Gromov width of the disk cotangent bundle of spheres of revolution

Inspired by work of the first and second author, this paper studies the Gromov width of the disk cotangent bundle of spheroids and Zoll spheres of revolution. This is achieved with the use of techniques from integrable systems and embedded contact homology capacities.

Periodicity characterization by capacities for star-shaped domains

We complete the spectral characterization of Besse and Zoll Reeb flows on the standard contact sphere $S^{2n-1}$ initiated by Ginzburg-Gürel-Mazzucchelli. Roughly speaking, it states that a Reeb flow on the boundary of any star-shaped domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ is Besse if and only if it has $n$ coinciding Ekeland-Hofer capacities, and that it is Zoll if and only if the first $n$ capacities coincide.

Hopf orbits and the first ECH capacity

We consider dynamically convex star-shaped domains in a symplectic vector space of dimension $4$. For such a domain, a ``Hopf orbit'' is a closed characteristic in the boundary which is unknotted and has self-linking number $-1$. We show that the minimum action among Hopf orbits exists and defines a symplectic capacity for dynamically convex star-shaped domains. We further show that this capacity agrees with the first ECH capacity for such domains. Combined with a result of Edtmair, this implies that for dynamically convex star-shaped domains in four dimensions, the first ECH capacity agrees with the cylinder capacity. This also provides a method to show that the first ECH capacity of a dynamically convex star-shaped domain satisfies the axioms of a normalized symplectic capacity without any need for Seiberg-Witten theory.

Embedded contact homology of the unit cotangent bundle of the Klein bottle

We give a combinatorial description of the embedded contact homology chain complex of the unit cotangent bundle of the Klein bottle with the standard flat Riemannian metric. Using pseudoholomorphic curves coming from the associated differential, we find an obstruction theorem for symplectic embeddings of toric domains $X_Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^2$ into the unit disk cotangent bundle $D^*K$. As an application we compute the Gromov width of $D^*K$.

The equivalence of Ekeland-Hofer and equivariant symplectic homology capacities

In this paper, we prove that the Ekeland-Hofer capacities coincide on all star-shaped domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ with the equivariant symplectic homology capacities defined by the first author and Hutchings, answering a 35 years old question. Along the way, we prove that given a Hamiltonian $H$, the (equivariant) Floer homology of $H$ is chain-complex isomorphic to the Morse homology of the Hamiltonian action functional.

Characterizing symplectic capacities on ellipsoids

It is a long-standing conjecture that all symplectic capacities which are equal to the Gromov width for ellipsoids coincide on a class of convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$. It is known that they coincide for monotone toric domains in all dimensions. In this paper, we study whether requiring a capacity to be equal to the $k^{th}$ Ekeland-Hofer capacity for all ellipsoids can characterize it on a class of domains. We prove that for $k=n=2$, this holds for convex toric domains, but not for all monotone toric domains. We also prove that for $k=n\ge 3$, this does not hold even for convex toric domains.

From Lagrangian Products to Toric Domains via the Toda Lattice

In this paper we use the periodic Toda lattice to show that certain Lagrangian product configurations in the classical phase space are symplectically equivalent to toric domains. In particular, we prove that the Lagrangian product of a certain simplex and the Voronoi cell of the root lattice $A_n$ is symplectically equivalent to a Euclidean ball. As a consequence, we deduce that the Lagrangian product of an equilateral triangle and a regular hexagon is symplectomorphic to a Euclidean ball in dimension 4.

Coarse distance from dynamically convex to convex

Chaidez and Edtmair have recently found the first example of dynamically convex domains in $\mathbb R^4$ that are not symplectomorphic to convex domains (called symplectically convex domains), answering a long-standing open question. In this paper, we discover new examples of such domains without referring to Chaidez-Edtmair's criterion. We also show that these domains are arbitrarily far from the set of symplectically convex domains in $\mathbb R^4$ with respect to the coarse symplectic Banach-Mazur distance by using an explicit numerical criterion for symplectic non-convexity.

Cube normalized symplectic capacities

We introduce a new normalization condition for symplectic capacities, which we call cube normalization. This condition is satisfied by the Lagrangian capacity and the cube capacity. Our main result is an analogue of the strong Viterbo conjecture for monotone toric domains in all dimensions. Moreover, we give a family of examples where standard normalized capacities coincide but not cube normalized ones. Along the way, we give an explicit formula for the Lagrangian capacity on a large class of toric domains.

Symplectic embeddings into disk cotangent bundles

In this paper, we compute the embedded contact homology (ECH) capacities of the disk cotangent bundles $D^*S^2$ and $D^*\mathbb{R} P^2$. We also find sharp symplectic embeddings into these domains. In particular, we compute their Gromov widths. In order to do that, we explicitly calculate the ECH chain complexes of $S^*S^2$ and $S^* \mathbb{R} P^2$ using a direct limit argument on the action inspired by Bourgeois's Morse-Bott approach and ideas from Nelson-Weiler's work on the ECH of prequantization bundles. Moreover, we use integrable systems techniques to find explicit symplectic embeddings. In particular, we prove that the disk cotangent bundles of a hemisphere and of a punctured sphere are symplectomorphic to an open ball and a symplectic bidisk, respectively.

Examples around the strong Viterbo conjecture

A strong version of a conjecture of Viterbo asserts that all normalized symplectic capacities agree on convex domains. We review known results showing that certain specific normalized symplectic capacities agree on convex domains. We also review why all normalized symplectic capacities agree on $S^1$-invariant convex domains. We introduce a new class of examples called "monotone toric domains", which are not necessarily convex, and which include all dynamically convex toric domains in four dimensions. We prove that for monotone toric domains in four dimensions, all normalized symplectic capacities agree. For monotone toric domains in arbitrary dimension, we prove that the Gromov width agrees with the first equivariant capacity. We also study a family of examples of non-monotone toric domains and determine when the conclusion of the strong Viterbo conjecture holds for these examples. Along the way we compute the cylindrical capacity of a large class of "weakly convex toric domains" in four dimensions.

Symplectic embeddings of the $\ell_p$-sum of two discs

In this paper we study symplectic embedding questions for the $\ell_p$-sum of two discs in ${\mathbb R}^4$, when $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. In particular, we compute the symplectic inner and outer radii in these cases, and show how different kinds of embedding rigidity and flexibility phenomena appear as a function of the parameter $p$.

On the rigidity of lagrangian products

Motivated by work of the first author, this paper studies symplectic embedding problems of lagrangian products that are sufficiently symmetric. In general, lagrangian products arise naturally in the study of billiards. The main result of the paper is the rigidity of a large class of symplectic embedding problems of lagrangian products in any dimension. This is achieved by showing that the lagrangian products under consideration are symplectomorphic to toric domains, and by using the Gromov width and the cube capacity introduced by Gutt and Hutchings to obtain rigidity.

A topological grading on bordered Heegaard Floer homology

In this paper, we construct a canonical grading on bordered Heegaard Floer homology by homotopy classes of nonvanishing vector fields. This grading is a generalization of our construction of an absolute grading on Heegaard Floer homology and it extends the well-known grading with values in a noncommutative group defined by Lipshitz-Ozsváth-Thurston.

Symplectic embeddings into four-dimensional concave toric domains

ECH capacities give obstructions to symplectically embedding one symplectic four-manifold with boundary into another. We compute the ECH capacities of a large family of symplectic four-manifolds with boundary, called "concave toric domains". Examples include the (nondisjoint) union of two ellipsoids in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We use these calculations to find sharp obstructions to certain symplectic embeddings involving concave toric domains. For example: (1) we calculate the Gromov width of every concave toric domain; (2) we show that many inclusions of an ellipsoid into the union of an ellipsoid and a cylinder are "optimal"; and (3) we find a sharp obstruction to ball packings into certain unions of an ellipsoid and a cylinder.
