Refining Castelnuovo-Halphen bounds

Fix integers $r,d,s,π$ with $r\geq 4$, $d\gg s$, $r-1\leq s \leq 2r-4$, and $π\geq 0$. Refining classical results for the genus of a projective curve, we exhibit a sharp upper bound for the arithmetic genus $p_a(C)$ of an integral projective curve $C\subset {\mathbb{P}^r}$ of degree $d$, assuming that $C$ is not contained in any surface of degree $ π$. Next we discuss other types of bound for $p_a(C)$, involving conditions on the entire Hilbert polynomial of the integral surfaces on which $C$ may lie.

A Griffiths' Theorem for varieties with isolated singularities

By the fundamental work of Griffiths one knows that, under suitable assumption, homological and algebraic equivalence do not coincide for a general hypersurface section of a smooth projective variety $Y$. In the present paper we prove the same result in case $Y$ has isolated singularities.

Plucker-Clebsch formula in higher dimension

Let $S\subset\Ps^r$ ($r\geq 5$) be a nondegenerate, irreducible, smooth, complex, projective surface of degree $d$. Let $δ_S$ be the number of double points of a general projection of $S$ to $\Ps^4$. In the present paper we prove that $ δ_S\leq{\binom {d-2} {2}}$, with equality if and only if $S$ is a rational scroll. Extensions to higher dimensions are discussed.

Noether-Lefschetz Theory and Néron-Severi Group

Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of a smooth complex projective complete intersection variety $Y\subseteq \Ps^N$, with $dim Y=2r+1\geq 3$. We describe the Néron-Severi group $NS_r(X)$ of a general smooth hypersurface $X\subset Y$ of sufficiently large degree containing $Z$.

Monodromy of a family of hypersurfaces

Let $Y$ be an $(m+1)$-dimensional irreducible smooth complex projective variety embedded in a projective space. Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of $Y$, and $δ$ be a positive integer such that $\mathcal I_{Z,Y}(δ)$ is generated by global sections. Fix an integer $d\geq δ+1$, and assume the general divisor $X \in |H^0(Y,\ic_{Z,Y}(d))|$ is smooth. Denote by $H^m(X;\mathbb Q)_{\perp Z}^{\text{van}}$ the quotient of $H^m(X;\mathbb Q)$ by the cohomology of $Y$ and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of dimension $m$ of $Z$. In the present paper we prove that the monodromy representation on $H^m(X;\mathbb Q)_{\perp Z}^{\text{van}}$ for the family of smooth divisors $X \in |H^0(Y,\ic_{Z,Y}(d))|$ is irreducible.

Hierarchical structure of the family of curves with maximal genus verifying flag conditions

Fix integers $r,s_1,...,s_l$ such that $1\leq l\leq r-1$ and $s_l\geq r-l+1$, and let $\Cal C(r;s_1,...,s_l)$ be the set of all integral, projective and nondegenerate curves $C$ of degree $s_1$ in the projective space $\bold P^r$, such that, for all $i=2,...,l$, $C$ does not lie on any integral, projective and nondegenerate variety of dimension $i$ and degree $ >...>>s_l$, we prove that a curve $C$ satisfying the flag condition $(r;s_1,...,s_l)$ and of maximal arithmetic genus $p_a(C)=G(r;s_1,...,s_l)$ must lie on a unique flag such as $C=V_{s_1}^{1}\subset V_{s_2}^{2}\subset ... \subset V_{s_l}^{l}\subset {\bold P^r}$, where, for any $i=1,...,l$, $V_{s_i}^i$ denotes an integral projective subvariety of ${\bold P^r}$ of degree $s_i$ and dimension $i$, such that its general linear curve section satisfies the flag condition $(r-i+1;s_i,...,s_l)$ and has maximal arithmetic genus $G(r-i+1;s_i,...,s_l)$. This proves the existence of a sort of a hierarchical structure of the family of curves with maximal genus verifying flag conditions.

Factoriality and Neron-Severi groups of a projective codimension two complete intersection with isolated singularities

For a projective variety $Z$ and for any integer $p$, define the $p$-th Néron-Severi group $NS_p(Z)$ of $Z$ as the image of the cycle map $A_{p}(Z)\to H_{2p}(Z; \mathbb{C})$. Now let $X\subset \Ps^{2m+1}$ ($m\geq 1$) be a projective variety of dimension $2m-1$, with isolated singularities, complete intersection of a smooth hypersurface of degree $k$, with a hypersurface of degree $n>max\{k, 2m+1\}$, and let $F$ be a general hypersurface of degree $n$ containing $X$. We prove that the natural map $NS_m(X)\to NS_m(F)$ is surjective, and that if $dim NS_m(F)=1$ then $dim NS_m(X)=1$. In particular $dim NS_m(X)=1$ if and only if $dim NS_m(F)=1$. When $X$ is a threefold (i.e. $m=2$) we deduce a new characterization for the factoriality of $X$, i.e. that $X$ is factorial if and only if $dim NS_2(F)=1$. This allows us to give examples of factorial threefolds, in some case with many singularities. During the proof of the announced results, we show that the quotient of the middle cohomology of $F$ by the cycle classes coming from $X$ is irreducible under the monodromy action induced by the hypersurfaces of degree $n$ containing $X$. As consequences we deduce a Noether-Lefschetz Theorem for a projective complete intersection with isolated singularities, and, also using a recent result on codimension two Hodge conjecture, in the case $X\subset \Ps^{5}$ is a threefold as before, we deduce that the general hypersurface $F$ of degree $n$ containing $X$ verifies Hodge conjecture.

A speciality theorem for curves in $\bold P^5$

Let $C\subset \bold P^r$ be an integral projective curve. One defines the speciality index $e(C)$ of $C$ as the maximal integer $t$ such that $h^0(C,ω_C(-t))>0$, where $ω_C$ denotes the dualizing sheaf of $C$. Extending a classical result of Halphen concerning the speciality of a space curve, in the present paper we prove that if $C\subset \bold P^5$ is an integral degree $d$ curve not contained in any surface of degree $< s$, in any threefold of degree $ >s>>t>>u\geq 1$, then $ e(C)\leq {\frac{d}{s}}+{\frac{s}{t}}+{\frac{t}{u}}+u-6. $ Moreover equality holds if and only if $C$ is a complete intersection of hypersurfaces of degrees $u$, ${\frac{t}{u}}$, ${\frac{s}{t}}$ and ${\frac{d}{s}}$. We give also some partial results in the general case $C\subset \bold P^r$, $r\geq 3$.

Canonical map of low codimensional subvarieties

Fix integers $a\geq 1$, $b$ and $c$. We prove that for certain projective varieties $V\subset{\bold P}^r$ (e.g. certain possibly singular complete intersections), there are only finitely many components of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing irreducible, smooth, projective, low codimensional subvarieties $X$ of $V$ such that $$ h^0(X,\Cal O_X(aK_X-bH_X)) \leq λd^{ε_1}+c(\sum_{1\leq h < ε_2}p_g(X^{(h)})), $$ where $d$, $K_X$ and $H_X$ denote the degree, the canonical divisor and the general hyperplane section of $X$, $p_g(X^{(h)})$ denotes the geometric genus of the general linear section of $X$ of dimension $h$, and where $λ$, $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ are suitable positive real numbers depending only on the dimension of $X$, on $a$ and on the ambient variety $V$. In particular, except for finitely many families of varieties, the canonical map of any irreducible, smooth, projective, low codimensional subvariety $X$ of $V$, is birational.
