Two principles in many-valued logic

Classically, two propositions are logically equivalent precisely when they are true under the same logical valuations. Also, two logical valuations are distinct if, and only if, there is a formula that is true according to one valuation, and false according to the other. By a real-valued logic we mean a many-valued logic in the sense of Petr Hájek that is complete with respect to a subalgebra of truth values of a BL-algebra given by a continuous triangular norm on [0, 1]. Abstracting the two foregoing properties from classical logic leads us to two principles that a real-valued logic may or may not satisfy. We prove that the two principles are sufficient to characterise Łukasiewicz and Gödel logic, to within extensions. We also prove that, under the additional assumption that the set of truth values be closed in the Euclidean topology of [0,1], the two principles also afford a characterisation of Product logic.

Unital hyperarchimedean vector lattices

We prove that the category of unital hyperarchimedean vector lattices is equivalent to the category of Boolean algebras. The key result needed to establish the equivalence is that, via the Yosida representation, such a vector lattice is naturally isomorphic to the vector lattice of all locally constant real-valued continuous functions on a Boolean (=compact Hausdorff totally disconnected) space. We give two applications of our main result.

The Chinese Remainder Theorem for strongly semisimple MV-algebras and lattice-groups

An MV-algebra (equivalently, a lattice-ordered Abelian group with a distinguished order unit) is strongly semisimple if all of its quotients modulo finitely generated congruences are semisimple. All MV-algebras satisfy a Chinese Reminder Theorem, as was first shown by Keimel four decades ago in the context of lattice-groups. In this note we prove that the Chinese Remainder Theorem admits a considerable strengthening for strongly semisimple structures.

The problem of artificial precision in theories of vagueness: a note on the role of maximal consistency

The problem of artificial precision is a major objection to any theory of vagueness based on real numbers as degrees of truth. Suppose you are willing to admit that, under sufficiently specified circumstances, a predication of "is red" receives a unique, exact number from the real unit interval [0,1]. You should then be committed to explain what is it that determines that value, settling for instance that my coat is red to degree 0.322 rather than 0.321. In this note I revisit the problem in the important case of Łukasiewicz infinite-valued propositional logic that brings to the foreground the role of maximally consistent theories. I argue that the problem of artificial precision, as commonly conceived of in the literature, actually conflates two distinct problems of a very different nature.

MV-algebras freely generated by finite Kleene algebras

If V and W are varieties of algebras such that any V-algebra A has a reduct U(A) in W, there is a forgetful functor U: V->W that acts by A |-> U(A) on objects, and identically on homomorphisms. This functor U always has a left adjoint F: W->V by general considerations. One calls F(B) the V-algebra freely generated by the W-algebra B. Two problems arise naturally in this broad setting. The description problem is to describe the structure of the V-algebra F(B) as explicitly as possible in terms of the structure of the W-algebra B. The recognition problem is to find conditions on the structure of a given V-algebra A that are necessary and sufficient for the existence of a W-algebra B such that F(B) is isomorphic to A. Building on and extending previous work on MV-algebras freely generated by finite distributive lattices, in this paper we provide solutions to the description and recognition problems in case V is the variety of MV-algebras, W is the variety of Kleene algebras, and B is finitely generated--equivalently, finite. The proofs rely heavily on the Davey-Werner natural duality for Kleene algebras, on the representation of finitely presented MV-algebras by compact rational polyhedra, and on the theory of bases of MV-algebras.

Idempotent generated algebras and Boolean powers of commutative rings

A Boolean power S of a commutative ring R has the structure of a commutative R-algebra, and with respect to this structure, each element of S can be written uniquely as an R-linear combination of orthogonal idempotents so that the sum of the idempotents is 1 and their coefficients are distinct. In order to formalize this decomposition property, we introduce the concept of a Specker R-algebra, and we prove that the Boolean powers of R are up to isomorphism precisely the Specker R-algebras. We also show that these algebras are characterized in terms of a functorial construction having roots in the work of Bergman and Rota. When R is indecomposable, we prove that S is a Specker R-algebra iff S is a projective R-module, thus strengthening a theorem of Bergman, and when R is a domain, we show that S is a Specker R-algebra iff S is a torsion-free R-module. For an indecomposable R, we prove that the category of Specker R-algebras is equivalent to the category of Boolean algebras, and hence is dually equivalent to the category of Stone spaces. In addition, when R is a domain, we show that the category of Baer Specker R-algebras is equivalent to the category of complete Boolean algebras, and hence is dually equivalent to the category of extremally disconnected compact Hausdorff spaces. For a totally ordered R, we prove that there is a unique partial order on a Specker R-algebra S for which it is an f-algebra over R, and show that S is equivalent to the R-algebra of piecewise constant continuous functions from a Stone space X to R equipped with the interval topology.

The logical content of triangular bases of fuzzy sets in Łukasiewicz infinite-valued logic

Continuing to pursue a research direction that we already explored in connection with Gödel-Dummett logic and Ruspini partitions, we show here that Łukasiewicz logic is able to express the notion of pseudo-triangular basis of fuzzy sets, a mild weakening of the standard notion of triangular basis. En route to our main result we obtain an elementary, logic-independent characterisation of triangular bases of fuzzy sets.
