The 3d mixed BF Lagrangian 1-form: a variational formulation of Hitchin's integrable system

We introduce the concept of gauged Lagrangian $1$-forms, extending the notion of Lagrangian $1$-forms to the setting of gauge theories. This general formalism is applied to a natural geometric Lagrangian $1$-form on the cotangent bundle of the space of holomorphic structures on a smooth principal $G$-bundle $\mathcal{P}$ over a compact Riemann surface $C$ of arbitrary genus $g$, with or without marked points, in order to gauge the symmetry group of smooth bundle automorphisms of $\mathcal{P}$. The resulting construction yields a multiform version of the $3$d mixed BF action with so-called type A and B defects, providing a variational formulation of Hitchin's completely integrable system over $C$. By passing to holomorphic local trivialisations and going partially on-shell, we obtain a unifying action for a hierarchy of Lax equations describing the Hitchin system in terms of meromorphic Lax matrices. The cases of genus $0$ and $1$ with marked points are treated in greater detail, producing explicit Lagrangian $1$-forms for the rational Gaudin hierarchy and the elliptic Gaudin hierarchy, respectively, with the elliptic spin Calogero-Moser hierarchy arising as a special subcase.

Breather interactions in the integrable discrete Manakov system and trigonometric Yang-Baxter maps

The goal of this work is to obtain a complete characterization of soliton and breather interactions in the integrable discrete Manakov (IDM) system, a vector generalization of the Ablowitz-Ladik model. The IDM system, which in the continuous limit reduces to the Manakov system (i.e., a 2-component vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation), was shown to admit a variety of discrete vector soliton solutions: fundamental solitons, fundamental breathers, and composite breathers. While the interaction of fundamental solitons was studied early on, no results are presently available for other types of soliton-breather and breather-breather interactions. Our study reveals that upon interacting with a fundamental breather, a fundamental soliton becomes a fundamental breather. Conversely, the interaction of two fundamental breathers generically yields two fundamental breathers with polarization shifts, but may also result in a fundamental soliton and a fundamental breather. Composite breathers interact trivially both with each other and with a fundamental soliton or breather. Explicit formulas for the scattering coefficients that characterize fundamental and composite breathers are given. This allows us to interpret the interactions in terms of a refactorization problem and derive the associated Yang-Baxter maps describing the effect of interactions on the polarizations. These give the first examples of parametric Yang-Baxter maps of trigonometric type.

On the geometry of Lagrangian one-forms

Lagrangian multiform theory is a variational framework for integrable systems. In this article we introduce a new formulation which is based on symplectic geometry and which treats position, momentum and time coordinates of a finite-dimensional integrable hierarchy on an equal footing. This formulation allows a streamlined one-step derivation of both the multi-time Euler-Lagrange equations and the closure relation (encoding integrability). We argue that any Lagrangian one-form for a finite-dimensional system can be recast in our new framework. This framework easily extends to non-commuting flows and we show that the equations characterising (infinitesimal) Hamiltonian Lie group actions are variational in character. We reinterpret these equations as a system of compatible non autonomous Hamiltonian equations.

Hamiltonian formulation and aspects of integrability of generalised hydrodynamics

Generalised Hydrodynamics (GHD) describes the large-scale inhomogeneous dynamics of integrable (or close to integrable) systems in one dimension of space, based on a central equation for the fluid density or quasi-particle density: the GHD equation. We consider a new, general form of the GHD equation: we allow for spatially extended interaction kernels, generalising previous constructions. We show that the GHD equation, in our general form and hence also in its conventional form, is Hamiltonian. This holds also including force terms representing inhomogeneous external potentials coupled to conserved densities. To this end, we introduce a new Poisson bracket on functionals of the fluid density, which is seen as our dynamical field variable. The total energy is the Hamiltonian whose flow under this Poisson bracket generates the GHD equation. The fluid density depends on two (real and spectral) variables so the GHD equation can be seen as a $2+1$-dimensional classical field theory. In its $1+1$-dimensional reduction corresponding to the case without external forces, we further show the system admits an infinite set of conserved quantities that are in involution for our Poisson bracket, hinting at integrability of this field theory.

Lagrangian Multiform for Cyclotomic Gaudin Models

We construct a Lagrangian multiform for the class of cyclotomic (rational) Gaudin models by formulating its hierarchy within the Lie dialgebra framework of Semenov-Tian-Shansky and by using the framework of Lagrangian multiforms on coadjoint orbits. This provides the first example of a Lagrangian multiform for an integrable hierarchy whose classical $r$-matrix is non-skew-symmetric and spectral parameter-dependent. As an important by-product of the construction, we obtain a Lagrangian multiform for the periodic Toda chain by choosing an appropriate realisation of the cyclotomic Gaudin Lax matrix. This fills a gap in the landscape of Toda models as only the open and infinite chains had been previously cast into the Lagrangian multiform framework. A slightly different choice of realisation produces the so-called discrete self-trapping (DST) model. We demonstrate the versatility of the framework by coupling the periodic Toda chain with the DST model and by obtaining a Lagrangian multiform for the corresponding integrable hierarchy.

Reflection Maps Associated with Involutions and Factorization Problems, and Their Poisson Geometry

The study of the set-theoretic solutions of the reflection equation, also known as reflection maps, is closely related to that of the Yang-Baxter maps. In this work, we construct reflection maps on various geometrical objects, associated with factorization problems on rational loop groups and involutions. We show that such reflection maps are smoothly conjugate to the composite of permutation maps, with corresponding reduced Yang-Baxter maps. In the case when the reduced Yang-Baxter maps are independent of parameters, the latter are just braiding operators. We also study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of such reflection maps. In a special case, the factorization problems are associated with the collision of N-solitons of the n-Manakov system with a boundary, and in this context the N-body polarization reflection map is a symplectomorphism.

Lagrangian multiforms on coadjoint orbits for finite-dimensional integrable systems

Lagrangian multiforms provide a variational framework to describe integrable hierarchies. The case of Lagrangian $1$-forms covers finite-dimensional integrable systems. We use the theory of Lie dialgebras introduced by Semenov-Tian-Shansky to construct a Lagrangian $1$-form. Given a Lie dialgebra associated with a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and a collection $H_k$, $k=1,\dots,N$, of invariant functions on $\mathfrak{g}^*$, we give a formula for a Lagrangian multiform describing the commuting flows for $H_k$ on a coadjoint orbit in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We show that the Euler-Lagrange equations for our multiform produce the set of compatible equations in Lax form associated with the underlying $r$-matrix of the Lie dialgebra. We establish a structural result which relates the closure relation for our multiform to the Poisson involutivity of the Hamiltonians $H_k$ and the so-called ``double zero'' on the Euler-Lagrange equations. The construction is extended to a general coadjoint orbit by using reduction from the free motion of the cotangent bundle of a Lie group. We illustrate the dialgebra construction of a Lagrangian multiform with the open Toda chain and the rational Gaudin model. The open Toda chain is built using two different Lie dialgebra structures on $\mathfrak{sl}(N+1)$. The first one possesses a non-skew-symmetric $r$-matrix and falls within the Adler-Kostant-Symes scheme. The second one possesses a skew-symmetric $r$-matrix. In both cases, the connection with the well-known descriptions of the chain in Flaschka and canonical coordinates is provided.

Soliton interactions and Yang-Baxter maps for the complex coupled short-pulse equation

The complex coupled short pulse equation (ccSPE) describes the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses in nonlinear birefringent fibers. The system admits a variety of vector soliton solutions: fundamental solitons, fundamental breathers, composite breathers (generic or non-generic), as well as so-called self-symmetric composite solitons. In this work, we use the dressing method and the Darboux matrices corresponding to the various types of solitons to investigate soliton interactions in the focusing ccSPE. The study combines refactorization problems on generators of certain rational loop groups, and long-time asymptotics of these generators, as well as the main refactorization theorem for the dressing factors which leads to the Yang-Baxter property for the refactorization map and the vector soliton interactions. Among the results obtained in this paper, we derive explicit formulas for the polarization shift of fundamental solitons which are the analog of the well-known formulas for the interaction of vector solitons in the Manakov system. Our study also reveals that upon interacting with a fundamental breather, a fundamental soliton becomes a fundamental breather and, conversely, that the interaction of two fundamental breathers generically yields two fundamental breathers with a polarization shifts, but may also result into a fundamental soliton and a fundamental breather. Explicit formulas for the coefficients that characterize the fundamental breathers, as well as for their polarization vectors are obtained. The interactions of other types of solitons are also derived and discussed in detail and illustrated with plots. New Yang-Baxter maps are obtained in the process.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line without a conserved number of solitons

We explore the phenomena of absorption/emission of solitons by an integrable boundary for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-line. This is based on the investigation of time-dependent reflection matrices which satisfy the boundary zero curvature equation. In particular, this leads to absorption/emission processes at the boundary that can take place for solitons and higher-order solitons. As a consequence, the usual charges on the half-line are no longer conserved but we show explicitly how to restore an infinite set of conserved quantities by taking the boundary into account. The Hamiltonian description and Poisson structure of the model are presented, which allows us to derive for the first time a classical version of the boundary algebra used originally in the context of the quantum nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Lagrangian multiforms on Lie groups and non-commuting flows

We describe a variational framework for non-commuting flows, extending the theories of Lagrangian multiforms and pluri-Lagrangian systems, which have gained prominence in recent years as a variational description of integrable systems in the sense of multidimensional consistency. In the context of non-commuting flows, the manifold of independent variables, often called multi-time, is a Lie group whose bracket structure corresponds to the commutation relations between the vector fields generating the flows. Natural examples are provided by superintegrable systems for the case of Lagrangian 1-form structures, and integrable hierarchies on loop groups in the case of Lagrangian 2-forms. As particular examples we discuss the Kepler problem, the rational Calogero-Moser system, and a generalisation of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur system with non-commuting flows. We view this endeavour as a first step towards a purely variational approach to Lie group actions on manifolds.

Classical Yang-Baxter equation, Lagrangian multiforms and ultralocal integrable hierarchies

We cast the classical Yang-Baxter equation (CYBE) in a variational context for the first time, by relating it to the theory of Lagrangian multiforms, a framework designed to capture integrability in a variational fashion. This provides a significant connection between Lagrangian multiforms and the CYBE, one of the most fundamental concepts of integrable systems. This is achieved by introducing a generating Lagrangian multiform which depends on a skew-symmetric classical $r$-matrix with spectral parameters. The multiform Euler-Lagrange equations produce a generating Lax equation which yields a generating zero curvature equation. The CYBE plays a role at three levels: 1) It ensures the commutativity of the flows of the generating Lax equation; 2) It ensures that the generating zero curvature equation holds; 3) It implies the closure relation for the generating Lagrangian multiform. The specification of an integrable hierarchy is achieved by fixing certain data: a finite set $S\in CP^1$, a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, a $\mathfrak{g}$-valued rational function with poles in $S$ and an $r$-matrix. We show how our framework is able to generate a large class of ultralocal integrable hierarchies by providing several known and new examples pertaining to the rational or trigonometric class. These include the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy, the sine-Gordon (sG) hierarchy and various hierachies related to Zakharov-Mikhailov type models which contain the Faddeev-Reshetikhin (FR) model and recently introduced deformed sigma/Gross-Neveu models as particular cases. The versatility of our method is illustrated by showing how to couple integrable hierarchies together to create new examples of integrable field theories and their hierarchies. We provide two examples: the coupling of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger system to the FR model and the coupling of sG with the anisotropic FR model.

Nonlinear mirror image method for nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation: Absorption/emission of one soliton by a boundary

We perform the analysis of the focusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on the half-line with time-dependent boundary conditions along the lines of the nonlinear method of images with the help of B\"acklund transformations. The difficulty arising from having such time-dependent boundary conditions at $x=0$ is overcome by changing the viewpoint of the method and fixing the B\"acklund transformation at infinity as well as relating its value at $x=0$ to a time-dependent reflection matrix. The interplay between the various aspects of integrable boundary conditions is reviewed in detail to brush a picture of the area. We find two possible classes of solutions. One is very similar to the case of Robin boundary conditions whereby solitons are reflected at the boundary, as a result of an effective interaction with their images on the other half-line. The new regime of solutions supports the existence of one soliton that is not reflected at the boundary but can be either absorbed or emitted by it. We demonstrate that this is a unique feature of time-dependent integrable boundary conditions.

On the Zakharov-Mikhailov action: $4$d Chern-Simons origin and covariant Poisson algebra of the Lax connection

We derive the $2$d Zakharov-Mikhailov action from $4$d Chern-Simons theory. This $2$d action is known to produce as equations of motion the flatness condition of a large class of Lax connections of Zakharov-Shabat type, which includes an ultralocal variant of the principal chiral model as a special case. At the $2$d level, we determine for the first time the covariant Poisson bracket $r$-matrix structure of the Zakharov-Shabat Lax connection, which is of rational type. The flatness condition is then derived as a covariant Hamilton equation. We obtain a remarkable formula for the covariant Hamiltonian in term of the Lax connection which is the covariant analogue of the well-known formula "$H=Tr L^2$".

Multiform description of the AKNS hierarchy and classical r-matrix

In recent years, new properties of space-time duality in the Hamiltonian formalism of certain integrable classical field theories have been discovered and have led to their reformulation using ideas from covariant Hamiltonian field theory: in this sense, the covariant nature of their classical $r$-matrix structure was unraveled. Here, we solve the open question of extending these results to a whole hierarchy. We choose the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. To do so, we introduce for the first time a Lagrangian multiform for the entire AKNS hierarchy. We use it to construct explicitly the necessary objects introduced previously by us: a symplectic multiform, a multi-time Poisson bracket and a Hamiltonian multiform. Equipped with these, we prove the following results: $(i)$ the Lax form containing the whole sequence of Lax matrices of the hierarchy possesses the rational classical $r$-matrix structure; $(ii)$ The zero curvature equations of the AKNS hierarchy are multiform Hamilton equations associated to our Hamiltonian multiform and multi-time Poisson bracket; $(iii)$ The Hamiltonian multiform provides a way to characterise the infinite set of conservation laws of the hierarchy reminiscent of the familiar criterion $\{I,H\}=0$ for a first integral $I$.

Hamiltonian multiform description of an integrable hierarchy

Motivated by the notion of Lagrangian multiforms, which provide a Lagrangian formulation of integrability, and by results of the authors on the role of covariant Hamiltonian formalism for integrable field theories, we propose the notion of Hamiltonian multiforms for integrable $1+1$-dimensional field theories. They provide the Hamiltonian counterpart of Lagrangian multiforms and encapsulate in a single object an arbitrary number of flows within an integrable hierarchy. For a given hierarchy, taking a Lagrangian multiform as starting point, we provide a systematic construction of a Hamiltonian multiform based on a generalisation of techniques of covariant Hamiltonian field theory. This also produces two other important objects: a symplectic multiform and the related multi-time Poisson bracket. They reduce to a multisymplectic form and the related covariant Poisson bracket if we restrict our attention to a single flow in the hierarchy. Our framework offers an alternative approach to define and derive conservation laws for a hierarchy. We illustrate our results on three examples: the potential Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy, the sine-Gordon hierarchy (in light cone coordinates) and the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur hierarchy.

Lagrangian multiforms for Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy

We present, for the first time, a Lagrangian multiform for the complete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy -- a single variational object that generates the whole hierarchy and encapsulates its integrability. By performing a reduction on this Lagrangian multiform, we also obtain Lagrangian multiforms for the Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy of hierarchies, comprising, amongst others, the Korteweg-de Vries and Boussinesq hierarchies.

Integrable boundary conditions for quad equations, open boundary reductions and integrable mappings

In the context of integrable partial difference equations on quad-graphs, we introduce the notion of open boundary reductions as a new means to construct discrete integrable mappings and their invariants. This represents an alternative to the well-known periodic reductions. The construction deals with well-posed initial value problems for quad equations on quad-graphs restricted to a strip. It relies on the so-called double-row monodromy matrix and gives rise to integrable mappings. To obtain the double-row monodromy matrix, we use the notion of boundary matrix and discrete boundary zero curvature condition, themselves related to the boundary consistency condition, which complements the well-known $3$D consistency condition for integrable quad equations and gives an integrability criterion for boundary equations. This relation is made precise in this paper. Our focus is on quad equations from the Adler-Bobenko-Suris (ABS) classification and their discrete integrable boundary equations. Taking as our prime example a regular $\mathbb{Z}^2$-lattice with two parallel boundaries, we provide an explicit construction of the maps obtained by open boundary reductions, the boundary matrices, as well as the invariants extracted from the double-row monodromy matrix. Examples of integrable maps are considered for the H1 and Q1($\delta =0$) equations and an interesting example of a non-QRT map of the plane is presented. Examples of well-posed quad-graph systems on a strip beyond the $\mathbb{Z}^2$-lattice are also given.

A connection between the classical r-matrix formalism and covariant Hamiltonian field theory

We bring together aspects of covariant Hamiltonian field theory and of classical integrable field theories in $1+1$ dimensions. Specifically, our main result is to obtain for the first time the classical $r$-matrix structure within a covariant Poisson bracket for the Lax connection, or Lax one form. This exhibits a certain covariant nature of the classical $r$-matrix with respect to the underlying spacetime variables. The main result is established by means of several prototypical examples of integrable field theories, all equipped with a Zakharov-Shabat type Lax pair. Full details are presented for: $a)$ the sine-Gordon model which provides a relativistic example associated to a classical $r$-matrix of trigonometric type; $b)$ the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the (complex) modified Korteweg-de Vries equation which provide two non-relativistic examples associated to the same classical $r$-matrix of rational type, characteristic of the AKNS hierarchy. The appearance of the $r$-matrix in a covariant Poisson bracket is a signature of the integrability of the field theory in a way that puts the independent variables on equal footing. This is in sharp contrast with the single-time Hamiltonian evolution context usually associated to the $r$-matrix formalism.
