Learning-Based Navigation for Indoor Mobile Robots

This paper presents a learning-based navigation framework for indoor mobile robots. The proposed method combines a supervised neural global planner, trained from cost-aware A* expert trajectories, with the proposed Learning-Based DWA local planner, which is formulated as discrete candidate selection over the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) action lattice. For local planning, the policy is first trained by behavior cloning and then refined by Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) under feasibility-aware masking. The framework is implemented and evaluated in both simulated and real-world indoor environments. Experimental results show that the proposed method generates feasible global routes and reliable local motion commands for safe goal-directed navigation in the presence of obstacles. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating learning-based global planning with reinforcement-learning-refined local control for indoor mobile robot navigation. STR Robot: Design of an Autonomous Mobile Robot from Simulation to Reality

With the rapid development of simulation tools, the development and validation of autonomous robotic systems have become more efficient before real-world deployment. This paper presents a simulation-to-real implementation of an autonomous mobile robot based on an existing mechanical platform. Instead of focusing on mechanical design, our work concentrates on the development of the onboard control, self-localization, and autonomous navigation system. The proposed robot is equipped with onboard sensing and computation to estimate its pose and navigate autonomously in the environment. The overall framework is first developed and tested in simulation, and then deployed on the real robot for experimental evaluation. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach and show that simulation provides an effective foundation for developing reliable autonomous mobile robot systems. The source code will be released at https://ntdathp.github.io/outdoor-robot-web.

Coordinate-Consistent Localization via Continuous-Time Calibration and Fusion of UWB and SLAM Observations

Onboard simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods are commonly used to provide accurate localization information for autonomous robots. However, the coordinate origin of SLAM estimate often resets for each run. On the other hand, UWB-based localization with fixed anchors can ensure a consistent coordinate reference across sessions; however, it requires an accurate assignment of the anchor nodes' coordinates. To this end, we propose a two-stage approach that calibrates and fuses UWB data and SLAM data to achieve coordinate-wise consistent and accurate localization in the same environment. In the first stage, we solve a continuous-time batch optimization problem by using the range and odometry data from one full run, incorporating height priors and anchor-to-anchor distance factors to recover the anchors' 3D positions. For the subsequent runs in the second stage, a sliding-window optimization scheme fuses the UWB and SLAM data, which facilitates accurate localization in the same coordinate system. Experiments are carried out on the NTU VIRAL dataset with six scenarios of UAV flight, and we show that calibration using data in one run is sufficient to enable accurate localization in the remaining runs. We release our source code to benefit the community at https://github.com/ntdathp/slam-uwb-calibration.
