Stable Coexistence in Ecologies and Games

We study feasible stable equilibria of Lotka-Volterra systems and their higher-order extensions. We complete the classification of impossible ecological interaction networks with at most four species and extend several of these impossibility results to families with arbitrarily many species. We then show that these sign-pattern obstructions are specific to the pairwise Lotka-Volterra model: arbitrary prescribed growth rates and pairwise coefficients can be supplemented by higher-order interactions so as to admit a feasible asymptotically stable equilibrium. Through the correspondence with replicator dynamics, we interpret feasible equilibria of higher-order Lotka-Volterra systems as totally mixed symmetric Nash equilibria of symmetric multiplayer games, derive bounds on their number, and study their robustness under perturbations of the payoff tensors. We conclude by showing that every impossible ecology determines a nonempty open class of symmetric two-player games with no totally mixed evolutionarily stable strategy.

Secant varieties of flag varieties via Schur apolarity

We develop a general first-order theory of Schur apolarity for the study of secant varieties of flag varieties in arbitrary homogeneous embeddings. Extending the classical apolarity--fat-point correspondence for Veronese varieties, we show that in the Schur setting the algebraic square of the apolar ideal need not coincide with the geometric double-point conditions. We introduce a geometric Schur square whose relevant component is the conormal space, yielding a Schur Dual Terracini Lemma. Our construction recovers classical apolarity in the symmetric case. A slot-by-slot Consistency Theorem realizes these intrinsic conditions as multigraded double points. As an application, we determine the dimensions of all secant varieties of $\operatorname{Fl}(1,2;V_n)$ embedded by $\mathcal{O}(1,1)$: the only defective cases are $σ_2(\operatorname{Fl}(1,2;V_3))$ and $σ_3(\operatorname{Fl}(1,2;V_4))$, both of defect one.

Neural Point-Forms

Point cloud learning often rests on the premise that observed samples are noisy traces of an underlying geometric object, such as a manifold embedded in a high-dimensional feature space. Yet much of this geometry is not captured directly by coordinates, pairwise distances, or learned graph neighborhoods alone. In the smooth setting, differential forms are devices to encode higher order tangency information. In this work, we introduce a new family of principled learnable geometric features for point clouds called neural point-forms (NPFs). In the absence of a natural tangency structure, we instead use Laplacian-based techniques from Diffusion Geometry to build a discrete model for comparing differential forms on point clouds via inner products. In the continuum, submanifolds of a shared ambient feature space are represented as comparison matrices, whose entries describe how pairs of feature forms interact with extrinsic tangency information. We make this intuition precise by proving the long-run consistency of comparison matrices under standard sampling, bandwidth, density, and manifold-hypothesis assumptions. This yields a compact, efficient and permutation-invariant neural layer whose output is a learned form-comparison matrix. Across synthetic and biologically relevant experiments, we show that NPFs provide a competitive, and interpretable representation, with the strongest benefits appearing when labels depend on sampling density, manifold-like structure, or response-relevant population geometry.
