work, we classify all projective hypersurfaces admitting an induced additive action with a finite number of orbits.

On the construction of a counterexample to Strassen's rank additivity conjecture

The rank additivity conjecture, first formulated by Volker Strassen in 1973, states that the rank of the direct sum of two independent tensors is equal to the sum of their individual ranks. In the last decades, this conjecture has been a central topic in tensor rank theory and its implications for computational complexity. In 2019, Yaroslav Shitov disproved this conjecture in its general form by showing the existence of a counter-example using a dimension counting argument. In this paper, we provide an overview of the Strassen problem and Shitov's work and revisit his counterexample with a detailed explanation, offering an alternative proof.

The SagbiHomotopy.jl package for solving polynomial systems

We present the Julia package SagbiHomotopy.jl for solving systems of polynomial equations using numerical homotopy continuation. The package introduces an optimal choice of a start system based on SAGBI homotopies. For square horizontally parameterized systems, where each equation is a linear combination of a given set of polynomials, SAGBI homotopies significantly reduce the number of solution paths to track compared to polyhedral homotopies currently used by default in most software for numerical homotopy continuation. We illustrate our framework with a variety of examples, including problems arising in chemistry and physics.

Proudfoot-Speyer degenerations of scattering equations

We study scattering equations of hyperplane arrangements from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra and numerical algebraic geometry. We formulate the problem as linear equations on a reciprocal linear space and develop a degeneration-based homotopy algorithm for solving them. We investigate the Hilbert regularity of the corresponding homogeneous ideal and apply our methods to CHY scattering equations.

A short proof for the parameter continuation theorem

The Parameter Continuation Theorem is the theoretical foundation for polynomial homotopy continuation, which is one of the main tools in computational algebraic geometry. In this note, we give a short proof using Gröbner bases. Our approach gives a method for computing discriminants.

SAGBI and Gröbner Bases Detection

We introduce a detection algorithm for SAGBI basis in polynomial rings, analogous to a Gröbner basis detection algorithm previously proposed by Gritzmann and Sturmfels. We also present two accompanying software packages named SagbiGbDetection for Macaulay2 and Julia. Both packages allow the user to find one or more term orders for which a set of input polynomials form either Gröbner basis for the ideal they generate or a SAGBI basis for the subalgebra. Additionally, we investigate the computational complexity of homogeneous SAGBI detection and apply our implementation to several novel examples.

Coupled Cluster Degree of the Grassmannian

We determine the number of complex solutions to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem on the Grassmannian in its Plücker embedding. This is motivated by quantum chemistry, where it represents the truncation to single electrons in coupled cluster theory. We prove the formula for the Grassmannian of lines which was conjectured in earlier work with Fabian Faulstich. This rests on the geometry of the graph of a birational parametrization of the Grassmannian. We present a squarefree Gröbner basis for this graph, and we develop connections to toric degenerations from representation theory.

Khovanskii bases for semimixed systems of polynomial equations -- a case of approximating stationary nonlinear Newtonian dynamics

We provide an approach to counting roots of polynomial systems, where each polynomial is a general linear combination of prescribed, fixed polynomials. Our tools rely on the theory of Khovanskii bases, combined with toric geometry, the Bernstein-Khovanskii-Kushnirenko (BKK) Theorem, and fiber products. As a direct application of this theory, we solve the problem of counting the number of approximate stationary states for coupled driven nonlinear resonators. We set up a system of polynomial equations that depends on three numbers $N, n$ and $M$ and whose solutions model the stationary states. The parameter $N$ is the number of coupled resonators, $2n - 1$ is the degree of nonlinearity of the underlying differential equation, and $M$ is the number of frequencies used in the approximation. We use our main theorems, that is, the generalized BKK Theorem and the Decoupling Theorem, to count the number of (complex) solutions of the polynomial system for an arbitrary degree of nonlinearity $2n - 1 \geq 3$, any number of resonators $N \geq 1$, and $M = 1$ harmonic. We also solve the case $N = 1, n = 2$ and $M = 2$ and give a computational way to check the number of solutions for $N = 1, n = 2$ and $M \geq 2$. This extends the results of arXiv:2208.08179.

On orbits of automorphism groups on horospherical varieties

In this paper we describe orbits of automorphism group on a horospherical variety in terms of degrees of homogeneous with respect to natural grading locally nilpotent derivations. In case of (may be non-normal) toric varieties a description of orbits of automorphism group in terms of corresponding weight monoid is obtained.

Commutative actions on smooth projective quadrics

By a commutative action on a smooth quadric $Q_n$ in $P^{n+1}$ we mean an effective action of a commutative connected algebraic group on $Q_n$ with an open orbit. We show that for $n \geq 3$ all commutative actions on $Q_n$ are additive actions described by Sharoiko in 2009. So there is a unique commutative action on $Q_n$ up to equivalence. For $n = 2$ there are three commutative actions on $Q_2$ up to equivalence, for $n = 1$ there are two commutative actions on $Q_1$ up to equivalence.
