Enhancing the ultrafast third order nonlinear optical response by charge transfer in VSe2-reduced graphene oxide hybrid

Nonlinear optical phenomena play a critical role in understanding microscopic light-matter interactions and have far-reaching applications across various fields, such as biosensing, quantum information, optical switching, and all-optical data processing. Most of these applications require materials with high third-order absorptive and refractive optical nonlinearities. However, most materials show weak nonlinear optical responses due to their perturbative nature and often need to be improved for practical applications. Here, we demonstrate that the charge donor-acceptor hybrid of VSe2-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybrid exhibits enhanced ultrafast third-order absorptive and refractive nonlinearities compared to the pristine systems, at least by one order of magnitude. Through density functional theory and Bader charge analysis, we elucidate the strong electronic coupling in the VSe2-rGO hybrid, involving the transfer of electrons from VSe2 to rGO. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements confirm the electronic coupling and charge transfer. Furthermore, we fabricate an ultrafast optical limiter device with better performance parameters, such as an onset threshold of 2.5 mJ cm-2 and differential transmittance of 0.42.

Ultrafast Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Response of Charge Coupled Gold Nanoparticle-Ge24Se76 Heterostructure

The donor-acceptor interaction of a charge-coupled heterostructure encompassing a metal and an amorphous semiconductor subjected to a laser field has many potential applications in the realm of nonlinear optics. In this work, we fabricate an electron donor gold nanoparticle (AuNP) and acceptor amorphous Ge24Se76 heterostructure on a quartz substrate using a sequential thermal evaporation technique. In this charge-coupled heterostructure, we demonstrate the ultrafast third-order nonlinear absorptive and refractive response and their sign reversal compared to pristine Ge24Se76. Enhanced optical nonlinearity in these heterostructures of varying plasmonic wavelengths is due to charge transfer, verified by the Raman spectroscopy. Further, the ultrafast transient absorption measurements support the thesis of charge transfer in the AuNP/Ge24Se76 heterostructure. These findings open up exciting opportunities for developing novel device technologies with far-reaching applications in nonlinear optics.

Magnetic transition in the $J_\textrm{eff} = 1/2$ Kagomé system Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$

We present a study of Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ (SSZO) through magnetization and specific heat capacity $C_p(T)$ measurements. SSZO contains well separated planes of Sm$^{3+}$ magnetic ions on a Kagomé lattice. Though our magnetic susceptibility (where the data are limited down to 2\,K) does not show any anomaly, the $C_p(T)$ data which have been taken down to 0.35 K reveal a broad maximum at $T\sim1.5$\,K followed by a sharp peak at $T\sim0.5$\,K indicative of short-range correlations and long-range order, respectively.

Raman fingerprints of fractionalized Majorana excitations in honeycomb iridate Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

We report low-temperature (down to $\sim$5 K) Raman signatures of the recently discovered intercalated honeycomb magnet Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, a putative Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate. The Kitaev QSL is predicted to host Majorana fermions as its emergent elementary excitations through a thermal fractionalization of entangled spins $S = 1/2$. We observe evidence of this fractionalization in the low-energy magnetic continuum whose temperature evolution harbours signatures of the predicted Fermi statistics obeyed by the itinerant Majorana quasiparticles. The magnetic Raman susceptibility evinces a crossover from the conventional to a Kitaev paramagnetic state below the temperature of $\sim$80 K. Additionally, the development of the Fano asymmetry in the low frequency phonon mode and the enhancement of integrated Raman susceptibilities below the crossover temperature signifies prominent coupling between the vibrational and Majorana fermionic excitations.

Sr$_3$LiIrO$_6$: a potential quantum spin liquid candidate in the one dimensional $d^4$ iridate family

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) offers a large variety of novel and extraordinary magnetic and electronic properties in otherwise `ordinary pool' of heavy ion oxides. Here we present a detailed study on an apparently isolated hexagonal 2$H$ spin-chain $d^4$ iridate Sr$_3$LiIrO$_6$ (SLIO) with geometric frustration. Our structural studies clearly reveal perfect Li-Ir chemical order in this compound. Our combined experimental and {\it ab-initio} electronic structure investigations establish a magnetic ground state with finite Ir$^{5+}$ magnetic moments in this compound, contrary to the anticipated nonmagnetic $J$=0 state. Furthermore, the dc magnetic susceptibility ($χ$), heat capacity ($C_p$) and spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) studies unravel that despite having noticeable antiferromagnetic correlation among the Ir$^{5+}$ local moments, this SLIO system evades any kind of magnetic ordering down to at least 2 K due to geometrical frustration, arising from the comparable interchain Ir-O-O-Ir superexchange interaction strengths, hence promoting SLIO as a potential quantum spin liquid candidate.

Failure to achieve the $J_{eff}$~=~0 state even in nearly isolated Ir$^{5+}$ in Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$: are iridates enough for realizing true $j$-$j$ coupling?

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) often gives rise to interesting electronic and magnetic phases in an otherwise ordinary pool of paramagnetic heavy metal oxides. In presence of strong SOC, assumed to be working in $j$-$j$ coupling regime, 5$d^4$ iridates are generally speculated to possess a nonmagnetic $J_{eff}$~=~0 singlet ground state, which invariably gets masked due to different solid-state effects (e.g. hopping). Here, we try to probe the trueness of the atomic SOC-based proposal in an apparently 1-dimensional system, Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$, possessing a 2$H$ hexagonal structure with well separated Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) ions. But all the detailed experimental as well as theoretical characterizations reveal that the ground state of Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$ is not nonmagnetic, rather accommodating a significantly high effective magnetic moment on Ir$^{5+}$ ion. However our combined dc susceptibility ($χ$), ${}^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon-spin-relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and heat capacity ($C_p$) measurements clearly refute any sign of spin-freezing or ordered magnetism among the Ir$^{5+}$ moments due to geometrical exchange frustration, while in-depth zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR investigations strongly point towards inhomogeneous quantum spin-orbital liquid (QSOL)-like ground state. In addition, the linear temperature dependence of both the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and the magnetic heat capacity at low temperatures suggest low-lying gapless spin excitations in the QSOL phase of this material. Finally, we conclude that the effective SOC realised in $d^4$ iridates are unlikely to offer a ground state which will be consistent with a purely atomic $j$-$j$ coupling description.

Unusual spin dynamics in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state of Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$

Recently, there have been contrary claims of Kitaev spin-liquid behaviour and ordered behavior in the honeycomb compound Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ based on various experimental signatures. Our investigations on this system reveal a low-temperature ordered state with persistent dynamics down to the lowest temperatures. Magnetic order is confirmed by clear oscillations in the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) time spectrum below 9 K till 52 mK. Coincidentally in $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance, a wipe-out of the signal is observed below $\sim$ 10 K which again strongly indicates magnetic order in the low temperature regime. This is supported by our density functional theory calculations which show an appreciable Heisenberg exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian that favors magnetic ordering. The $^7$Li shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate also show anomalies at $\sim$ 50 K. They are likely related to the onset of dynamic magnetic correlations, but their origin is not completely clear. Detailed analysis of our $μ$SR data is consistent with a co-existence of incommensurate Néel and striped environments. A significant and undiminished dynamical relaxation rate ($\sim 5$ MHz) as seen in $μ$SR deep into the ordered phase indicates enhanced quantum fluctuations in the ordered state.

A Theory of Rectangularly Dualizable Graphs

A plane graph is called a rectangular graph if each of its edges can be oriented either horizontally or vertically, each of its interior regions is a four-sided region and all interior regions can be fitted in a rectangular enclosure. Only planar graphs can be dualized. If the dual of a plane graph is a rectangular graph, then the plane graph is a rectangularly dualizable graph. In 1985, Koźmiński and Kinnen presented a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a rectangularly dualizable graph for a separable connected plane graph. In this paper, we present a counter example for which the conditions given by them for separable connected plane graphs fail and hence, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a plane graph to be a rectangularly dualizable graph.

Rectangularly Dualizable Graphs: Area-Universality

A plane graph is called a rectangular graph if each of its edges can be oriented either horizontally or vertically, each of its interior regions is a four-sided region and all interior regions can be fitted in a rectangular enclosure. If the dual of a plane graph is a rectangular graph, then the plane graph is a rectangularly dualizable graph. A rectangular dual is it area-universal if any assignment of areas to each of its regions can be realized by a combinatorially weak equivalent rectangular dual. It is still unknown that there exists no polynomial time algorithm to construct an area-universal rectangular dual for a rectangularly dualizable graph . In this paper, we describe a class of rectangularly dualizable graphs wherein each graph can be realized by an area-universal rectangular dual. We also present a polynomial time algorithm for its construction.

Transformations of Rectangular Dualizable Graphs

A plane graph is said to be a rectangular graph if each of its edges can be oriented horizontal or vertical, its internal regions are four-sided and it has a rectangular enclosure. If dual of a planar graph is a rectangular graph, then the graph is said to be a rectangular dualizable graph (RDG). In this paper, we present adjacency transformations between RDGs and present polynomial time algorithms for their transformations. An RDG $\mathcal{G}=(V, E)$ is called maximal RDG (MRDG) if there does not exist an RDG $\mathcal{G'}=(V, E')$ with $E' \supset E$. An RDG $\mathcal{G}=(V, E)$ is said to be an edge-reducible if there exists an RDG $\mathcal{G'}=(V, E')$ such that $E\supset E'$. If an RDG is not edge-reducible, it is said to be an edge-irreducible RDG. We show that there always exists an MRDG for a given RDG. We also show that an MRDG is edge-reducible and can always be transformed to a minimal one (an edge-irreducible RDG).

Zero-field spin-orbit-torque switching driven by magnetic spin Hall effect

Spin Hall effect plays an essential role in generating spin current from the injected charge current, following the Dyakonov-Perel rule that the directions of charge flow, spin flow and spin polarization are mutually perpendicular to each other. Recently, its generalization from an antiferromagnet, so-called magnetic spin Hall effect, has been studied and verified by measuring anomalous spin accumulations. Here, we investigate the magnetic spin Hall effect in bilayer materials made of a heavy metal and an antiferromagnet. The spin current generated by the magnetic spin Hall effect accomplishes spin-orbit-torque switching for ferromagnetic magnetization and exchange bias concurrently without any external magnetic field. The switching mechanism crucially relies on the non-collinear spin texture in the antiferromagnet, capable of generating symmetry-breaking components in the spin-current tensor so that the external magnetic field is no longer necessary. The zero-field concurrent switching of magnetization and exchange bias is a significant technological breakthrough. Furthermore, our findings pave the way to explore the magnetic spin Hall effects in various spin textures through spin-orbit-torque switching.

The spin-1/2 coupled tetramer system Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$ _4$ probed by magnetization, specific heat, and $^{31}$P-NMR

We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline Ba(TiO)Cu$_{4}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{4}$ (BTCPO) via x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and $^{31}$P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements. BTCPO has a 2D layered structure with interlinked Cu$_{4}$O$_{12}$ tetramer units. A broad maximum is observed around 16.5 K in our magnetization data accompanied by a sharp anomaly around $T$ = 9.5 K in the heat capacity. An anomaly at $T$ = 9.5 K is also found in the temperature dependence of the $^{31}$P NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. A power law behavior for the heat capacity as well as for the $^{31}$P $1/T_1$ below the ordering temperature could be obtained. The $^{31}$P NMR lineshape is asymmetric and the NMR shift tracks the bulk spin-susceptibility. We estimated the isotropic and axial components of the hyperfine coupling tensor to be as the $A^{iso}_{hf} \backsimeq 6794$ $\rm{Oe/μ_{B}}$ and $A^{ax}_{hf} \backsimeq 818$ $\rm{Oe/μ_{B}}$, respectively.

Magnetic ground state of distorted 6H perovskite Ba$_3$CdIr$_2$O$_9$

Perovskite iridates of 6H hexagonal structure present a plethora of possibilities in terms of the variety of ground states resulting from a competition between spin-orbit coupling (SOC), hopping, noncubic crystal field ($Δ_{CFE}^{NC}$) and superexchange energy scales within the Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers. Here we have investigated one such compound Ba$_3$CdIr$_2$O$_9$ by x-ray diffraction, dc magnetic susceptibility($χ$), heat capacity($C_p$) and also ${}^{113}$Cd nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We have established that the magnetic ground state has a small but finite magnetic moment on Ir$^{5+}$ in this system, which likely arises from intradimer Ir-Ir hopping and local crystal distortions. Our heat capacity, NMR, and dc magnetic susceptibility measurements further rule out any kind of magnetic long-/short-range ordering among the Ir moments down to at least 2K. In addition, the magnetic heat capacity data shows linear temperature dependence at low temperatures under applied high fields ($>$ 30 kOe), suggesting gapless spin-density of states in the compound.

An Automatic Method for Complete Brain Matter Segmentation from Multislice CT scan

Computed tomography imaging is well accepted for its imaging speed, image contrast & resolution and cost. Thus it has wide use in detection and diagnosis of brain diseases. But unfortunately reported works on CT segmentation is not very significant. In this paper, a robust automatic segmentation system is presented which is capable of segment complete brain matter from CT slices, without any lose in information. The proposed method is simple, fast, accurate and completely automatic. It can handle multislice CT scan in single run. From a given multislice CT dataset, one slice is selected automatically to form masks for segmentation. Two types of masks are created to handle nasal slices in a better way. Masks are created from selected reference slice using automatic seed point selection and region growing technique. One mask is designed for brain matter and another includes the skull of the reference slice. This second mask is used as global reference mask for all slices whereas the brain matter mask is implemented on only adjacent slices and continuously modified for better segmentation. Slices in given dataset are divided into two batches, before reference slice and after reference slice. Each batch segmented separately. Successive propagation of brain matter mask has demonstrated very high potential in reported segmentation. Presented result shows highest sensitivity and more than 96% accuracy in all cases. Resulted segmented images can be used for any brain disease diagnosis or further image analysis.

Binary Image Features Proposed to Empower Computer Vision

This literature has proposed three fast and easy computable image features to improve computer vision by offering more human-like vision power. These features are not based on image pixels absolute or relative intensity; neither based on shape or colour. So, no complex pixel by pixel calculation is required. For human eyes, pixel by pixel calculation is like seeing an image with maximum zoom which is done only when a higher level of details is required. Normally, first we look at an image to get an overall idea about it to know whether it deserves further investigation or not. This capacity of getting an idea at a glance is analysed and three basic features are proposed to empower computer vision. Potential of proposed features is tested and established through different medical dataset. Achieved accuracy in classification demonstrates possibilities and potential of the use of the proposed features in image processing.

Centralized group key management scheme for secure multicast communication without re-keying

In the secure group communication, data is transmitted in such a way that only the group members are able to receive the messages. The main problem in the solution using symmetric key is heavy re-keying cost. To reduce re-keying cost tree based architecture is used. But it requires extra overhead to balance the key- tree in order to achieve logarithmic re-keying cost. The main challenging issue in dynamic and secure multimedia multicast communication is to design a centralized group key management scheme with minimal computational, communicational and storages complexities without breaching security issues. Several authors have proposed different centralized group key management schemes, wherein one of them proposes reducing communicational complexity but increases computational and storage costs however another proposes decreasing the computational and storage costs which eventually breaches forward and backward secrecy. In this paper we propose a comparatively more efficient centralized group key management scheme that not only minimize the computational, communicational and storages complexities but also maintaining the security at the optimal level. The message encryptions and decryptions costs are also minimized. Further, we also provide an extended multicast scheme, in which the several requests towards leaving or joining the group can be done by large number of members simultaneously. In order to obtain better performance of multicast encryption, the symmetric-key and asymmetric-key cryptosystems may be combined.
