Evidence for $π$-shifted Cooper quartets and few-mode transport in PbTe nanowire three-terminal Josephson junctions

Josephson junctions are typically characterized by a single phase difference across two superconductors. This conventional two-terminal Josephson junction can be generalized to a multi-terminal device where the Josephson energy contains terms with contributions from multiple independent phase variables. Such multi-terminal Josephson junctions (MTJJs) are being considered as platforms for engineering effective Hamiltonians with non-trivial topologies, such as Weyl crossings and higher-order Chern numbers. These prospects rely on the ability to create MTJJs with non-classical multi-terminal couplings in which only a few quantum modes are populated. Here, we demonstrate these requirements in a three-terminal Josephson junction fabricated on selective-area-grown (SAG) PbTe nanowires. We observe signatures of a $π$-shifted Josephson effect, consistent with inter-terminal couplings mediated by four-particle quantum states called Cooper quartets. We further observe supercurrent co-existent with a non-monotonic evolution of the conductance with gate voltage, indicating transport mediated by a few quantum modes in both two- and three-terminal devices.

Effect of topological length on Bound states signatures in a Topological nanowire

Majorana bound states (MBS) at the end of nanowires have been proposed as one of the most important candidate for the topological qubits. However, similar tunneling conductance features for both the MBS and Andreev bound states (ABS) have turned out to be a major obstacle in the verification of the presence of MBS in semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. In this article, we use a protocol to probe properties specific to the MBS and use it to distinguish the topological zero-bias peak (ZBP) from a trivial one. For a scenario involving quantized ZBP in the nanowire, we propose a scheme wherein the length of the topological region in the wire is altered. The tunneling conductance signatures can then be utilized to gauge the impact on the energy of the low-energy states. We show that the topological and trivial ZBP behave differently under our protocol, in particular, the topological ZBP remains robust at zero bias throughout the protocol, while the trivial ZBP splits into two peaks at finite bias. This protocol probes the protection of near zero energy states due to their separable nature, allowing us to distinguish between topological and trivial ZBP.

Thermodynamic Properties of Ice: A Monte Carlo Study

In this text, we implement a monte carlo algorithm to study thermodynamic properties of ice. Our program, written in Python, is open-sourced and available at https://github.com/AKnightWing/ColdAsIce. We develop a novel scheme to compute the residual entropy of a two dimensional lattice model of ice at absolute zero. A model of energetic ice is also considered and its thermodynamic properties are studied with temperature. We report a remarkable result for the energetic ice model, the presence of a phase transition at non zero temperatures.
