On soft gluon resummation for associated single top production with a Higgs boson at the LHC

We investigate threshold resummation of soft gluon corrections for the s-channel process of a single top quark production in association with a Higgs boson in the Standard Model. We choose to work in the three-particle invariant mass kinematics in direct QCD, i.e. in the space of Mellin moments. Our results take into account terms of up to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) precision, as well as $\mathcal{O} (α_s)$ non-logarithmic terms which do not vanish at threshold. After presenting analytical expressions we discuss the corresponding numerical results for the total cross section and the invariant mass distributions at the LHC.

Soft-drop grooming for hadronic event shapes

Soft-drop grooming of hadron-collision final states has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of non-perturbative corrections, and in particular the underlying-event contribution. This eventually will enable a more direct comparison of accurate perturbative predictions with experimental measurements. In this study we consider soft-drop groomed dijet event shapes. We derive general results needed to perform the resummation of suitable event-shape variables to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy matched to exact next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD matrix elements. We compile predictions for the transverse-thrust shape accurate to NLO+NLL' using the implementation of the CAESAR formalism in the Sherpa event generator framework. We complement this by state-of-the-art parton- and hadron-level predictions based on NLO QCD matrix elements matched with parton showers. We explore the potential to mitigate non-perturbative corrections for particle-level and track-based measurements of transverse thrust by considering a wide range of soft-drop parameters. We find that soft-drop grooming indeed is very efficient in removing the underlying event. This motivates future experimental measurements to be compared to precise QCD predictions and employed to constrain non-perturbative models in Monte-Carlo simulations.

Jet Angularities in Z+jet production at the LHC

We present a phenomenological study of angularities measured on the highest transverse-momentum jet in LHC events that feature the associate production of a $Z$ boson and one or more jets. In particular, we study angularity distributions that are measured on jets with and without the SoftDrop grooming procedure. We begin our analysis exploiting state-of-the-art Monte Carlo parton shower simulations and we quantitatively assess the impact of next-to-leading order (NLO) matching and merging procedures. We then move to analytic resummation and arrive at an all-order expression that features the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (NLL) and is matched to the exact NLO result. Our predictions include the effect of soft emissions at large angles, treated as a power expansion in the jet radius, and non-global logarithms. Furthermore, matching to fixed-order is performed in such a way to ensure what is usually referred to as NLL$'$ accuracy. Our results account for realistic experimental cuts and can be easily compared to upcoming measurements of jet angularities from the LHC collaborations.

Associated top quark pair production with a heavy boson: differential cross sections at NLO+NNLL accuracy

We present theoretical predictions for selected differential cross sections for the process $pp \to t \bar{t} B$ at the LHC, where $B$ can be a Higgs ($H$), a $Z$ or a $W$ boson. The predictions are calculated in the direct QCD framework up to the next-to-next-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy and matched to the complete NLO results including QCD and electroweak effects. Additionally, results for the total cross sections are provided. The calculations deliver a significant improvement of the theoretical predictions, especially for the $t \bar{t} H$ and the $t \bar{t} Z$ production. In these cases, predictions for both the total and differential cross sections are remarkably stable with respect to the central scale choice and carry a substantially reduced scale uncertainty in comparison with the complete NLO predictions.

Top Precision for Associated Top-Pair Production Processes at the LHC

The studies of the associated production processes of a top-quark pair with a colour-singlet boson, e.g. Higgs, W or Z, are among the highest priorities of the LHC programme. Correspondingly, improvements in precision of theoretical predictions for these processes are of central importance. In this talk, we review our latest results on resummation of soft gluon corrections. The resummation is carried out using the direct QCD Mellin space technique in three-particle invariant mass kinematics. We discuss the impact of the soft gluon corrections on predictions for total cross sections and differential distributions.

Fitting the Strong Coupling Constant with Soft-Drop Thrust

Soft drop has been shown to reduce hadronisation effects at $e^+e^-$ colliders for the thrust event shape. In this context, we perform fits of the strong coupling constant for the soft-drop thrust distribution at NLO+NLL accuracy to pseudo data generated by the \textsf{Sherpa}~event generator. In particular, we focus on the impact of hadronisation corrections, which we estimate both with an analytical model and a Monte-Carlo based one, on the fitted value of $α_s(m_Z)$. We find that grooming can reduce the size of the shift in the fitted value of $α_s$ due to hadronisation. In addition, we also explore the possibility of extending the fitting range down to significantly lower values of (one minus) thrust. Here, soft drop is shown to play a crucial role, allowing us to maintain good fit qualities and stable values of the fitted strong coupling. The results of these studies show that soft-drop thrust is a promising candidate for fitting $α_s$ at $e^+ e^-$ colliders with reduced impact of hadronisation effects.

Soft-Drop Thrust

Soft drop, a technique originally developed in the context of jet physics in proton-proton collisions in order to reduce the contamination from non-perturbative effects, is applied to event shapes in electron-positron annihilation. In particular, we study the thrust distribution at the $Z$ pole and show that the region where non-perturbative corrections due to the hadronisation process are small is considerably extended if soft drop is applied. Therefore, we argue that the use of soft drop to reduce hadronisation effects is potentially of great benefit in the context of strong coupling determination using event shapes, which would be otherwise characterised by a strong correlation between $α_s$ and non-perturbative parameters. However, reduced sensitivity to hadronisation corrections is only one of the aspects that need to be considered. In this context, we show that perturbative calculability, especially away from the soft and collinear region of the event-shape spectrum, has a nontrivial interplay with the soft-drop observable of choice. To this purpose, besides thrust, we investigate the behaviour of the hemisphere mass as well as the jet mass. We find that the latter shows the most promising behaviour in the intermediate region of the spectrum, especially if small jet radii are considered.

Associated production of a top quark pair with a heavy electroweak gauge boson at NLO+NNLL accuracy

We perform threshold resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross sections and the invariant mass distributions for production of a top-antitop quark pair associated with a heavy electroweak boson $V = W^+$, $W^-$ or $Z$ in $pp$ collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. The resummation is carried out at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy using the direct QCD Mellin space technique in the three-particle invariant mass kinematics. It is found that for the $t\bar t Z$ process the soft gluon resummation introduces significant corrections to the next-to-leading order (NLO) results. For the central scale equal to the $t\bar t Z$ invariant mass the corrections reach nearly 30%. For this process, the dominant theoretical uncertainty of the cross section due to the scale choice is significantly reduced at the NLO+NNLL level with respect to the NLO results. The effects of resummation are found to be less pronounced in the $t\bar t W^{\pm}$ case. The obtained results are compared to recent measurements performed by CMS and ATLAS collaborations at the LHC.

Improving predictions for associated $t\bar{t}H$ production at the LHC: soft gluon resummation through NNLL accuracy

In the following we present our recent results on the resummation of soft gluon corrections to the $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section at the LHC. The resummation was carried out at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique. Obtained results were matched to the NLO cross section. We show that the resummation leads to reduction of scale-variation uncertainty of the total $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section.

Associated $t \bar{t} H$ production at the LHC: theoretical predictions at NLO+NNLL accuracy

We perform threshold resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross section and the invariant mass distribution for the process $pp \to t\bar{t}H$. The resummation is carried out at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy using the direct QCD Mellin space technique in the three-particle invariant mass kinematics. After presenting analytical expressions we discuss the impact of resummation on the numerical predictions for the associated Higgs boson production with top quarks at the LHC. We find that NLO+NNLL resummation leads to predictions for which the central values are remarkably stable with respect to scale variation and for which theoretical uncertainties are reduced in comparison to NLO predictions.

Vector boson production in joint resummation

We study the transverse momentum ($Q_T$) distribution of an electro-weak vector boson produced via the Drell-Yan mechanism, in the context of joint resummation. This formalism allows for the simultaneous resummation of logarithmic contributions that are enhanced at small $Q_T$ and at partonic threshold. We extend joint resummation to next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy and we present resummed and matched results for three different phenomenological setups. In particular, we study the production of a $Z$ boson at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as the production of a heavier $Z^\prime$ at the LHC. We compare our findings to standard $Q_T$ resummation, as well as to fixed-order perturbation theory. We find that joint resummation provides a moderate (but not flat) correction with respect to $Q_T$ resummation and it leads to a reduction of the scale dependence of the results. However, our study also shows some limitations of this formalism. While the use of joint resummation for $Z$ production at the Tevatron and $Z^\prime$ production at the LHC appears to be justified, our implementation suffers from a stronger dependence on power corrections for processes which are further away from threshold, such as $Z$ production at the LHC, for which we cannot claim an improvement over standard $Q_T$ resummation.

Soft gluon resummation at fixed invariant mass for associated $t\bar{t}H$ production at the LHC

In the following we present our results on resummation of invariant mass threshold corrections for the $2 \to 3$ type hadronic production processes in the Mellin moment space formalism. This method is applied to the associated Higgs boson production process $pp \to t \bar{t} H$ at the LHC. The results for the total cross section, the differential distribution with respect to the invariant mass and their uncertainties are presented.

Soft gluon resummation for associated $t \bar{t} H$ production at the LHC

We perform resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross section for the process $pp \to t\bar{t}H$. The resummation is carried out at next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique, extending its application to the class of $2 \to 3$ processes. We present an analytical result for the soft anomalous dimension for a hadronic production of two coloured massive particles in association with a colour singlet. We discuss the impact of resummation on the numerical prediction for the associated Higgs boson production with top quarks at the LHC.

NNLL resummation for squark and gluino production at the LHC

We perform the resummation of soft-gluon emissions for squark and gluino production at next- to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We include also the one-loop hard matching coefficients as well as Coulomb corrections to second order, using Mellin-moment methods. We study the characteristics of this resummation in detail for a centre-of-mass (CM) energy of 8 TeV at the LHC, and for squark and gluino masses up to 2.5 TeV. We find significant enhancing effects for all four processes of squark- and gluino-pair production. Scale dependence is generally reduced compared to NLL resummation, except for gluino-pair production where we find a moderate enhancement.

Soft gluon resummation for gluon-induced Higgs Strahlung

We study the effect of soft gluon emission on the total cross section predictions for the $gg\to HZ$ associated Higgs production process at the LHC. To this end, we perform resummation of threshold corrections at the NLL accuracy in the absolute threshold production limit and in the threshold limit for production of a $ZH$ system with a given invariant mass. Analytical results and numerical predictions for various possible LHC collision energies are presented. The perturbative stability of the results is verified by including universal NNLL effects. We find that resummation significantly reduces the scale uncertainty of the $gg\to HZ$ contribution, which is the dominant source of perturbative uncertainty to $ZH$ production. We use our results to evaluate updated numbers for the total inclusive cross section of associated $pp \to ZH$ production at the LHC. The reduced scale uncertainty of the $gg\to HZ$ component translates into a decrease of the overall scale error by about a factor of two.
