We provide an explicit lower bound for the sytole in principal congruence covers of compact quaternionic hyperbolic manifolds. We also prove the optimality of this lower bound.
We introduce and motivate a notion of pseudo-arithmeticity, which possibly applies to all lattices in $\mathrm{PO}(n,1)$ with $n>3$. We further show that under an additional assumption (satisfied in all known cases), the covolumes of these lattices correspond to rational linear combinations of special values of $L$-functions.
In this paper we prove that there is a direct relationship between Salem numbers and translation lengths of hyperbolic elements of arithmetic hyperbolic groups that are determined by a quadratic form over a totally real number field. As an application we determine a sharp lower bound for the length of a closed geodesic in a noncompact arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifold for each dimension n. We also discuss a "short geodesic conjecture", and prove its equivalence with "Lehmer's conjecture" for Salem numbers.
For any n>1 we determine the uniform and nonuniform lattices of the smallest covolume in the Lie group Sp(n,1). We explicitly describe them in terms of the ring of Hurwitz integers in the nonuniform case with n even, respectively, of the icosian ring in the uniform case for all n>1.
We prove that the covolume of any quasi-arithmetic hyperbolic lattice (a notion that generalizes the definition of arithmetic subgroups) is a rational multiple of the covolume of an arithmetic subgroup. As a corollary, we obtain a good description for the shape of the volumes of most of the known hyperbolic n-manifolds with n>3.
Elaborating on a method of Soulé, and using better estimates for the geometry of hermitian lattices, we improve the upper bounds for the torsion part of the K-theory of the rings of integers of number fields.
We obtain upper bounds for the torsion in the $K$-groups of the ring of integers of imaginary quadratic number fields, in terms of their discriminants.
We conjecture that for every dimension n not equal 3 there exists a noncompact hyperbolic n-manifold whose volume is smaller than the volume of any compact hyperbolic n-manifold. For dimensions n at most 4 and n=6 this conjecture follows from the known results. In this paper we show that the conjecture is true for arithmetic hyperbolic n-manifolds of dimension n at least 30.
We study upper bounds for the torsion in homology of nonuniform arithmetic lattices. Together with recent results of Calegari-Venkatesh, this can be used to obtain upper bounds on K2 of the ring of integers of totally imaginary fields.
We prove that for n>4 there is no compact arithmetic hyperbolic n-manifold whose Euler characteristic has absolute value equal to 2. In particular, this shows the nonexistence of arithmetically defined hyperbolic rational homology n-sphere with n even different than 4.
We compute the hyperbolic covolume of the automorphism group of each even unimodular Lorentzian lattice. The result is obtained as a consequence of a previous work with Belolipetsky, which uses Prasad's volume to compute the volumes of the smallest hyperbolic arithmetic orbifolds.
We determine the three hyperbolic 5-orbifolds of smallest volume among compact arithmetic orbifolds, and we identify their fundamental groups with hyperbolic Coxeter groups. This gives two different ways to compute the volume of these orbifolds.
This paper studies the covolumes of nonuniform arithmetic lattices in PU(n, 1). We determine the smallest covolume nonuniform arithmetic lattices for each n, the number of minimal covolume lattices for each n, and study the growth of the minimal covolume as n varies. In particular, there is a unique lattice (up to conjugacy) in PU(9, 1) of smallest Euler--Poincaré characteristic amongst all nonuniform arithmetic lattices in PU(n, 1). We also show that for each even n, there are arbitrarily large families of nonisomorphic maximal nonuniform lattices in PU(n, 1) of equal covolume.
We determine the minimal volume of arithmetic hyperbolic orientable n-dimensional orbifolds (compact and non-compact) for every odd dimension n>3. Combined with the previously known results it solves the minimal volume problem for arithmetic hyperbolic n-orbifolds in all dimensions.
In any connected non-compact semi-simple Lie group without factors locally isomorphic to SL_2(R), there can be only finitely many lattices (up to isomorphism) of a given covolume. We show that there exist arbitrarily large families of pairwise non-isomorphic arithmetic lattices of the same covolume. We construct these lattices with the help of Bruhat-Tits theory, using Prasad's volume formula to control their covolumes.
