Evaluation codes arising from symmetric polynomials

Datta and Johnsen (Des. Codes and Cryptogr., {\bf{91}} (2023), 747-761) introduced a new family of evalutation codes in an affine space of dimension $\ge 2$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ where linear combinations of elementary symmetric polynomials are evaluated on the set of all points with pairwise distinct coordinates. In this paper, we propose a generalization by taking low dimensional linear systems of symmetric polynomials. Computation for small values of $q=7,9$ shows that carefully chosen generalized Datta-Johnsen codes $\left[\frac{1}{2}q(q-1),3,d\right]$ have minimum distance $d$ equal to the optimal value minus 1.

Codes from $A_m$-invariant polynomials

Let $q$ be a prime power. This paper provides a new class of linear codes that arises from the action of the alternating group on $\mathbb F_q[x_1,\dots,x_m]$ combined with the ideas in (M. Datta and T. Johnsen, 2022). Compared with Generalized Reed-Muller codes with similar parameters, our codes have the same asymptotic relative distance but a better rate. Our results follow from combinations of Galois theoretical methods with Weil-type bounds for the number of points of hypersurfaces over finite fields.

An approach to normal polynomials through symmetrization and symmetric reduction

An irreducible polynomial $f\in\Bbb F_q[X]$ of degree $n$ is {\em normal} over $\Bbb F_q$ if and only if its roots $r, r^q,\dots,r^{q^{n-1}}$ satisfy the condition $Δ_n(r, r^q,\dots,r^{q^{n-1}})\ne 0$, where $Δ_n(X_0,\dots,X_{n-1})$ is the $n\times n$ circulant determinant. By finding a suitable {\em symmetrization} of $Δ_n$ (A multiple of $Δ_n$ which is symmetric in $X_0,\dots,X_{n-1}$), we obtain a condition on the coefficients of $f$ that is sufficient for $f$ to be normal. This approach works well for $n\le 5$ but encounters computational difficulties when $n\ge 6$. In the present paper, we consider irreducible polynomials of the form $f=X^n+X^{n-1}+a\in\Bbb F_q[X]$. For $n=6$ and $7$, by an indirect method, we are able to find simple conditions on $a$ that are sufficient for $f$ to be normal. In a more general context, we also explore the normal polynomials of a finite Galois extension through the irreducible characters of the Galois group.

On permutation quadrinomials from Niho exponents in characteristic two

In a recent paper Zheng et al. characterized the coefficients of $ f(x) = x + a_1x^{s_1(2m-1)+1} + a_2x^{s_2(2m-1)+1} + a_3x^{s_3(2m-1)+1} $ over $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ that lead $ f(x) $ to be a permutation of $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ for $ (s_1, s_2, s_3) = (\frac{1}{4},1, \frac{3}{4})$. They left open the question whether those conditions were also necessary. In this paper we give a positive answer to that question.

Optimal locally recoverable codes with hierarchy from nested $F$-adic expansions

In this paper we construct new optimal hierarchical locally recoverable codes. Our construction is based on a combination of the ideas of \cite{ballentine2019codes,sasidharan2015codes} with an algebraic number theoretical approach that allows to give a finer tuning of the minimum distance of the intermediate code (allowing larger dimension of the final code), and to remove restrictions on the arithmetic properties of $q$ compared with the size of the locality sets in the hierarchy. In turn, we manage to obtain codes with a wide set of parameters both for the size $q$ of the base field, and for the hierarchy size, while keeping the optimality of the codes we construct.

A General Construction of Permutation Polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$

Let $r$ be a positive integer, $h(X)\in\Bbb F_{q^2}[X]$, and $μ_{q+1}$ be the subgroup of order $q+1$ of $\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. It is well known that $X^rh(X^{q-1})$ permutes $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ if and only if $\text{gcd}(r,q-1)=1$ and $X^rh(X)^{q-1}$ permutes $μ_{q+1}$. There are many ad hoc constructions of permutation polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ of this type such that $h(X)^{q-1}$ induces monomial functions on the cosets of a subgroup of $μ_{q+1}$. We give a general construction that can generate, through an algorithm, {\em all} permutation polynomials of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ with this property, including many which are not known previously. The construction is illustrated explicitly for permutation binomials and trinomials.

External points to a conic from a Baer subplane

For an irreducible conic $\mathcal C$ in a Desarguesian plane of odd square order, estimating the number of points from a Baer subplane which are external to $\mathcal C$ is a natural problem. In this paper, a complete list of possibilities is determined for the case where $\mathcal C$ shares at least one point with the subplane.

New Results on Permutation Binomials of Finite Fields

After a brief review of existing results on permutation binomials of finite fields, we introduce the notion of equivalence among permutation binomials (PBs) and describe how to bring a PB to its canonical form under equivalence. We then focus on PBs of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ of the form $X^n(X^{d(q-1)}+a)$, where $n$ and $d$ are positive integers and $a\in\Bbb F_{q^2}^*$. Our contributions include two nonexistence results: (1) If $q$ is even and sufficiently large and $a^{q+1}\ne 1$, then $X^n(X^{3(q-1)}+a)$ is not a PB of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$. (2) If $2\le d\mid q+1$, $q$ is sufficiently large and $a^{q+1}\ne 1$, then $X^n(X^{d(q-1)}+a)$ is not a PB of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ under certain additional conditions. (1) partially confirms a recent conjecture by Tu et al. (2) is an extension of a previous result with $n=1$.

New families of permutation trinomials constructed by permutations of $μ_{q+1}$

Permutation polynomials are of particular significance in several areas of applied mathematics, such as Coding theory and Cryptography. Many recent constructions are based on the Akbary-Ghioca-Wang (AGW) criterion. Along this line of research, we provide new classes of permutation trinomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of the form $f(x)=x^r h(x^{q-1})$, by studying permutations of the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity, which look like monomials on the sets of suitable partitions.

New hemisystems of the Hermitian surface

Finding Hemisystems is a challenging problem and just few examples arising from the Hermitian surface are known. A recent method to obtain Hemisystems is based on using maximal curves. Along this side of research, we provide new examples of Hemisystems in $PG(3,p^2)$, for each prime of the form $p=1+4a^2$, with $ a $ integer. Last, we use these results to obtain two weight linear codes and strongly regular graphs.
