Optimisation of a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter energy response to photons

An innovative path for the detectors at future colliders to achieve higher performances is to use a Particle Flow approach, which requires highly granular calorimeters to image individual showers. The silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (SiW-ECAL) aims at fulfilling all the expected physical and technical requirements. SiW-ECAL has been developed by the CALICE and ILD collaborations for more than two decades and is now reaching maturity, for linear machines. However, with the tendency towards circular machines, the progress of electronics and the rapid advancement of machine learning (ML) techniques, the SiW-ECAL design needs to be reoptimised to enhance its performance. This study develops ML-based reconstruction approaches for SiW-ECAL, achieving an approximate 20% improvement in energy resolution in the low-energy range and effectively correcting energy leakage in the high-energy range. Subsequently, the SiW-ECAL design is reoptimized based on this method.

Energy and Time Histograms: Fluxes determination in calorimeters

In high-granularity calorimetry, as proposed for detectors at future Higgs factories, the requirements on electronics can have a strong impact on the design of the detector, especially via the cooling and acquisition systems. This project aims to establish the typical fluxes in the calorimeters: deposited energy, number of cells above the electronics threshold, additional heat, and associated data, etc. Here, a software package is presented which outputs histograms for different selections of the calorimeter components from fully simulated physics and background events. The ILD calorimeter system is taken as a specific example, upon which different histograms are obtained for representative parts of the calorimeter and for various machine configurations. Examples of histograms are shown, along with all details of the data used and the simulation.

New results from the technological prototype of the CALICE highly-granular silicon tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter

An extended version of the CALICE silicon-tungsten ECAL was tested in November 2021 at the DESY beam test facility. With 15 active layers, it featured some with a thin PCB design, and a new compact DAQ system handling all layers in a common set. The noise, self-trigger performances and response to punch-though electrons, without tungsten absorbers, have been evaluated for each of the 15360 channels, using an improved procedure. Showers of low-energy electrons (1 to 6 GeV) have been recorded in two configurations of absorber, and are being analysed. Some preliminary results at the cell level will be presented.

Cluster time measurement with CEPC calorimeter

We have developed an algorithm dedicated to timing reconstruction in highly granular calorimeters(HGC). The performance of this algorithm is evaluated on an electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) with geometries comparable to the electromagnetic compartment (CE-E) of the CMS endcap calorimeter upgrade at HL-LHC and conceptual Particle Flow oriented ECAL's for future Higgs factories. The time response of individual channel is parameterized according to the CMS experimental result. The particle Time-of-Flight (ToF) can be measured with a resolution of $5\sim20 \;\rm{ps}$ for electromagnetic (EM) showers and $80\sim 160 \;\rm{ps}$ for hadronic showers above 1 GeV. The presented algorithm provides comparable reconstruction with the $E_{\mathrm{hit}}^2$ weighting strategy and can significantly improve the time resolution compared to a simple averaging of the fast component of the time spectrum. The effects of three detector configurations are also quantified in this study. ToF resolution depends linearly on the timing resolution of a single silicon sensor and improves statistically with increasing incident particle energy. The timing layers at depth of $6\sim 9$ radiation lengths provide higher timing performance for EM showers. A clustering algorithm that vetoes isolated hits improves ToF resolution.

The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

A combined fit to the Higgs Branching Ratios at ILD

Higgs decay branching ratios at future Higgs factories can be measured by directly exploiting class numeration. Given the clean environment at a lepton collider, it is possible to build an event sample highly enriched in Higgs bosons and essentially unbiased for any decay mode. The sample can be partitioned into categories using event properties linked to the expected Higgs decay modes. The counts per category are used to fit the Higgs branching ratios in a model independent way. The result of the fit is the set of branching ratios, independent from a Higgs production mode measurement. We present a simplified study on simulated data for the International Linear Detector (ILD) at the International Linear Collider (ILC) at 250 GeV center-of-mass energy.

ILD Silicon Tungsten Electromagnetic Calorimeter First Full Scale Electronic Prototype

The long slab is a new prototype for the SiW-Ecal, a silicon tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for the ILD detector of the future International Linear Collider. This new prototype has been designed to demonstrate the ability to build a full length detecting layer (1.60m for the ILD barrel). Indeed, this length induces difficulties for clock and signal propagation and data integrity. The design used for short length slabs had to be adapted on the basis of a simulation study. The long slab performance has been tested with cosmics, radioactive source and with 3 GeV electrons in the beam tests at DESY, Hamburg. The results of the per-channel calibration of the detector are presented. In DESY beam tests we have accumulated data for both normal and inclined incidence of the beam. With the latter one particle can sometimes traverse two pixels and deposit less energy per pixel. We show how this can be used to measure the position of the trigger threshold. This new prototype gives us a lot of hints on how to improve the design of the front-end electronics. It is also a convenient tool to estimate the key characteristics of ILD SiW-Ecal (like power consumption, cooling, readout time etc.) and to optimize the future design of the detector.

Higgs to $\tau\tau$ analysis in the future $e^{+}e^{-}$ Higgs factories

The Circular Electron Positron Collider and International Linear Collider are two electron positron Higgs factories. They are designed to operate at center-of-mass energy of 240 and 250 GeV and accumulate 5.6 and 2 $ab^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Using CEPC official samples, the signal strength for Higgs to $\tau\tau$ events are analyzed. The combined accuracy of the signal strength for $H\rightarrow \tau\tau$ at CEPC achieves 0.8\%. Extrapolating this analysis to the ILC setup, we conclude the ILC can reach a relative accuracy of 1.1\% or 1.2\%, corresponding to two benchmark settings of the beam polarization.

Reconstruction of physics objects at the Circular Electron Positron Collider with Arbor

After the Higgs discovery, precise measurements of the Higgs properties and the electroweak observables become vital for the experimental particle physics. A powerful Higgs/Z factory, the Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC) is proposed. The Particle Flow oriented detector design is proposed to the CEPC and a Particle Flow algorithm, Arbor is optimized accordingly. We summarize the physics object reconstruction performance of the Particle Flow oriented detector design with Arbor algorithm and conclude that this combination fulfills the physics requirement of CEPC.

Lepton identification at particle flow oriented detector for the future $e^{+}e^{-}$ Higgs factories

The lepton identification is essential for the physics programs at high-energy frontier, especially for the precise measurement of the Higgs boson. For this purpose, a Toolkit for Multivariate Data Analysis (TMVA) based lepton identification (LICH) has been developed for detectors using high granularity calorimeters. Using the conceptual detector geometry for the Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC) and single charged particle samples with energy larger than 2 GeV, LICH identifies electrons/muons with efficiencies higher than 99.5% and controls the mis-identification rate of hadron to muons/electrons to better than 1%/0.5%. Reducing the calorimeter granularity by 1-2 orders of magnitude, the lepton identification performance is stable for particles with E > 2 GeV. Applied to fully simulated eeH/$\mu\mu$H events, the lepton identification performance is consistent with the single particle case: the efficiency of identifying all the high energy leptons in an event, is 95.5-98.5%.

Reconstruction and classification of tau lepton decays with ILD

Tau-lepton decays with up to two $\pi^0$'s in the final state, $\tau^+ \to \pi^+ \bar{\nu}_\tau$, $\rho^+ (\pi^+\pi^0) \bar{\nu}_\tau$, $a^+_1 (\pi^+\pi^0\pi^0) \bar{\nu}_\tau$, are used to study the performance of the barrel part of the silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter (Si-W ECAL) of the International Large Detector (ILD) at the future $e^+-e^-$ International Linear Collider. A correct reconstruction of the tau decay mode is crucial for constraining the tau spin state and measuring the Higgs boson CP state in $H\to \tau^+\tau^-$ decays. About 95% of $\pi^+ \bar{\nu}_\tau$ and 90% of $\rho^+\bar{\nu}_\tau$ and $a^+_1\bar{\nu}_\tau$ decays from $e^+e^-\to Z^0\to \tau^+\tau^-$ reaction at $e^\pm$-beam energy of 125 GeV are correctly reconstructed. In a smaller ILD detector, with Si-W ECAL radius reduced by about 20% these numbers degrade by at most 2%. The $\pi^0$ mass resolution stays below 10%. Since the failures in the tau-lepton reconstruction are mainly due to photons, the increase of the ILD magnetic field from 3.5 T to 4 T does not bring any significant improvement.

Fractal Dimension of Particle Showers Measured in a Highly Granular Calorimeter

We explore the fractal nature of particle showers using Monte-Carlo simulation. We define the fractal dimension of showers measured in a high granularity calorimeter designed for a future lepton collider. The shower fractal dimension reveals detailed information of the spatial configuration of the shower. %the information hidden in the details of shower spatial configuration, It is found to be characteristic of the type of interaction and highly sensitive to the nature of the incident particle. Using the shower fractal dimension, we demonstrate a particle identification algorithm that can efficiently separate electromagnetic showers, hadronic showers and non-showering tracks. We also find a logarithmic dependence of the shower fractal dimension on the particle energy.

Test beam studies for a highly granular GRPC Semi-Digital HCAL

The Particle Flow Analysis approach retained for the future ILC detectors requires high granularity and compact particle energy deposition. A Glass Resistive Plate Chamber based Semi-Digital calorimeter can offer both at a low price for the hadronic section. This paper presents some recent developments and results near test beam in the use of Glass Resistive Plate Chamber with embedded front-end electronics to build a prototype based on this principle. All the critical parameters such as the spatial and angular uniformity of the response as well as the noise level have been measured on small chambers and found to be appropriate. Small semi-conductive chambers allowing for high rates and a large chamber have also been tested.

Status of Simulation Tools for the ILD ScECAL

The scintillator-strip electromagnetic calorimeter (ScECAL) is one of the calorimeter technic for the ILC. To achieve the fine granularity from the strip-segmented layers the strips in odd layers are orthogonal with respect to those in the even layers. In order to extract the best performance from such detector concept, a special reconstruction method and simulation tools are being developed in ILD collaboration. This manuscript repots the status of developing of those tools.
