Asymptotic analysis for the Stefan problem with a doubly nonlinear phase relaxation

In this paper we consider the Stefan problem endowed with a doubly nonlinear phase relaxation. More precisely we assume that the rate of convergence of the phase function depends on the temperature via an increasing continuous function, and it depends on the phase via a maximal antimonotone graph. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of the relaxed problem, and we perform the asymptotic analysis toward the Stefan problem as the relaxation parameter approaches zero.

Excess-continuous prox-regular sweeping processes

In this paper we consider the Moreau's sweeping processes driven by a time dependent prox-regular set $C(t)$ which is continuous in time with respect to the asymmetric distance $e$ called the excess, defined by $e(A,B) := \sup_{x \in A} d(x,B)$ for every pair of sets $A$, $B$ in a Hilbert space. As observed by J.J. Moreau in his pioneering works, the excess provides the natural topological framework for sweeping process. Assuming a uniform interior cone condition for $C(t)$, we prove that the associated sweeping process has a unique solution, thereby improving the existing result on continuous prox-regular sweeping processes in two directions: indeed, in the previous literature $C(t)$ was supposed to be continuous in time with respect to the symmetric Hausdorff distance instead of the excess and also its boundary $\partial C(t)$ was required to be continuous in time, an assumption which we completely drop. Therefore our result allows to consider a much wider class of continuously moving constraints.

Prox-regular sweeping processes with bounded retraction

The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand we prove that the Moreau's sweeping process driven by a uniformly prox-regular moving set with local bounded retraction has a unique solution provided that the coefficient of prox-regularity is larger than the size of any jump of the driving set. On the other hand we show how the case of local bounded retraction can be easily reduced to the $1$-Lipschitz continuous case: indeed we first solve the Lipschitz continuous case by means of the so called ``catching-up algorithm", and we reduce the local bounded retraction case to the Lipschitz one by using a reparametrization technique for functions with values in the family of prox-regular sets.

A Convergence result for a Stefan problem with phase relaxation

In this paper we consider the model of phase relaxation introduced in [22], where an asymptotic analysis is performed toward an integral formulation of the Stefan problem when the relaxation parameter approaches zero. Assuming the natural physical assumption that the initial condition of the phase is constrained, but taking more general boundary conditions, we prove that the solution of this relaxed model converges in a stronger way to the solution of the classical weak Stefan problem.

Quaternionic resolvent equation and series expansion of the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent operator

In the present paper, we prove a resolvent equation for the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent operator in the quaternionic framework. Exploiting this resolvent equation, we find a series expansion for the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent operator in an open neighborhood of any given quaternion belonging to the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent set. Some consequences of the series expansion are deduced. In particular, we describe a property of the geometry of the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent set in terms of the Cassini pseudo-metric on quaternions. The concept of vector-valued real analytic function of several variables plays a crucial role in the proof of the mentioned series expansion for the $\mathcal{S}$-resolvent operator.

Continuity of the non-convex play operator in the space of rectifiable curves

In this paper we prove that the vector play operator with a uniformly prox-regular characteristic set of constraints is continuous with respect to the BV-norm and to the BV-strict metric in the space of continuous functions of bounded variation. We do not assume any further regularity of the characteristic set. We also prove that the non-convex play operator is rate independent.

Explicit and implicit non-convex sweeping processes in the space of absolutely continuous functions

We show that sweeping processes with possibly non-convex prox-regular constraints generate a strongly continuous input-output mapping in the space of absolutely continuous functions. Under additional smoothness assumptions on the constraint we prove the local Lipschitz continuity of the input-output mapping. Using the Banach contraction principle, we subsequently prove that also the solution mapping associated with the state-dependent problem is locally Lipschitz continuous.

On the generators of Clifford semigroups: polynomial resolvents and their integral transforms

This paper deals with generators $\mathsf{A}$ of strongly continuous right linear semigroups in Banach two-sided spaces whose set of scalars is an arbitrary Clifford algebra $\mathit{C}\ell(0,n)$. We study the invertibility of operators of the form $P(\mathsf{A})$, where $P(x)\in\mathbb{R}[x]$ is any real polynomial, and we give an integral representation for $P(\mathsf{A})^{-1}$ by means of a Laplace-type transform of the semigroup $\mathsf{T}(t)$ generated by $\mathsf{A}$. In particular, we deduce a new integral representation for the operator $(\mathsf{A}^2 - 2\mathrm{Re}(q) \,\mathsf{A} + |q|^2)^{-1}$. As an immediate consequence, we also obtain a new proof of the well-known integral representation for the $S$-resolvent operator of $\mathsf{A}$ (also called spherical resolvent operator of $\mathsf{A}$).

Non-convex sweeping processes in the space of regulated functions

The aim of this paper is to study a wide class of non-convex sweeping processes with moving constraint whose translation and deformation are represented by regulated functions, i.e., functions of not necessarily bounded variation admitting one-sided limits at every point. Assuming that the time-dependent constraint is uniformly prox-regular and has uniformly non-empty interior, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, as well as continuous data dependence with respect to the sup-norm.

Convex valued geodesics and applications to sweeping processes with bounded retraction

In this paper we provide a formulation for sweeping processes with arbitrary locally bounded retraction, not necessarily left or right continuous. Moreover we provide a proof of the existence and uniqueness of solutions for this formulation which relies on the reduction to the $1$-Lipschitz continuous case by using a suitable family of geodesics for the asymmetric Hausdorff-like distance called "excess".

Multidimensional play operators with arbitrary BV inputs

In this paper we provide an integral variational formulation for a vector play operator where the inputs are allowed to be arbitrary functions with (pointwise) bounded variation, not necessarily left or right continuous. We prove that this problem admits a unique solution, and we show that in the left continuous and right continuous cases it reduces to the well known existing formulations.

Sweeping processes with prescribed behaviour on jumps

We present a generalized formulation of sweeping process where the behaviour of the solution is prescribed at the jump points of the driving moving set. An existence and uniqueness theorem for such formulation is proved. As a consequence we derive a formulation and an existence/uniqueness theorem for sweeping processes driven by an arbitrary BV moving set, whose evolution is not necessarily right continuous. Applications to the play operator of elastoplasticity are also shown.

Slice regular semigroups

In this paper we introduce the notion of slice regular right linear semigroup in a quaternionic Banach space. It is an operatorial function which is slice regular (a noncommutative counterpart of analyticity) and which satisfies a noncommutative semigroup law characterizing the exponential function in an infinite dimensional noncommutative setting. We prove that a right linear operator semigroup in a quaternionic Banach space is slice regular if and only if its generator is spherical sectorial. This result provides a connection between the slice regularity and the noncommutative semigroups theory, and characterizes those semigroups which can be represented by a noncommutative Cauchy integral formula. All our results are generalized to Banach two-sided modules having as a set of scalar any real associative *-algebra, Clifford R_n algebras included.

Noncommutative Cauchy integral formula

The aim of this paper is to provide and prove the most general Cauchy integral formula for slice regular functions and for C^1 functions on a real alternative *-algebra. Slice regular functions represent a generalization of the classical concept of holomorphic function of a complex variable in the noncommutative and nonassociative settings. As an application, we obtain two kinds of local series expansion for slice regular functions.

Semigroups over real alternative *-algebras: generation theorems and spherical sectorial operators

The aim of this paper is twofold. On one hand, generalizing some recent results obtained in the quaternionic setting, but using simpler techniques, we prove the generation theorems for semigroups in Banach spaces whose set of scalars belongs to the class of real alternative *-algebras, which includes, besides real and complex numbers, quaternions, octonions and Clifford algebras. On the other hand, in this new general framework, we introduce the notion of spherical sectorial operator and we prove that a spherical sectorial operator generates a semigroup that can be represented by a Cauchy integral formula. It follows that such a semigroup is analytic in time.
