Cooperative Sequential Spectrum Sensing Algorithms for OFDM

This paper considers the problem of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks when the primary user employs Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). We develop cooperative sequential detection algorithms based on energy detectors and the autocorrelation property of cyclic prefix (CP) used in OFDM systems and compare their performances. We show that sequential detection provides much better performance than the traditional fixed sample size (snapshot) based detectors. We also study the effect of model uncertainties such as timing and frequency offset, IQ-imbalance and uncertainty in noise and transmit power on the performance of the detectors. We modify the detectors to mitigate the effects of these impairments. The performance of the proposed algorithms are studied via simulations. It is shown that energy detector performs significantly better than the CP-based detector, except in case of a snapshot detector with noise power uncertainty. Also, unlike for the CP-based detector, most of the above mentioned impairments have no effect on the energy detector.

Generalized Analysis of a Distributed Energy Efficient Algorithm for Change Detection

An energy efficient distributed Change Detection scheme based on Page's CUSUM algorithm was presented in \cite{icassp}. In this paper we consider a nonparametric version of this algorithm. In the algorithm in \cite{icassp}, each sensor runs CUSUM and transmits only when the CUSUM is above some threshold. The transmissions from the sensors are fused at the physical layer. The channel is modeled as a Multiple Access Channel (MAC) corrupted with noise. The fusion center performs another CUSUM to detect the change. In this paper, we generalize the algorithm to also include nonparametric CUSUM and provide a unified analysis.

Distributed Joint Source-Channel Coding for Functions over a Multiple Access Channel

In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for lossy transmission of functions of correlated data over a multiple access channel (MAC). The conditions obtained can be shown as generalized version of Yamamoto's result. We also obtain efficient joint source-channel coding schemes for transmission of discrete and continuous alphabet sources to recover the function values. Keywords: Joint source-channel coding, Graph coloring, Lipschitz functions, Correlated sources.

Joint Source-Channel Coding over a Fading Multiple Access Channel with Partial Channel State Information

In this paper we address the problem of transmission of correlated sources over a fast fading multiple access channel (MAC) with partial channel state information available at both the encoders and the decoder. We provide sufficient conditions for transmission with given distortions. Next these conditions are specialized to a Gaussian MAC (GMAC). We provide the optimal power allocation strategy and compare the strategy with various levels of channel state information. Keywords: Fading MAC, Power allocation, Partial channel state information, Correlated sources.

On Optimal Distributed Joint Source-Channel Coding for Correlated Gaussian Sources over Gaussian Channels

We consider the problem of distributed joint source-channel coding of correlated Gaussian sources over a Gaussian Multiple Access Channel (GMAC). There may be side information at the decoder and/or at the encoders. First we specialize a general result (for transmission of correlated sources over a MAC with side information) to obtain sufficient conditions for reliable transmission over a Gaussian MAC. This system does not satisfy the source-channel separation. We study and compare three joint source-channel coding schemes available in literature. We show that each of these schemes is optimal under different scenarios. One of the schemes, Amplify and Forward (AF) which simplifies the design of encoders and the decoder, is optimal at low SNR but not at high SNR. Another scheme is asymptotically optimal at high SNR. The third coding scheme is optimal for orthogonal Gaussian channels. We also show that AF is close to the optimal scheme for orthogonal channels even at high SNR.

Joint Source-Channel Coding on a Multiple Access Channel with Side Information

We consider the problem of transmission of several distributed correlated sources over a multiple access channel (MAC) with side information at the sources and the decoder. Source-channel separation does not hold for this channel. Sufficient conditions are provided for transmission of sources with a given distortion. The source and/or the channel could have continuous alphabets (thus Gaussian sources and Gaussian MACs are special cases). Various previous results are obtained as special cases. We also provide several good joint source-channel coding schemes for discrete sources and discrete/continuous alphabet channel.

Efficient Energy Management Policies for Networks with Energy Harvesting Sensor Nodes

We study sensor networks with energy harvesting nodes. The generated energy at a node can be stored in a buffer. A sensor node periodically senses a random field and generates a packet. These packets are stored in a queue and transmitted using the energy available at that time at the node. For such networks we develop efficient energy management policies. First, for a single node, we obtain policies that are throughput optimal, i.e., the data queue stays stable for the largest possible data rate. Next we obtain energy management policies which minimize the mean delay in the queue. We also compare performance of several easily implementable suboptimal policies. A greedy policy is identified which, in low SNR regime, is throughput optimal and also minimizes mean delay. Next using the results for a single node, we develop efficient MAC policies.

An Efficient Algorithm for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks

We consider the problem of Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Systems. We have developed a distributed algorithm that the Secondary users can run to sense the channel cooperatively. It is based on sequential detection algorithms which optimally use the past observations. We use the algorithm on secondary users with energy detectors although it can be used with matched filter and other spectrum sensing algorithms also. The algorithm provides very low detection delays and also consumes little energy. Furthermore it causes low interference to the primary users. We compare this algorithm to several recently proposed algorithms and show that it detects changes in spectrum faster than these algorithms and uses significantly less energy.
