Anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz Model in Discrete Space-Time

We construct an integrable lattice model of classical interacting spins in discrete space-time, representing a discrete-time analogue of the lattice Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet with uniaxial anisotropy. As an application we use this explicit discrete symplectic integration scheme to compute the spin Drude weight and diffusion constant as functions of anisotropy and chemical potential. We demonstrate qualitatively different behavior in the easy-axis and the easy-plane regimes in the non-magnetized sector. Upon approaching the isotropic point we also find an algebraic divergence of the diffusion constant, signaling a crossover to spin superdiffusion.

Integrable fishnet circuits and Brownian solitons

We introduce classical many-body dynamics on a one-dimensional lattice comprising local two-body maps arranged on discrete space-time mesh that serve as discretizations of Hamiltonian dynamics with arbitrarily time-varying coupling constants. Time evolution is generated by passing an auxiliary degree of freedom along the lattice, resulting in a `fishnet' circuit structure. We construct integrable circuits consisting of Yang-Baxter maps and demonstrate their general properties, using the Toda and anisotropic Landau-Lifschitz models as examples. Upon stochastically rescaling time, the dynamics is dominated by fluctuations and we observe solitons undergoing Brownian motion.

Feedback loop dependent charge density wave imaging by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) is a unique technique to probe the local density of states (LDOS) at the atomic scale by measuring the tunneling conductance between a sharp tip and a sample surface. However, the technique suffers of well-known limitations, the so-called set-point effect, which can potentially introduce artifacts in the measurements. We compare several STS imaging schemes applied to the LDOS modulations of the charge density wave state on atomically flat surfaces, and demonstrate that only constant-height STS is capable of mapping the intrinsic LDOS. In the constant-current STS, commonly used and easier-to-implement, the tip-sample distance variations imposed by the feedback loop result in set-point-dependent STS images and possibly mislead the identification of the CDW gap edges.

Universal anomalous fluctuations in charged single-file systems

Introducing a general class of one-dimensional single-file systems (meaning that particle crossings are prohibited) of interacting hardcore particles with internal degrees of freedom (called charge), we exhibit a novel type of dynamical universality reflected in anomalous statistical properties of macroscopic fluctuating observables such as charge transfer. We find that stringent dynamical constraints lead to universal anomalous statistics of cumulative charge currents manifested both on the timescale characteristic of typical fluctuations and also in the rate function describing rare events. By computing the full counting statistics of net transferred charge between two extended subsystems, we establish a number of unorthodox dynamical properties in an analytic fashion. Most prominently, typical fluctuations in equilibrium are governed by a universal distribution that markedly deviates from the expected Gaussian statistics, whereas large fluctuations are described by an exotic large-deviation rate function featuring an exceptional triple critical point. Far from equilibrium, competition between dynamical phases leads to dynamical phase transitions of first and second order and spontaneous breaking of fluctuation symmetry of the univariate charge large-deviation function. The rich phenomenology of the outlined dynamical universality is exemplified on an exactly solvable classical cellular automaton of charged hardcore particles. We determine the dynamical phase diagram in the framework of Lee-Yang's theory of phase transitions and exhibit a hyper-dimensional diagram of distinct dynamical regimes. Our findings lead us to conclude that the conventional classification of dynamical universality classes based on the algebraic dynamical exponents and asymptotic scaling functions that characterize hydrodynamic relaxation of the dynamical structure factor is incomplete and calls for refinement.

Tunable biaxial strain device for low dimensional materials

Strain is attracting much interest as a mean to tune the properties of thin exfoliated two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures. Numerous devices to apply tunable uniaxial strain are proposed in the literature, but only few for biaxial strain where there is often a trade-off between maximum strain and uniformity, reversibility and device size. We present a compact device that allows the controlled application of uniform in-plane biaxial strain, with maximum deformation and uniformity comparable to those found in much larger devices. Its performance and strain uniformity over the sample area are modeled using finite element analysis and demonstrated by measuring the response of exfoliated 2H-MoS$_2$ to strain by Raman spectroscopy.

Current correlations, Drude weights and large deviations in a box-ball system

We explore several aspects of the current fluctuations and correlations in the box-ball system (BBS), an integrable cellular automaton in one space dimension. The state we consider is an ensemble of microscopic configurations where the box occupancies are independent random variables (i.i.d. state), with a given mean ball density. We compute several quantities exactly in such homogeneous stationary state: the mean value and the variance of the number of balls $N_t$ crossing the origin during time $t$, and the scaled cumulants generating function associated to $N_t$. We also compute two spatially integrated current-current correlations. The first one, involving the long-time limit of the current-current correlations, is the so-called Drude weight and is obtained with thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA). The second one, involving equal time current-current correlations is calculated using a transfer matrix approach. A family of generalized currents, associated to the conserved charges and to the different time evolutions of the models are constructed. The long-time limits of their correlations generalize the Drude weight and the second cumulant of $N_t$ and are found to obey nontrivial symmetry relations. They are computed using TBA and the results are found to be in good agreement with microscopic simulations of the model. TBA is also used to compute explicitly the whole family of flux Jacobian matrices. Finally, some of these results are extended to a (non-i.i.d.) two-temperatures generalized Gibbs state (with one parameter coupled to the total number of balls, and another one coupled to the total number of solitons).

Exact anomalous current fluctuations in a deterministic interacting model

We analytically compute the full counting statistics of charge transfer in a classical automaton of interacting charged particles. Deriving a closed-form expression for the moment generating function with respect to a stationary equilibrium state, we employ asymptotic analysis to infer the structure of charge current fluctuations for a continuous range of timescales. The solution exhibits several unorthodox features. Most prominently, on the timescale of typical fluctuations the probability distribution of the integrated charge current in a stationary ensemble without bias is distinctly non-Gaussian despite diffusive behavior of dynamical charge susceptibility. While inducing a charge imbalance is enough to recover Gaussian fluctuations, we find that higher cumulants grow indefinitely in time with different exponents, implying singular scaled cumulants. We associate this phenomenon with the lack of a regularity condition on moment generating functions and the onset of a dynamical critical point. In effect, the scaled cumulant generating function does not, irrespectively of charge bias, represent a faithful generating function of the scaled cumulants, yet the associated Legendre dual yields the correct large-deviation rate function. Our findings hint at novel types of dynamical universality classes in deterministic many-body systems.

Spin-Ruijsenaars, q-deformed Haldane-Shastry and Macdonald polynomials

We study the $q$-analogue of the Haldane-Shastry model, a partially isotropic (XXZ-like) long-range spin chain that enjoys quantum-affine (really: quantum-loop) symmetries at finite size. We derive the pairwise form of the Hamiltonian, found by one of us building on work of Uglov, via 'freezing' from the affine Hecke algebra. We obtain explicit expressions for the spin-analogue of Macdonald operators. Through freezing these yield the higher Hamiltonians of the spin chain, including a Hamiltonian of the opposite chirality. The sum of the two chiral Hamiltonians has a real spectrum also for $q$ a root of unity. We clarify the relation between patterns labelling the eigenspaces, known as 'motifs', and the corresponding degeneracies in the crystal limit $q\to\infty$. For each motif we obtain an explicit expression for the exact eigenvector, valid for generic $q$, that has ('pseudo' or 'l-') highest weight in the sense that, in terms of the operators from the monodromy matrix, it is an eigenvector of $A$ and $D$ and annihilated by $C$. It has a simple component featuring the 'symmetric square' of the $q$-Vandermonde times a Macdonald polynomial - or more precisely its quantum spherical zonal special case. Its other components are obtained through the action of the Hecke algebra, followed by 'evaluation' of the variables to roots of unity. We prove that our vectors have highest weight upon evaluation. Our description of the spectrum is complete. The model, including the quantum-loop action, can be reformulated in terms of polynomials. Our main tools are the $Y$-operators of the affine Hecke algebra. The key step in our diagonalisation is that on a subspace of suitable polynomials the first $M$ 'classical' (i.e. no difference part) $Y$-operators in $N$ variables reduce, upon evaluation as above, to $Y$-operators in $M$ variables with parameters at the quantum zonal spherical point.

On the Q operator and the spectrum of the XXZ model at root of unity

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain is a paradigmatic quantum integrable model. Although it can be solved exactly via Bethe ansatz techniques, there are still open issues regarding the spectrum at root of unity values of the anisotropy. We construct Baxter's Q operator at arbitrary anisotropy from a two-parameter transfer matrix associated to a complex-spin auxiliary space. A decomposition of this transfer matrix provides a simple proof of the transfer matrix fusion and Wronskian relations. At root of unity a truncation allows us to construct the Q operator explicitly in terms of finite-dimensional matrices. From its decomposition we derive truncated fusion and Wronskian relations as well as an interpolation-type formula that has been conjectured previously. We elucidate the Fabricius-McCoy (FM) strings and exponential degeneracies in the spectrum of the six-vertex transfer matrix at root of unity. Using a semicyclic auxiliary representation we give a conjecture for creation and annihilation operators of FM strings for all roots of unity. We connect our findings with the 'string-charge duality' in the thermodynamic limit, leading to a conjecture for the imaginary part of the FM string centres with potential applications to out-of-equilibrium physics.

Generalized hydrodynamics in complete box-ball system for $U_q(\widehat{sl}_n)$

We introduce the complete box-ball system (cBBS), which is an integrable cellular automaton on 1D lattice associated with the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{sl}_n)$. Compared with the conventional $(n-1)$-color BBS, it enjoys a remarkable simplification that scattering of solitons is totally diagonal. We also submit the cBBS to randomized initial conditions and study its non-equilibrium behavior by thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and generalized hydrodynamics. Excellent agreement is demonstrated between theoretical predictions and numerical simulation on the density plateaux generated from domain wall initial conditions including their diffusive broadening.

Generalized hydrodynamics in box-ball system

Box-ball system (BBS) is a prominent example of integrable cellular automata in one dimension connected to quantum groups, Bethe ansatz, ultradiscretization, tropical geometry and so forth. In this paper we study the generalized Gibbs ensemble of BBS soliton gas by thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and generalized hydrodynamics. The results include the solution to the speed equation for solitons, an intriguing connection of the effective speed with the period matrix of the tropical Riemann theta function, an explicit description of the density plateaux that emerge from domain wall initial conditions including their diffusive corrections.

Quantum spin chains from Onsager algebras and reflection $K$-matrices

We present a representation of the generalized $p$-Onsager algebras $O_p(A^{(1)}_{n-1})$, $O_p(D^{(2)}_{n+1})$, $O_p(B^{(1)}_n)$, $O_p(\tilde{B}^{(1)}_n)$ and $O_p(D^{(1)}_n)$ in which the generators are expressed as local Hamiltonians of XXZ type spin chains with various boundary terms reflecting the Dynkin diagrams. Their symmetry is described by the reflection $K$ matrices which are obtained recently by a $q$-boson matrix product construction related to the 3D integrability and characterized by Onsager coideals of quantum affine algebras. The spectral decomposition of the $K$ matrices with respect to the classical part of the Onsager algebra is described conjecturally. We also include a proof of a certain invariance property of boundary vectors in the $q$-boson Fock space playing a key role in the matrix product construction.

Domain wall problem in the quantum XXZ chain and semiclassical behavior close to the isotropic point

We study the dynamics of a spin-1/2 XXZ chain which is initially prepared in a domain-wall state. We compare the results of time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group simulations with those of an effective description in terms of a classical anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation. Numerous quantities are analyzed: magnetization (x, y and z components), energy density, energy current, but also some spin-spin correlation functions or entanglement entropy in the quantum chain. Without any adjustable parameter a quantitative agreement is observed between the quantum and the LL problems in the long time limit, when the models are close to the isotropic point. This is explained as a consequence of energy conservation. At the isotropic point the mapping between the LL equation and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is used to construct a variational solution capturing several aspects of the problem.

Matrix product solutions to the reflection equation from three dimensional integrability

We formulate a quantized reflection equation in which $q$-boson valued $L$ and $K$ matrices satisfy the reflection equation up to conjugation by a solution to the Isaev-Kulish 3D reflection equation. By forming its $n$-concatenation along the $q$-boson Fock space followed by suitable reductions, we construct families of solutions to the reflection equation in a matrix product form connected to the 3D integrability. They involve the quantum $R$ matrices of the antisymmetric tensor representations of $U_p(A^{(1)}_{n-1})$ and the spin representations of $U_p(B^{(1)}_{n})$, $U_p(D^{(1)}_{n})$ and $U_p(D^{(2)}_{n+1})$.

Finite-size scaling of the Shannon-Rényi entropy in two-dimensional systems with spontaneously broken continuous symmetry

We study the scaling of the (basis dependent) Shannon entropy for two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with Néel long-range order. We use a massless free-field description of the gapless spin wave modes and phase space arguments to treat the fact that the finite-size ground state is rotationally symmetric, while there are degenerate physical ground states which break the symmetry. Our results show that the Shannon entropy (and its Rényi generalizations) possesses some universal logarithmic term proportional to the number $N_\text{NG}$ of Nambu-Goldstone modes. In the case of a torus, we show that $S_{n>1} \simeq {\rm const.} N+ \frac{N_\text{NG}}{4}\frac{n}{n-1} \ln{N}$ and $S_1 \simeq {\rm const.} N - \frac{N_\text{NG}}{4} \ln{N}$, where $N$ is the total number of sites and $n$ the Rényi index. The result for $n>1$ is in reasonable agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo results of Luitz et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 057203 (2014)], and qualitatively similar to those obtained previously for the entanglement entropy. The Shannon entropy of a line subsystem (embedded in the two-dimensional system) is also considered. Finally, we present some density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for a spin$\frac{1}{2}$ XY model on the square lattice in a cylinder geometry. These numerical data confirm our findings for logarithmic terms in the $n=\infty$ Rényi entropy (also called $-\ln{p_{\rm max}}$). They also reveal some universal dependence on the cylinder aspect ratio, in good agreement with the fact that, in that case, $p_{\rm max}$ is related to a non-compact free-boson partition function in dimension 1+1.

Inverse participation ratios in the XXZ spin chain

We investigate numerically the inverse participation ratios in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain, computed in the "Ising" basis (i.e., eigenstates of $σ^z_i$). We consider in particular a quantity $T$, defined by summing the inverse participation ratios of all the eigenstates in the zero magnetization sector of a finite chain of length $N$, with open boundary conditions. From a dynamical point of view, $T$ is proportional to the stationary return probability to an initial basis state, averaged over all the basis states (initial conditions). We find that $T$ exhibits an exponential growth, $T\sim\exp(aN)$, in the gapped phase of the model and a linear scaling, $T\sim N$, in the gapless phase. These two different behaviors are analyzed in terms of the distribution of the participation ratios of individual eigenstates. We also investigate the effect of next-nearest-neighbor interactions, which break the integrability of the model. Although the massive phase of the non-integrable model also has $T\sim\exp(aN)$, in the gapless phase $T$ appears to saturate to a constant value.

Pieri rules, vertex operators and Baxter Q-matrix

We use the Pieri rules to recover the q-boson model and show it is equivalent to a discretized version of the relativistic Toda chain. We identify its semi infinite transfer matrix and the corresponding Baxter Q-matrix with half vertex operators related by an ω-duality transformation. We observe that the scalar product of two higher spin XXZ wave functions can be expressed with a Gaudin determinant.

Bethe Ansatz and Q-operator for the open ASEP

In this paper, we look at the asymmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries with a current-counting deformation. We construct a two-parameter family of transfer matrices which commute with the deformed Markov matrix of the system. We show that these transfer matrices can be factorised into two commuting matrices with one parameter each, which can be identified with Baxter's Q-operator, and that for certain values of the product of those parameters, they decompose into a sum of two commuting matrices, one of which is the Bethe transfer matrix for a given dimension of the auxiliary space. Using this, we find the T-Q equation for the open ASEP, and, through functional Bethe Ansatz techniques, we obtain an exact expression for the dominant eigenvalue of the deformed Markov matrix.
