A group-theoretic framework for low-dimensional topology

A correspondence, by way of Heegaard splittings, between closed oriented 3-manifolds and pairs of surjections from a surface group to a free group has been studied by Stallings, Jaco, and Hempel. This correspondence, by way of trisections, was recently extended by Abrams, Gay, and Kirby to the case of smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. We unify these perspectives and generalize this correspondence to the case of links in closed oriented 3-manifolds and links of knotted surfaces in smooth, closed, connected, oriented 4-manifolds. The algebraic manifestations of these four subfields of low-dimensional topology (3-manifolds, 4-manifolds, knot theory, and knotted surface theory) are all strikingly similar, and this correspondence perhaps elucidates some unique character of low-dimensional topology.

An infinite family of counterexamples to Batson's conjecture

Batson's conjecture is a non-orientable version of Milnor's conjecture, which states that the 4-ball genus of a torus knot $T(p,q)$ is equal to $\frac{(p-1)(q-1)}{2}$. Batson's conjecture states that the nonorientable 4-ball genus is equal to the pinch number of a torus knot, i.e. the number of a specific type of (nonorientable) band surgeries needed to obtain the unknot. The conjecture was recently proved to be false by Lobb. We will show that Lobb's counterexample fits into an infinite family of counterexamples.

On 2-knots and connected sums with projective planes

In this paper, we generalize a result of Satoh to show that for any odd natural $n$, the connected sum of the $n$-twist spun sphere of a knot $K$ and an unknotted projective plane in the 4-sphere is equivalent to the same unknotted projective plane. We additionally provide a fix to a small error in Satoh's proof of the case that $K$ is a 2-bridge knot.

State invariants of two-bridge knots

In this paper, we consider generalizations of the Alexander polynomial and signature of 2-bridge knots by considering the Gordon-Litherland bilinear forms associated to essential state surfaces of the 2-bridge knots. We show that the resulting invariants are well-defined and explore properties of these invariants. Finally we realize the boundary slopes of the essential surfaces as a difference of signatures of the knot.
