Finite generating sets for reversible gate sets under general conservation laws

It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of $\{0,1\}^n$ can be implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: For any finite set $A$, a finite gate set can generate all even permutations of $A^n$ for all $n$, without any auxiliary symbols. This directly implies the previously published result that a finite gate set can generate all permutations of $A^n$ when the cardinality of $A$ is odd, and that one auxiliary symbol is necessary and sufficient to obtain all permutations when the cardinality of $A$ is even. We also consider the conservative case, that is, those permutations of $A^n$ that preserve the weight of the input word. The weight is the vector that records how many times each symbol occurs in the word or, more generally, the image of the word under a fixed monoid homomorphism from $A^*$ to a commutative monoid. It turns out that no finite conservative gate set can, for all $n$, implement all conservative even permutations of $A^n$ without auxiliary bits. But we provide a finite gate set that can implement all those conservative permutations that are even within each weight class of $A^n$.

Distributed Testing of Excluded Subgraphs

We study property testing in the context of distributed computing, under the classical CONGEST model. It is known that testing whether a graph is triangle-free can be done in a constant number of rounds, where the constant depends on how far the input graph is from being triangle-free. We show that, for every connected 4-node graph H, testing whether a graph is H-free can be done in a constant number of rounds too. The constant also depends on how far the input graph is from being H-free, and the dependence is identical to the one in the case of testing triangles. Hence, in particular, testing whether a graph is K_4-free, and testing whether a graph is C_4-free can be done in a constant number of rounds (where K_k denotes the k-node clique, and C_k denotes the k-node cycle). On the other hand, we show that testing K_k-freeness and C_k-freeness for k>4 appear to be much harder. Specifically, we investigate two natural types of generic algorithms for testing H-freeness, called DFS tester and BFS tester. The latter captures the previously known algorithm to test the presence of triangles, while the former captures our generic algorithm to test the presence of a 4-node graph pattern H. We prove that both DFS and BFS testers fail to test K_k-freeness and C_k-freeness in a constant number of rounds for k>4.

The group of reversible Turing machines

We consider Turing machines as actions over configurations in $Σ^{\mathbb{Z}^d}$ which only change them locally around a marked position that can move and carry a particular state. In this setting we study the monoid of Turing machines and the group of reversible Turing machines. We also study two natural subgroups, namely the group of finite-state automata, which generalizes the topological full groups studied in the theory of orbit-equivalence, and the group of oblivious Turing machines whose movement is independent of tape contents, which generalizes lamplighter groups and has connections to the study of universal reversible logical gates. Our main results are that the group of Turing machines in one dimension is neither amenable nor residually finite, but is locally embeddable in finite groups, and that the torsion problem is decidable for finite-state automata in dimension one, but not in dimension two.

Strongly Universal Reversible Gate Sets

It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of $\{0,1\}^n$ can be implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: If $A$ is a finite set of odd cardinality then a finite gate set can generate all permutations of $A^n$ for all $n$, without any auxiliary symbols. If the cardinality of $A$ is even then, by the same argument as above, only even permutations of $A^n$ can be implemented for large $n$, and we show that indeed all even permutations can be obtained from a finite universal gate set. We also consider the conservative case, that is, those permutations of $A^n$ that preserve the weight of the input word. The weight is the vector that records how many times each symbol occurs in the word. It turns out that no finite conservative gate set can, for all $n$, implement all conservative even permutations of $A^n$ without auxiliary bits. But we provide a finite gate set that can implement all those conservative permutations that are even within each weight class of $A^n$.

A note on subgroups of automorphism groups of full shifts

We discuss the set of subgroups of the automorphism group of a full shift, and submonoids of its endomorphism monoid. We prove closure under direct products in the monoid case, and free products in the group case. We also show that the automorphism group of a full shift embeds in that of an uncountable sofic shift. Some undecidability results are obtained as corollaries.

Factor Colorings of Linearly Recurrent Words

In this short article, we study factor colorings of aperiodic linearly recurrent infinite words. We show that there always exists a coloring which does not admit a monochromatic factorization of the word into factors of increasing lengths.

A One-Dimensional Physically Universal Cellular Automaton

Physical universality of a cellular automaton was defined by Janzing in 2010 as the ability to implement an arbitrary transformation of spatial patterns. In 2014, Schaeffer gave a construction of a two-dimensional physically universal cellular automaton. We construct a one-dimensional version of the automaton.

PSPACE-Completeness of Majority Automata Networks

We study the dynamics of majority automata networks when the vertices are updated according to a block sequential updating scheme. In particular, we show that the complexity of the problem of predicting an eventual state change in some vertex, given an initial configuration, is PSPACE-complete.

Decidability and Universality of Quasiminimal Subshifts

We introduce the quasiminimal subshifts, subshifts having only finitely many subsystems. With $\mathbb{N}$-actions, their theory essentially reduces to the theory of minimal systems, but with $\mathbb{Z}$-actions, the class is much larger. We show many examples of such subshifts, and in particular construct a universal system with only a single proper subsystem, refuting a conjecture of [Delvenne, Kůrka, Blondel, '05].

Toeplitz subshift whose automorphism group is not finitely generated

We compute an explicit representation of the (topological) automorphism group or a particular Toeplitz subshift. The automorphism group is a (non-finitely generated) subgroup of rational numbers under addition and the shift map corresponds to the rational number 1. The group is the additive subgroup of the rational numbers generated by the powers of 5/2.

Plane-Walking Automata

In this article, we study classes of multidimensional subshifts defined by multihead finite automata, in particular the hierarchy of classes of subshifts defined as the number of heads grows. The hierarchy collapses on the third level, where all co-recursively enumerable subshifts are obtained in every dimension. We also compare these classes to SFTs and sofic shifts. We are unable to separate the second and third level of the hierarchy in one and two dimensions, and suggest a related open problem for two-counter machines.

Trace Complexity of Chaotic Reversible Cellular Automata

Delvenne, Kůrka and Blondel have defined new notions of computational complexity for arbitrary symbolic systems, and shown examples of effective systems that are computationally universal in this sense. The notion is defined in terms of the trace function of the system, and aims to capture its dynamics. We present a Devaney-chaotic reversible cellular automaton that is universal in their sense, answering a question that they explicitly left open. We also discuss some implications and limitations of the construction.

Block Maps between Primitive Uniform and Pisot Substitutions

In this article, we prove that for all pairs of primitive Pisot or uniform substitutions with the same dominating eigenvalue, there exists a finite set of block maps such that every block map between the corresponding subshifts is an element of this set, up to a shift.

Constructions with Countable Subshifts of Finite Type

We present constructions of countable two-dimensional subshifts of finite type (SFTs) with interesting properties. Our main focus is on properties of the topological derivatives and subpattern posets of these objects. We present a countable SFT whose iterated derivatives are maximally complex from the computational point of view, constructions of countable SFTs with high Cantor-Bendixson ranks, a countable SFT whose subpattern poset contains an infinite descending chain and a countable SFT whose subpattern poset contains all finite posets. When possible, we make these constructions deterministic, and ensure the sets of rows are very simple as one-dimensional subshifts.

Playing with Subshifts

We study the class of word-building games, where two players pick letters from a finite alphabet to construct a finite or infinite word. The outcome is determined by whether the resulting word lies in a prescribed set (a win for player $A$) or not (a win for player $B$). We focus on symbolic dynamical games, where the target set is a subshift. We investigate the relation between the target subshift and the set of turn orders for which $A$ has a winning strategy.

On Derivatives and Subpattern Orders of Countable Subshifts

We study the computational and structural aspects of countable two-dimensional SFTs and other subshifts. Our main focus is on the topological derivatives and subpattern posets of these objects, and our main results are constructions of two-dimensional countable subshifts with interesting properties. We present an SFT whose iterated derivatives are maximally complex from the computational point of view, a sofic shift whose subpattern poset contains an infinite descending chain, a family of SFTs whose finite subpattern posets contain arbitrary finite posets, and a natural example of an SFT with infinite Cantor-Bendixon rank.
