Collective neutrino oscillations with the halo effect in single-angle approximation

We perform a self-consistent calculation of collective neutrino oscillations including the effect of back scattered neutrinos (Halo effect) in the `single-angle' approximation, within a spherically symmetric supernova model. We find that due to the Halo effect the onset of flavor transformations is pushed to smaller radii, by a few kilometers. The celebrated phenomenon of the spectral split is found to be robust under the present inclusion of the Halo effect.

A no-go theorem for non-standard explanations of the $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$ CP asymmetry

The CP asymmetry in $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$, as measured by the BaBar collaboration, differs from the Standard Model prediction by $2.8σ$. Most non-standard interactions do not allow for the required strong phase needed to produce a non-vanishing CP asymmetry, leaving only new tensor interactions as a possible mechanism. We demonstrate that, contrary to previous assumptions in the literature, the crucial interference between vector and tensor phases is suppressed by at least two orders of magnitude due to Watson's final-state-interaction theorem. Furthermore, we find that the strength of the relevant CP-violating tensor interaction is strongly constrained by bounds from the neutron electric dipole moment and $D$-$\bar{D}$ mixing. These observations together imply that it is extremely difficult to explain the current $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$ measurement in terms of physics beyond the Standard Model originating in the ultraviolet.

Effect of collisions on neutrino flavor inhomogeneity in a dense neutrino gas

We investigate the stability, with respect to spatial inhomogeneity, of a two-dimensional dense neutrino gas. The system exhibits growth of seed inhomogeneity due to nonlinear coherent neutrino self-interactions. In the absence of incoherent collisional effects, we observe a dependence of this instability growth rate on the neutrino mass spectrum: the normal neutrino mass hierarchy exhibits spatial instability over a larger range of neutrino number density compared to that of the inverted case. We further consider the effect of elastic incoherent collisions of the neutrinos with a static background of heavy, nucleon-like scatterers. At small scales, the growth of flavor instability can be suppressed by collisions. At large length scales we find, perhaps surprisingly, that for inverted neutrino mass hierarchy incoherent collisions fail to suppress flavor instabilities, independent of the coupling strength.

Axial, Scalar and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from 2+1+1-flavor Lattice QCD

We present results for the isovector axial, scalar and tensor charges $g^{u-d}_A$, $g^{u-d}_S$ and $g^{u-d}_T$ of the nucleon needed to probe the Standard Model and novel physics. The axial charge is a fundamental parameter describing the weak interactions of nucleons. The scalar and tensor charges probe novel interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear $β$-decays, and the flavor-diagonal tensor charges $g^{u}_T$, $g^{d}_T$ and $g^{s}_T$ are needed to quantify the contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The 9 ensembles, generated by the MILC Collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors, span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and 0.12 fm and light-quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 135, 225$ and 315 MeV. High-statistics estimates on five ensembles using the all-mode-averaging method allow us to quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, lattice volume and light-quark masses for the connected contributions. Our final estimates, in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme at 2 GeV, of the isovector charges are $g_A^{u-d} = 1.195(33)(20)$, $g_S^{u-d} = 0.97(12)(6) $ and $g_T^{u-d} = 0.987(51)(20)$. The first error includes statistical and all systematic uncertainties except that due to the extrapolation Ansatz, which is given by the second error estimate. Combining our estimate for $g_S^{u-d}$ with the difference of light quarks masses $(m_d-m_u)^{\rm QCD}=2.67(35)$ MeV given by FLAG, we obtain $(M_N-M_P)^{\rm QCD} = 2.59(49)$ MeV. Estimates of the connected part of the flavor-diagonal tensor charges of the proton are $g^{u}_T=0.792(42)$ and $g^{d}_T=-0.194(14)$. Combining our new estimates with precision low-energy experiments, we update constraints on novel scalar and tensor interactions, $ε_{S,T}$, at the TeV scale.

Quark Chromoelectric Dipole Moment Contribution to the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment

The quark chromo-electric dipole moment operator and the pseudo-scalar fermion bilinear with which it mixes under renormalization can both be included in a calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the nucleon using the Schwinger source method. A preliminary calculation of these operators using clover quarks on HISQ lattices generated by MILC collaboration will be presented showing the quality of the signal in the correlators necessary for calculating the neutron electric dipole moment.

Neutrino flavor transformation in the lepton-asymmetric universe

We investigate neutrino flavor transformation in the early universe in the presence of a lepton asymmetry, focusing on a two-flavor system with 1 - 3 mixing parameters. We identify five distinct regimes that emerge in an approximate treatment neglecting collisions as the initial lepton asymmetry at high temperature is varied from values comparable to current constraints on the lepton number down to values at which the neutrino-neutrino forward-scattering potential is negligible. The characteristic phenomena occurring in these regimes are (1) large synchronized oscillations, (2) minimal flavor transformation, (3) asymmetric (neutrino- or antineutrino-only) MSW, (4) partial MSW, and (5) symmetric MSW. We examine our numerical results in the framework of adiabaticity, and we illustrate how they are modified by collisional damping. Finally, we point out the existence of matter-neutrino resonances in the early universe and show that they suffer from non-adiabaticity.

Neutrino Quantum Kinetic Equations: The Collision Term

We derive the collision term relevant for neutrino quantum kinetic equations in the early universe and compact astrophysical objects, displaying its full matrix structure in both flavor and spin degrees of freedom. We include in our analysis neutrino-neutrino processes, scattering and annihilation with electrons and positrons, and neutrino scattering off nucleons (the latter in the low-density limit). After presenting the general structure of the collision terms, we take two instructive limiting cases. The one-flavor limit highlights the structure in helicity space and allows for a straightforward interpretation of the off-diagonal entries in terms of the product of scattering amplitudes of the two helicity states. The isotropic limit is relevant for studies of the early universe: in this case the terms involving spin coherence vanish and the collision term can be expressed in terms of two-dimensional integrals, suitable for computational implementation.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment from quark Chromoelectric Dipole Moment

The connection between a regularization-independent symmetric momentum substraction (RI-$\tilde{\rm S}$MOM) and the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme for the quark chromo EDM operators is discussed. A method for evaluating the neutron EDM from quark chromoEDM is described. A preliminary study of the signal in the matrix element using clover quarks on a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensemble is shown.

Nucleon Charges, Form-factors and Neutron EDM

We present an update of our analysis of statistical and systematic errors in the calculation of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges of the nucleon. The calculations are done using $N_f=2+1+1$ flavor HISQ ensembles generated by the MILC Collaboration at three values of the lattice spacing ($a=0.12,\ 0.09,$ and $0.06$ fm) and three values of the quark mass ($M_π\approx 310,\ 220$ and $130$ MeV); and clover fermions for calculating the correlation functions, i.e., we use a clover-on-HISQ lattice formulation. The all-mode-averaging method allows us to increase the statistics by a factor of eight for the same computational cost leading to a better understanding of and control over excited state contamination. Our current results, after extrapolation to the continuum limit and physical pion mass are $g_A^{u-d} = 1.21(3)$, $g_T^{u-d} = 1.005(59)$ and $g_S^{u-d} = 0.95(12) $. Further checks of control over all systematic errors, especially in $g_A^{u-d}$, are still being performed. Using results for the flavor-diagonal charges, $g_T^{u} $, $g_T^{d} $ and $g_T^{s}$, we analyze contributions of the quark electric dipole moment to the neutron EDM and the consequences for split SUSY model.

Iso-vector and Iso-scalar Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

We present results for the iso-vector and flavor diagonal tensor charges $g^{u-d}_T$, $g^{u}_T$, $g^{d}_T$, and $g^{s}_T$ needed to probe novel tensor interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear $β$-decays and the contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The lattice QCD calculations were done using nine ensembles of gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors. These ensembles span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and $0.12 $ fm and three quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 130, 220$ and $310 $ MeV. Using estimates from these ensembles, we quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume and light quark masses for the connected contributions. The final estimates of the connected nucleon (proton) tensor charge for the iso-vector combination is $g_T^{u-d} = 1.020(76) $ in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme at $2$ GeV. The additional disconnected quark loop contributions needed for the flavor-diagonal matrix elements are calculated using a stochastic estimator employing the truncated solver method with the all-mode-averaging technique. We find that the size of the disconnected contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the connected contribution. This allows us to bound the disconnected contribution and include it as an additional uncertainty in the flavor-diagonal charges. After a continuum extrapolation, we find $g_T^{u} = 0.774(66) $, $g_T^{d} = -0.233(28) $ and $g_T^{u+d} = 0.541(67) $. The strangeness tensor charge, that can make a significant contribution to the neutron EDM due to the large ratio $m_s/m_{u,d}$, is $g_T^{s}=0.008(9)$ in the continuum limit.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment and Tensor Charges from Lattice QCD

We present Lattice QCD results on the neutron tensor charges including, for the first time, a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume, and light quark masses to the physical point in the continuum limit. We find that the "disconnected" contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the "connected" contribution. Our estimates in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme at $2$ GeV, including all systematics, are $g_T^{d-u}=1.020(76)$, $g_T^d = 0.774(66)$, $g_T^u = - 0.233(28)$, and $g_T^s = 0.008(9)$. The flavor diagonal charges determine the size of the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) induced by quark EDMs that are generated in many new scenarios of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model (BSM). We use our results to derive model-independent bounds on the EDMs of light quarks and update the EDM phenomenology in split Supersymmetry with gaugino mass unification, finding a stringent upper bound of $d_n < 4 \times 10^{-28} \, e$ cm for the neutron EDM in this scenario.

A New Spin on Neutrino Quantum Kinetics

Recent studies have demonstrated that in anisotropic environments a coherent spin-flip term arises in the Quantum Kinetic Equations (QKEs) which govern the evolution of neutrino flavor and spin in hot and dense media. This term can mediate neutrino-antineutrino transformation for Majorana neutrinos and active-sterile transformation for Dirac neutrinos. We discuss the physical origin of the coherent spin-flip term and provide explicit expressions for the QKEs in a two-flavor model with spherical geometry. In this context, we demonstrate that coherent neutrino spin transformation depends on the absolute neutrino mass and Majorana phases.

Disentangling new physics contributions in lepton flavour violating tau decays

The possibility to discriminate between different operators contributing to lepton flavour violating tau decays is discussed within an effective field theory framework. Correlations among decay rates in different channels as well as differential distributions in many-body decays are considered. Recent developments in the determination of the hadronic form factors for $τ\rightarrow \ell ππ$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are incorporated in the analysis. The above issues are exemplified by considering a Higgs-like boson with lepton flavour violating couplings. Implications of the search for lepton flavour violating Higgs decays performed recently by the CMS collaboration are also discussed.

Prospects for Neutrino-Antineutrino Transformation in Astrophysical Environments

We examine whether the newly derived neutrino spin coherence could lead to large-scale coherent neutrino-antineutrino conversion. In a linear analysis we find that such transformation is largely suppressed, but demonstrate that nonlinear feedback can enhance it. We point out that conditions which favor this feedback may exist in core collapse supernovae and in binary neutron star mergers.

Neutrino Quantum Kinetics

We present a formulation of the quantum kinetic equations (QKEs) which govern the evolution of neutrino flavor at high density and temperature. Here, the QKEs are derived from the ground up, using fundamental neutrino interactions and quantum field theory. We show that the resulting QKEs describe coherent flavor evolution with an effective mass when inelastic scattering is negligible. The QKEs also contain a collision term. This term can reduce to the collision term in the Boltzmann equation when scattering is dominant and the neutrino effective masses and density matrices become diagonal in the interaction basis. We also find that the QKE's include equations of motion for a new dynamical quantity related to neutrino spin. This quantity decouples from the equations of motion for the density matrices at low densities or in isotropic conditions. However, the spin equations of motion allow for the possibility of coherent transformation between neutrinos and antineutrinos at high densities and in the presence of anisotropy. Although the requisite conditions for this exist in the core collapse supernova and compact object merger environments, it is likely that only a self consistent incorporation of the QKEs in a sufficiently realistic model could establish whether or not significant neutrino-antineutrino conversion occurs.

The model-discriminating power of lepton flavor violating tau decays

Within an effective field theory framework, we discuss the possibility to discriminate among different operators that contribute to lepton flavor violating (LFV) tau decays. Correlations among decay rates in different channels are shown to provide a basic handle to unravel the origin of LFV in these processes. More information about the underlying dynamics responsible for LFV can be gathered from differential distributions in three-body decays like tau -> mu pi pi or tau -> 3 mu: these are considered in some detail. We incorporate in our analysis recent developments in the determination of the hadronic form factors for tau -> mu pi pi. Future prospects for the observation of LFV tau decays and its interpretation are also discussed.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moments from Beyond the Standard Model Physics

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM), a generic feature of CP-violation, is predicted to be very small in the Standard Model, but can be much larger in most extensions of the model. In this talk, I will discuss the classification of the CP violating operators up to dimension 6 that can give rise to nEDM, and then describe the mixing and renormalization structure of the operators of dimension 5 and lower in both dimensional and cutoff regularizations in general terms. Finally I will describe how to connect the dimension 5 operators, in particular, the Chromoelectric Dipole Moment of the quarks, between MSbar scheme and a Regularization Independent prescription in the chiral limit.
