$d$-wave altermagnetism revealed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Altermagnetism defines a third fundamental class of collinear magnetic order, featuring compensated magnetic moments with antiparallel spin alignment, yet lifted Kramers degeneracy without the need for relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Its ability to host spin-polarized electronic bands and unconventional chiral magnons makes it a promising platform for functional materials. However, experimental verification has proven challenging; while circular dichroism in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has been suggested as a signature of chiral magnons, it remains controversial whether this effect is an intrinsic property of altermagnetism or an artifact of experimental geometry. In this work, we resolve this debate and provide unambiguous experimental evidence of $d$-wave altermagnetism in the strongly correlated Lieb-lattice magnet La$_2$O$_3$Mn$_2$Se$_2$. The RIXS spectra exhibit a $d$-wave-symmetry circular dichroism in the magnetic excitations that vanishes in the paramagnetic phase. Through RIXS-operator symmetry analysis and exact-diagonalization calculations, we prove that the observed dichroism is a direct consequence of altermagnetic symmetry constraints, independent of magnon branch splitting. Our results provide definitive evidence for the experimental realization of $d$-wave altermagnetism in La$_2$O$_3$Mn$_2$Se$_2$ and establish circularly polarized RIXS as a highly symmetry-sensitive spectroscopic framework for detecting magnetic phases that evade conventional probes.

Coupled sawtooth chain exchange network in olivine Mn$_2$GeO$_4$

Sawtooth chain magnets have been a subject of historical interest in the field of frustrated magnetism, with classical olivine family $M_2TX_4$, ($M$ - 3d, $T$ - 4p, $X$ - chalcogen elements) typically realizing simple $\mathbf{k} = (000)$ states. The magnetism of the Mn$_2$GeO$_4$ olivine is surprisingly complex, proceeding from commensurate states to a multiferroic commensurate + incommensurate phase. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering results from a Mn$_2$GeO$_4$ single crystal and develop an effective Hamiltonian including long-distance bilinear and dipolar interactions. The magnetic interactions are predominantly antiferromagnetic and span a three-dimensional exchange network consisting of coupled sawtooth chains. Based on the determined strength of the couplings, the dominant sawtooth chains appear at third- and fourth- rather than next-nearest-neighbor. However the next-nearest-neighbor interaction is, along with a modest Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, important for modeling the observed incommensurability. We use the best-fit Hamiltonian as the basis for Langevin dynamics simulations and Luttinger-Tisza calculations of the high-temperature commensurate transition.

Absence of altermagnetic magnon band splitting in MnF$_2$

Altermagnets are collinear compensated magnets in which the magnetic sublattices are related by rotation rather than translation or inversion. One of the quintessential properties of altermagnets is the presence of split chiral magnon modes. Recently, such modes have been predicted in MnF$_2$. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering results on an MnF$_2$ single-crystal along high-symmetry Brillouin zone paths for which the magnon splitting is expected. Within the resolution of our measurement, we do not observe the predicted splitting. The inelastic spectrum is well-modeled using $J_1, ~J_2, ~J_3$ nearest-neighbor exchange interactions with weak uniaxial anisotropy. These interactions have higher symmetry than the crystal lattice, while the interactions predicted to produce the altermagnetic splitting are negligibly small. Therefore, the two magnon modes appear to be degenerate over the entire Brillouin zone and the spin dynamics of MnF$_2$ is indistinguishable from a classical Néel antiferromagnet. Application of magnetic field causes a Zeeman splitting of the magnon modes close to the $\mathrmΓ$ point. Even if chiral magnon modes are allowed by altermagnetic symmetry, the splitting in real materials such as MnF$_2$ can be negligibly small.

Non-collinear 2k antiferromagnetism in the Zintl semiconductor Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$

Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ is an orthorhombic non-symmorphic small band gap semiconductor with three distinct Eu$^{2+}$ sites and two low-temperature magnetic phase transitions. The material displays one of the greatest (negative) magnetoresistances of known stoichiometric antiferromagnets and belongs to a family of Zintl materials that may host an axion insulator. Using single crystal neutron diffraction, we show that the $T_{\mathrm{N1}}=14\mathrm{~K}$ second-order phase transition is associated with long-range antiferromagnetic order within the chemical unit cell $\left( k_1 = (000) \right)$. Upon cooling below $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$, the relative sublattice magnetizations of this structure vary until a second-order phase transition at $T_{\mathrm{N2}}=7\mathrm{~K}$ that doubles the unit cell along the $\hat{c}$ axis $\left( k_2 = \left(00\frac{1}{2}\right) \right)$. We show the anisotropic susceptibility and our magnetic neutron diffraction data are consistent with magnetic structures described by the $Γ_3$ irreducible representation with the staggered magnetization of the $k_1$ and $k_2$ components polarized along the $\hat{b}$ and $\hat{a}$ axis, respectively. As the $k_2$ component develops, the amplitude of the $k_1$ component is reduced, which indicates a 2k non-collinear magnetic structure. Density functional theory is used to calculate the energies of these magnetic structures and to show the $k_1$ phase is a metal so $T_{\mathrm{N1}}$ is a rare example of a unit-cell-preserving second-order phase transition from a paramagnetic semiconductor to an antiferromagnetic metal. DFT indicates the transition at $T_{\mathrm{N2}}$ to a doubled unit cell reduces the carrier density of the metal, which is consistent with resistivity data.
