An Integer Linear Programming Model for Earth Observation Missions

This paper addresses an optimization problem in satellite observation mission planning, focusing on the challenges of decentralized decision-making among satellites, which is crucial for optimizing strategies in dynamic observation environments. The method integrates mathematical modeling using integer programming and time-varying communication graphs, which are essential for efficient task scheduling. Specifically, the approach utilizes distributed Lagrangian relaxation techniques to manage the complexity of the problem. Numerical simulations are conducted to explore the feasibility of the proposed approach for handling complex satellite operations under evolving communication dynamics.

All You Need is Group Actions: Advancing Robust Autonomous Planning

Managing the plan of constellation of satellites for target observation requires optimal deployment and efficient operational strategies. In this paper, we introduce a new technique based on group theory tools through multi-agent constraint optimization techniques, designed for the dynamic landscapes of satellite operations. Inspired by group actions, our method models the planning problem for observing Earth targets as a cooperative game to achieve computational efficiency while simultaneously reducing computational complexity. Designed for the complex task of planning constellation of satellites, our methodology provides a feasible solution to the inherent challenges of multi-agent optimization under state constraints and subject to uncertainties. Our approach can offer avenues for improving mission efficiency and reducing costs. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the good performance of the approach in the presence of inter-satellite links.

Control problems on infinite horizon subject to time-dependent pure state constraints

In the last decades, control problems with infinite horizons and discount factors have become increasingly central not only for economics but also for applications in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The strong links between reinforcement learning and control theory have led to major efforts towards the development of algorithms to learn how to solve constrained control problems. In particular, discount plays a role in addressing the challenges that come with models that have unbounded disturbances. Although algorithms have been extensively explored, few results take into account time-dependent state constraints, which are imposed in most real-world control applications. For this purpose, here we investigate feasibility and sufficient conditions for Lipschitz regularity of the value function for a class of discounted infinite horizon optimal control problems subject to time-dependent constraints. We focus on problems with data that allow nonautonomous dynamics, and Lagrangian and state constraints that can be unbounded with possibly nonsmooth boundaries.

Lipschitz regularity of controls and inversion mapping for a class of smooth extremization problems

In the contest of optimal control problems, regularity results for optima are known when addressing fiber-strictly convex Lagrangian. For infinite time horizons, or for settings with infinite dimensional dynamics, the equivalence between minima/maxima and extremals could break down. Commonly, this is due to a loss of convexity/concavity of the cost functional or to a presence of state constraints, in which further controllability assumptions are needed. For many science applications, this a trend is not required, as in energy saving problems. In the present paper, we deal with the set of a functional's extremals subject to end-point restrictions. We consider an affine control system and a cost functional associated to an autonomous Lagrangian. The dynamics is smooth, satisfying the Lie bracket condition, and the functional is assumed merely Fréchet differentiable. Here we provide a regularity result for controls in the context of constrained extremization problems, under weaker conditions on Lagrangian than the not met classical ones. More precisely, we show a characterization for the Lipschitz regularity of controls associated with the extremal trajectories steering two fixed points, assuming the absence of singular controls. As main application, we construct a locally Lipschitz inversion mapping from the ambient space to the set of constrained extremals.

Partial Lipschitz regularity of the minimum time function for sub-Riemannian control systems

In Euclidean space of dimension 2 or 3, we study a minimum time problem associated with a system of real-analytic vector fields satisfying Hörmander's bracket generating condition, where the target is a nonempty closed set. We show that, in dimension 2, the minimum time function is locally Lipschitz continuous while, in dimension 3, it is Lipschitz continuous in the complement of a set of measure zero. In particular, in both cases, the minimum time function is a.e. differentiable on the complement of the target. In dimension 3, in general, there is no hope to have the same regularity result as in dimension 2. Indeed, examples are known where the minimum time function fails to be locally Lipschitz continuous.

Representation of Weak Solutions of Convex Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations on Infinite Horizon

In the present paper, it is provided a representation result for the weak solutions of a class of evolutionary Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations on infinite horizon, with Hamiltonians measurable in time and fiber convex. Such Hamiltonians are associated with a - faithful - representation, namely involving two functions measurable in time and locally Lipschitz in the state and control. Our results concern the recovering of a representation of convex Hamiltonians under a relaxed assumption on the Fenchel transform of the Hamiltonian with respect to the fiber. We apply them to investigate the uniqueness of weak solutions, vanishing at infinity, of a class of time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. Assuming a viability condition on the domain of the aforementioned Fenchel transform, these weak solutions are regarded as an appropriate value function of an infinite horizon control problem under state constraints.

Weak epigraphical solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations on infinite horizon

In this paper we show a uniqueness result for weak epigraphical solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations on infinite horizon for a class of lower semicontinuous functions vanishing at infinity. Weak epigraphical solutions of HJB equations, with time-measurable data and fiber-convex, turn out to be viscosity solutions - in the classical sense - whenever they are locally Lipschitz continuous. Here we extend the notion of locally absolutely continuous tubes to set-valued maps with continuous epigraph of locally bounded variations. This new notion fits with the lack of uniform lower bound of the Fenchel transform of the Hamiltonian with respect to the fiber. Controllability assumptions are considered.

The distance function in the presence of an obstacle

We study the Riemannian distance function from a fixed point (a point-wise target) of Euclidean space in the presence of a compact obstacle bounded by a smooth hypersurface. First, we show that such a function is locally semiconcave with a fractional modulus of order one half and that, near the obstacle, this regularity is optimal. Then, in the Euclidean setting, we prove that the singularities of the distance function propagate, in the sense that each singular point belongs to a nontrivial singular continuum. Finally, we investigate the lack of differentiability of the distance function when a convex obstacle is present.

A two-player game representation for a class of infinite horizon control problems under state constraints

In this paper we give feedback laws for a class of parametrized infinite horizon control problems under state constraints. We provide a two-player representation assuming time dependent dynamics and Lagrangian and the set constraints merely compact. Using viability results recently investigated for infinite horizon settings in presence of state constraints, we extend some known results for the linear-quadratic regulator problem to control problems with nonlinear dynamics in the state and affine in the control. Feedback laws are obtained under suitable controllability assumptions.
