Existence of bases implies the axiom of choice, a foundation-free proof

We prove that, in Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory with the axiom of Foundation removed, the statement that every vector space has a basis implies the Axiom of Choice ($\mathsf{AC}$), concluding that the classical equivalence between $\mathsf{AC}$ and the existence of bases does not require regularity. This result extends to set theory with atoms.

Almost Disjointness Principles and $Q$-Space Cardinals

Banakh and Bazylevych introduced separation-axiom variants $\mathfrak q_i$, for $i=1,2,2\frac{1}{2}$, of the cardinal $\mathfrak q$, together with a cardinal $\mathfrak{adp}$ lying between $\mathfrak{dp}$ and $\mathfrak{ap}$. They asked whether $\mathfrak{adp}$ coincides with either of these two cardinals. We prove in ZFC that $\mathfrak{adp}=\mathfrak{dp}$. We define a dual variant $\mathfrak{adp}_2$ and show that $\mathfrak{adp}_2=\mathfrak{ap}$. We further study the relation between $\mathfrak{ap}$ and the weakened $Q$-space cardinals. We introduce a tree analogue $\mathfrak{at}$ of $\mathfrak{ap}$ and prove $\mathfrak{at}=\mathfrak q_{2}$, concluding that $\mathfrak{ap}\leq\mathfrak q_{2}$, which answers a question of Banakh and Bazylevych. Assuming the Generalized Continuum Hypothesis, we construct ccc forcing extensions with $\mathfrak{ap}=ω_1<\mathfrak{at}=\mathfrak c$, so $\mathfrak{ap}<\mathfrak q_2$ is consistent with ZFC.

Determining the Rearrangement Number

The rearrangement number $\mathfrak{rr}$ is the least cardinality of a collection of permutations of $ω$ such that every conditionally convergent real series is disrupted by some permutation in the collection. Blass, Brendle, Brian, Hamkins, Hardy, and Larson proved that $\max\{\operatorname{cov}(\mathcal N),\mathfrak b\}\leq\mathfrak{rr}\leq\operatorname{non}(\mathcal M)$ and asked whether $\mathfrak{rr}=\operatorname{non}(\mathcal M)$. We prove in ZFC that $\mathfrak{rr}=\operatorname{non}(\mathcal M)$.

A Borel Concept Class of VC Dimension One with a Non-PAC Consistent Learner in ZFC

The fundamental theorem of statistical learning states that, under suitable measurability assumptions, finite Vapnik--Chervonenkis (VC) dimension guarantees that every proper consistent learning rule is probably approximately correct (PAC). Blumer, Ehrenfeucht, Haussler, and Warmuth showed, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, that the "well-behavedness" condition of the concept class cannot be omitted: they constructed a concept class of Borel sets of VC dimension one admitting a consistent learning rule that is not PAC. We show that the Continuum Hypothesis is unnecessary. Working in Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC) alone, we construct a concept class of Borel sets on $[0,1]$ of VC dimension one and a proper consistent learning rule that is not PAC. More precisely, for a suitable Borel probability measure and target concept, the rule has true risk one at every sample size on a set of samples of outer probability one. Consequently, finite VC dimension and Borel measurability of the individual concepts do not suffice to guarantee that every proper consistent learning rule is PAC. The result shows, with no need of extra set-theoretical assumptions, that the additional regularity assumption in the fundamental theorem cannot in general be omitted.

The Wallace problem and countably compact torsion-free Abelian groups in ZFC

We prove in ZFC that every torsion-free Abelian group of cardinality $\mathfrak c$ admits a Hausdorff countably compact group topology without nontrivial convergent sequences. In particular, this applies to the free Abelian group $\mathbb{Z}^{(\mathfrak c)}$, the Baer-Specker group $\mathbb{Z}^ω$ and $\mathbb{Q}^{(\mathfrak c)}$. For the topology constructed on $\mathbb{Z}^{(\mathfrak c)}$, the coordinatewise nonnegative cone is countably compact in the subspace topology. Consequently, there exists in ZFC a commutative Tychonoff countably compact topological semigroup which has two-sided cancellation but is not a group, giving a negative answer to Wallace's question. Combined with earlier results, the main theorem also yields in ZFC a Tychonoff countably compact topological semigroup containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup and a functionally Hausdorff countably compact paratopological group that is not a topological group.

Countable compactness in powers of topological groups and Ramsey theoretic variations of compactness

Countable compactness need not be preserved by finite products. Motivated by compactness notions for maps indexed by finite subsets of $ω$, we introduce cascade countable compactness for arbitrary barriers. For $\mathcal B=[ω]^2$, this is the previously studied notion of being doubly countably compact. We show that, in ZFC, if $G$ is a Hausdorff topological group and $1\leq k<ω$, then $k$-cascade countable compactness of $G$ implies that $G^k$ is countably compact. Cascade countable compactness for the Schreier barrier implies that $G^ω$ is countably compact. In contrast, we construct a Tychonoff space that is $n$-cascade countably compact for every $n<ω$ but has a non-countably compact square, and a Hausdorff Boolean group $H$ that is $\mathcal B$-countably compact for every barrier $\mathcal B$ but whose square is not countably compact. We also construct a Hausdorff Boolean group without nontrivial convergent sequences that is $\mathcal B$-cascade countably compact for every barrier $\mathcal B$. Finally, we obtain a subspace $X\subseteqβω$ such that $X^κ$ is $n$-cascade countably compact for every $κ<\mathfrak h$ and every $n<ω$, whereas $\exp X$ is not pseudocompact.

On covering properties of end and ray spaces

We provide new results on combinatorial characterizations of covering properties in end spaces and ray spaces. In particular, we characterize the Lindelöf degree, the extent, the Rothberger property, $σ$-compactness and the Menger property for ray, end and edge-end spaces. We show that $σ$-compactness and the Menger property are equivalent for these spaces, and that they are all $D$-spaces. As an application of some of these characterizations, we are able to provide combinatorial characterizations of graphs with countably many ends and edge-ends.

$Ψ$-Spaces and Semi-Proximality

We discuss the proximal game and semi-proximality in $Ψ$-spaces of almost disjoint families over an infinite countable set and $Ψ$-spaces of ladder systems on $ω_1$. We show that a semi-proximal almost disjoint families must be nowhere MAD, anti-Luzin and characterize semi-proximality for a class of ${\mathbb R}$-embeddable almost disjoint families. We show that a $Ψ$-spaces defined from a uniformizable ladder system is semi-proximal and a $Ψ$-space defined on a $\clubsuit^*$ sequence is not semi-proximal. Thus the existence of non-semi-proximal $Ψ$-space over a ladder system is independent of ZFC.

On Products of $Δ$-sets

We prove the consistency of the existence of a $Q$-set whose square is not a $Δ$-set and that if there is a $Δ$-set, then there exists a $Δ$-set whose all finite powers are $Δ$-sets.

A Wallace semigroup whose every finite power is countably compact

We show that, assuming the existence of $\mathfrak{c}$ incomparable selective ultrafilters, there exists a Wallace semigroup whose infinite countable power is the least power which fails to be countably compact. This answers positively Question 9.4 of \cite{Tomita15}.

Almost-normality of Isbell-Mrówka spaces

We explore almost-normality in Isbell-Mrówka spaces and some related concepts. We use forcing to provide an example of an almost-normal not normal almost disjoint family, explore the concept of semi-normality in Isbell-Mrówka spaces, define the concept of strongly $(\aleph_0, <\mathfrak c)$-separated almost disjoint families and prove the generic existence of completely separable strongly $(\aleph_0, <\mathfrak c)$-almost disjoint families assuming $\mathfrak s=\mathfrak c$ and $\mathfrak b=\mathfrak c$. We also provide an example of a Tychonoff almost-normal not normal pseudocompact space which is not countably compact, answering a question from P. Szeptycki and S. Garcia-Balan.

Forcing a classification of non-torsion Abelian groups of size at most $2^\mathfrak c$ with non-trivial convergent sequences

We force a classification of all the Abelian groups of cardinality at most $2^\mathfrak c$ that admit a countably compact group with a non-trivial convergent sequence. In particular, we answer (consistently) Question 24 of Dikranjan and Shakhmatov for cardinality at most $2^{\mathfrak c}$, by showing that if a non-torsion Abelian group of size at most $2^\mathfrak c$ admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology, then it admits a countably compact Hausdorff group topology with non-trivial convergent sequences.

Maximal almost disjoint families and pseudocompactness of hyperspaces

We show that all maximal almost disjoint families have pseudocompact Vietoris hyperspace if and only if $\mathsf{MA}_\mathfrak c (\mathcal P(ω)/\mathrm{fin})$ holds. We further study the question whether there is a maximal almost disjoint family whose hyperspace is pseudocompact and prove that consistently such families do not exist \emph{genericaly}, by constructing a consistent example of a maximal almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of size less than $\mathfrak c$ whose hyperspace is not pseudocompact.

On $p$-compact group topologies on direct sums of ${\mathbb Q}$

We prove that if $p$ is a selective ultrafilter then ${\mathbb Q}^{(κ)}$ has a $p$-compact group topology without non-trivial convergent sequences, for each infinite cardinal $κ=κ^ω$. In particular, this gives the first arbitrarily large examples of countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences that are torsion-free.

Small MAD families whose Isbell-Mrówka spaces are pseudocompact

Given a countable transitive model $M$ for ZFC+CH, we prove that one can produce a maximal almost disjoint family in $M$ whose Vietoris Hyperspace of its Isbell-Mrówka space is pseudocompact on every Cohen extension of $M$. We also show that a classical example of $ω_1$-sized maximal almost disjoint family obtained by a forcing iteration of length $ω_1$ in a model of non CH is such that the Vietoris Hyperspace of its Isbell-Mrówka space is pseudocompact.
