Rapid data quality investigations of gravitational-wave events with the Data Quality Report Builder toolkit

We present the Data Quality Report Builder toolkit, DQRbuild, a suite of data quality tools that have been developed to vet gravitational-wave events in preparation for the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run. We explain the main functionality and the many scientific tests that we support. To validate the performance of the tools included in the toolkit, we run a series of tests on all significant candidates shared as public alerts in the third observing run to compare against what was manually reported using human intervention. We find that these automated tools can now identify 96% of the problems identified by humans during this previous observing run, with a 24% false alarm rate. We conclude with a commentary on the prospects and potential challenges for fully automating the process of vetting the data quality for gravitational-wave events identified in future observing runs.

Enhancing online estimation of CBC parameters with the low-latency MBTA analysis

In this paper, we describe the procedure implemented in the Multi-Band Template Analysis (MBTA) search pipeline to produce online posterior distributions of compact binary coalescence (CBC) gravitational-wave parameters. This procedure relies on an SNR optimizer technique, which consists of filtering dense local template banks. We present how these banks are constructed using information from the initial detection and detail how the results of the filtering are used to estimate source parameters and provide posterior distributions. We demonstrate the performance of our procedure on simulations and compare our source parameter estimates with the results from the first part of the fourth observing run (O4a) recently released by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) collaboration.

Physics Briefing Book: Input for the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) reflects the vision and presents concrete plans of the European particle physics community for advancing human knowledge in fundamental physics. The ESPP is updated every five-to-six years through a community-driven process. It commences with the submission of specific proposals and other input from the community at large, outlining projects envisioned for the near-, mid-, and long-term future. All submitted contributions are evaluated by the Physics Preparatory Group (PPG), and a preliminary analysis is presented at a Symposium meant to foster a broad community discussion on the scientific value and feasibility of the various ideas proposed. The outcomes of the analysis and the deliberations at the Symposium are synthesized in the current Briefing Book, which provides an important input in the deliberations of the Strategy recommendations by the European Strategy Group (ESG).

Characterizing Low-Latency Sky Localization in Multi-Detector Gravitational-Wave Networks

Low-latency analyses of gravitational-wave (GW) data from LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA enable rapid detection of compact binary coalescences (CBC) and prompt sky localization, essential for electromagnetic follow-up in multi-messenger astronomy. We evaluate the performance and limitations of low-latency sky localization using BAYESTAR algorithm, and investigate the impact of low-significance Virgo triggers. We inject simulated CBC signals into Gaussian-stationary noise and into Virgo data from the second part of the third LIGO-Virgo observing run (O3b), then reconstruct skymaps across multiple detector network configurations. Localization accuracy is assessed using Percentile-Percentile plots, the Jaccard index, and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. Binary neutron star mergers are statistically consistent with ideal calibration, showing deviations below 3$σ$, particularly when Virgo is included in the network, whereas skymaps for neutron star--black hole and binary black hole mergers tend to be overconfident. Adding a third detector generally improves accuracy, but the searched area can degrade when Virgo's signal-to-noise ratio is low (SNR $\leq$ 5). For high-SNR events, relying on two detectors can mislocalize the source. Excluding Virgo can therefore cause the HL skymap to miss the true location when Virgo has strong antenna response, in such cases a three-detector configuration is required to recover the correct position and avoid misleading multi-messenger follow-up. We introduce diagnostics to flag problematic skymaps and apply them to O3 public alerts, recovering simulation-predicted trends and flagging a few anomalous morphologies. The results are relevant for improving rapid vetting of GW alerts and guiding observational strategies in multi-messenger astronomy.

The MBTA Pipeline for Detecting Compact Binary Coalescences in the Fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Observing Run

In this paper, we describe the Multi-Band Template Analysis (MBTA) search pipeline dedicated to the detection of compact binary coalescence (CBC) gravitational wave signals from the data obtained by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration (LVK) during the fourth observing run (O4), which started in May 2023. We give details on the configuration of the pipeline and its evolution compared to the third observing run (O3). We focus here on the configuration used for the offline results of the first part of the run (O4a), which are part of the GWTC-4 catalog (in preparation). We also give a brief summary of the online configuration and highlight some of the changes implemented or considered for the second part of O4 (O4b).

A Realistic Projection for Constraining Neutron Star Equation of State with the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Detector Network in the A+ Era

The LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA network in the upcoming A+ era with upgrades of both Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo will enable more frequent and precise observations of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers, improving constraints on the neutron star equation of state (EOS). In this study, we applied reduced order quadrature techniques for full parameter estimation of 3,000 simulated gravitational wave signals from BNS mergers at A+ sensitivity following three EOS models: HQC18, SLY230A, and MPA1. We found that tidal deformability tends to be overestimated at higher mass and underestimated at lower mass. We postprocessed the parameter estimation results to present our EOS recovery accuracies, identify biases within EOS constraints and their causes, and quantify the needed corrections.

Assessing the compact-binary merger candidates reported by the MBTA pipeline in the LIGO-Virgo O3 run: probability of astrophysical origin, classification, and associated uncertainties

We describe the method used by the Multi-Band Template Analysis (MBTA) pipeline to compute the probability of astrophysical origin, $p_{astro}$, of compact binary coalescence candidates in LIGO-Virgo data from the third observing run (O3). The calculation is performed as part of the offline analysis and is used to characterize candidate events, along with their source classification. The technical details and the implementation are described, as well as the results from the first half of the third observing run (O3a) published in GWTC-2.1. The performance of the method is assessed on injections of simulated gravitational-wave signals in O3a data using a parameterization of $p_{astro}$ as a function of the MBTA combined ranking statistic. Possible sources of statistical and systematic uncertainties are discussed, and their effect on $p_{astro}$ quantified.

The MBTA Pipeline for Detecting Compact Binary Coalescences in the Third LIGO-Virgo Observing Run

We describe the Multi-Band Template Analysis (MBTA) search for gravitational waves signals from coalescences of compact objects in the LIGO-Virgo data, at the time of the third observing run (2019-2020), both for low-latency detections and for offline analysis. Details are given on the architecture and functioning of the pipeline, including transient noise mitigation strategies, parameter space for the searched signals, detection of candidates and evaluation of a false alarm rate associated to them. The performance of the low-latency search is demonstrated based on the LIGO-Virgo third observing run, during which MBTA has contributed to 42 alerts, submitting candidates with a median latency of 36 seconds. The performance of the offline search is illustrated on a subset of data collected during the second LIGO-Virgo observation run in 2017, and are quantified based on injections of simulated signal events on the same data.

Point defects in IBS coating for very low loss mirrors

High reflective coatings are used in many physics experiments. Despite the high quality of the opticalcoating, the performances of the mirrors is altered by the scattered light induced by micrometers sizedefects in the coating layers. The topic of this paper is the study of the point-like scatterers present in thespecific coating of the mirrors used in state of the art, high sensitivity optical experiments. We studied thebehavior of the materials according to different thicknesses, and how the defects change after annealing. To our knowledge, this is a first insight into the formation of such defects for different materials andthickness and how this is reduced when samples are annealed.

Unitarity Triangle Analysis in the Standard Model and Beyond

Flavour physics represents a unique test bench for the Standard Model (SM). New analyses performed at the LHC experiments are now providing unprecedented insights into CKM metrology and new evidences for rare decays. The CKM picture can provide very precise SM predictions through global analyses. We present here the results of the latest global SM analysis performed by the UTfit collaboration including all the most updated inputs from experiments, lattice QCD and phenomenological calculations. In addition, the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis can be used to constrain the parameter space in possible new physics (NP) scenarios. We update here also the UT analysis beyond the SM by the UTfit collaboration. All of the available experimental and theoretical information on $ΔF=2$ processes is reinterpreted including a model-independent NP parametrisation. We determine the allowed NP contributions in the kaon, $D$, $B_d$, and $B_s$ sectors and, in various NP scenarios, we translate them into bounds for the NP scale as a function of NP couplings.

Lepton Flavour Violating top decays at the LHC

We consider lepton flavour violating decays of the top quark, mediated by four-fermion operators. We compile constraints on a complete set of SU(3)*U(1)-invariant operators, arising from their loop contributions to rare decays and from HERA's single top search. The bounds on e-mu flavour change are more restrictive than l-tau; nonetheless the top could decay to a jet $+ e \barμ$ with a branching ratio of order $10^{-3}$. We estimate that the currently available LHC data (20 inverse-fb at 8 TeV) could be sensitive to $BR(t \to e \barμ$+ jet) $ \sim 6\times 10^{-5}$, and extrapolate that 100 inverse-fb at 13 TeV could reach a sensitivity of $ \sim 1 \times 10^{-5}$.

Standard Model updates and new physics analysis with the Unitarity Triangle fit

We present here the update of the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis performed by the UTfit Collaboration within the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. Continuously updated flavour results contribute to improving the precision of several constraints and through the global fit of the CKM parameters and the SM predictions. We also extend the UT analysis to investigate new physics (NP) effects on $ΔF=2$ processes. Finally, based on the NP constraints, we derive upper bounds on the coefficients of the most general $ΔF=2$ effective Hamiltonian. These upper bounds can be translated into lower bounds on the scale of NP that contributes to these low-energy effective interactions.

Heavy Vector-like quark with charge 5/3 at the LHC

We study the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of an exotic vector-like quark X with charge +5/3. We relax the assumption of a 100% branching into W t and allow for an arbitrary rate into W plus light quarks, thus covering all possible scenarios. Sizeable decays into light quarks can be achieved, for instance, in a model where the X quark is embedded in a doublet with hypercharge 7/6, which also contains a t' quark. We study the bounds on the parameter space of this model, and perform a detailed simulation of the X pair production and decays. We show that the final state with W t W q, where q=u or c, contributes to the same sign dilepton searches, and that the reach can be improved with alternative cuts optimised on such final state.
