Low-field Feshbach resonances and three-body losses in a fermionic quantum gas of $^{161}$Dy

We report on high-resolution Feshbach spectroscopy on a degenerate, spin-polarized Fermi gas of $^{161}$Dy atoms, measuring three-body recombination losses at low magnetic field. For field strength up to 1\,G, we identify as much as 44 resonance features and observe plateaus of very low losses. For four selected typical resonances, we study the dependence of the three-body recombination rate coefficient on the magnetic resonance detuning and on the temperature. We observe a strong suppression of losses with decreasing temperature already for small detunings from resonance. The characterization of complex behavior of three-body losses of fermionic $^{161}$Dy is important for future applications of this peculiar species in research on atomic quantum gases.

Measurement of the dynamic polarizability of Dy atoms near the 626-nm intercombination line

We report on measurements of the anisotropic dynamical polarizability of Dy near the 626-nm intercombination line, employing modulation spectroscopy in a one-dimensional optical lattice. To eliminate large systematic uncertainties resulting from the limited knowledge of the spatial intensity distribution, we use K as a reference species with accurately known polarizability. This method can be applied independently of the sign of the polarizability, i.e., for both attractive and repulsive optical fields on both sides of a resonance. By variation of the laser polarization we extract the scalar and the tensorial part. To characterize the strength of the transition, we also derive the natural linewidth. We find our result to be in excellent agreement with literature values, which provide a sensitive benchmark for the accuracy of our method. In addition we demonstrate optical dipole trapping on the intercombination line, confirming the expected long lifetimes and low heating rates. This provides an additional tool to tailor optical potentials for Dy atoms and for the species-specific manipulation of atoms in the Dy-K mixture.

Production of a degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture of dysprosium and potassium atoms

We report on the realization of a mixture of fermionic $^{161}$Dy and fermionic $^{40}$K where both species are deep in the quantum-degenerate regime. Both components are spin-polarized in their absolute ground states, and the low temperatures are achieved by means of evaporative cooling of the dipolar dysprosium atoms together with sympathetic cooling of the potassium atoms. We describe the trapping and cooling methods, in particular the final evaporation stage, which leads to Fermi degeneracy of both species. Analyzing cross-species thermalization we obtain an estimate of the magnitude of the inter-species $s$-wave scattering length at low magnetic field. We demonstrate magnetic levitation of the mixture as a tool to ensure spatial overlap of the two components. The properties of the Dy-K mixture make it a very promising candidate to explore the physics of strongly interacting mass-imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures.

Spin nematic order in antiferromagnetic spinor condensates

Large spin systems can exhibit unconventional types of magnetic ordering different from the ferromagnetic or Néel-like antiferromagnetic order commonly found in spin 1/2 systems. Spin-nematic phases, for instance, do not break time-reversal invariance and their magnetic order parameter is characterized by a second rank tensor with the symmetry of an ellipsoid. Here we show direct experimental evidence for spin-nematic ordering in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms with antiferromagnetic interactions. In a mean field description this order is enforced by locking the relative phase between spin components. We reveal this mechanism by studying the spin noise after a spin rotation, which is shown to contain information hidden when looking only at averages. The method should be applicable to high spin systems in order to reveal complex magnetic phases.

Spin fragmentation of Bose-Einstein condensates with antiferromagnetic interactions

We study spin fragmentation of an antiferromagnetic spin 1 condensate in the presence of a quadratic Zeeman (QZ) effect breaking spin rotational symmetry. We describe how the QZ effect turns a fragmented spin state, with large fluctuations of the Zeemans populations, into a regular polar condensate, where atoms all condense in the $m=0$ state along the field direction. We calculate the average value and variance of the Zeeman state $m=0$ to illustrate clearly the crossover from a fragmented to an unfragmented state. The typical width of this crossover is $q \sim k_B T/N$, where $q$ is the QZ energy, $T$ the spin temperature and $N$ the atom number. This shows that spin fluctuations are a mesoscopic effect that will not survive in the thermodynamic limit $N\rightarrow \infty$, but are observable for sufficiently small atom number.

Phase diagram of spin 1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

We study experimentally the equilibrium phase diagram of a spin 1 Bose-Einstein condensate with antiferromagnetic interactions, in a regime where spin and spatial degrees of freedom are decoupled. For a given total magnetization mz, we observe for low magnetic fields an "antiferromagnetic" phase where atoms condense in the m=+/-1 Zeeman states, and occupation of the m=0 state is suppressed. Conversely, for large enough magnetic fields, a phase transition to a "broken axisymmetry" phase takes place: The m=0 component becomes populated and rises sharply above a critical field Bc(mz). This behavior results from the competition between antiferromagnetic spin-dependent interactions (dominant at low fields) and the quadratic Zeeman energy (dominant at large fields). We compare the measured Bc as well as the global shape of the phase diagram with mean-field theory, and find good quantitative agreement.
