Dynamics and entanglement in spherically symmetric quantum gravity

The gravity-scalar field system in spherical symmetry provides a natural setting for exploring gravitational collapse and its aftermath in quantum gravity. In a canonical approach, we give constructions of the Hamiltonian operator, and of semiclassical states peaked on constraint free data. Such states provide explicit examples of physical states. We also show that matter-gravity entanglement is an inherent feature of physical states, whether or not there is a black hole.

Ultraviolet behavior in background independent quantum field theory

We describe a background independent quantization of the scalar field that provides an explicit realization of Fock-like states and associated operators in a polymer Hilbert space. The vacuum expectation values of the commutator and anti-commutator of the creation and annihilation operators become energy dependent, and exhibit a surprising transition to fermionic behavior at high energy. Furthermore the approach yields a modified dispersion relation with a leading correction proportional to the momentum cubed. These results suggests a fundamental change in the ultraviolet properties of quantum fields.

Non-singular inflationary universe from polymer matter

We consider a polymer quantization of a free massless scalar field in a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological spacetime. This quantization method assumes that field translations are fundamentally discrete, and is related to but distinct from that used in loop quantum gravity. The semi-classical Friedman equation yields a universe that is non-singular and non-bouncing, without quantum gravity. The model has an early de Sitter-like inflationary phase with sufficient expansion to resolve the horizon and entropy problems, and a built in mechanism for a graceful exit from inflation.

Background independent quantization and wave propagation

We apply a type of background independent "polymer" quantization to a free scalar field in a flat spacetime. Using semi-classical states, we find an effective wave equation that is both nonlinear and Lorentz invariance violating. We solve this equation perturbatively for several cases of physical interest, and show that polymer corrections to solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation depend on the amplitude of the field. This leads to an effective dispersion relation that depends on the amplitude, frequency and shape of the wave-packet, and is hence distinct from other modified dispersion relations found in the literature. We also demonstrate that polymer effects tend to accumulate with time for plane-symmetric waveforms. We conclude by discussing the possibility of measuring deviations from the Klein-Gordon equation in particle accelerators or astrophysical observations.

Thermodynamics and phases in quantum gravity

We give an approach for studying quantum gravity effects on black hole thermodynamics. This combines a quantum framework for gravitational collapse with quasi-local definitions of energy and surface gravity. Our arguments suggest that (i) the specific heat of a black hole becomes positive after a phase transition near the Planck scale,(ii) its entropy acquires a logarithmic correction, and (iii) the mass loss rate is modified such that Hawking radiation stops near the Planck scale. These results are due essentially to a realization of fundamental discreteness in quantum gravity, and are in this sense potentially theory independent.

Time, vacuum energy, and the cosmological constant

We describe a link between the cosmological constant problem and the problem of time in quantum gravity. This arises by examining the relationship between the cosmological constant and vacuum energy in light of non-perturbative formulations of quantum gravity.

Critical behaviour in quantum gravitational collapse

We study the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous scalar field with quantum gravity corrections associated with singularity avoidance. Numerical simulations indicate that there is critical behaviour at the onset of black hole formation as in the classical theory, but with the difference that black holes form with a mass gap.

Ricci flows, wormholes and critical phenomena

We study the evolution of wormhole geometries under Ricci flow using numerical methods. Depending on values of initial data parameters, wormhole throats either pinch off or evolve to a monotonically growing state. The transition between these two behaviors exhibits a from of critical phenomena reminiscent of that observed in gravitational collapse. Similar results are obtained for initial data that describe space bubbles attached to asymptotically flat regions. Our numerical methods are applicable to "matter-coupled" Ricci flows derived from conformal invariance in string theory.

Gravitational collapse in quantum gravity

We give a review of recent work aimed at understanding the dynamics of gravitational collapse in quantum gravity. Its goal is to provide a non-perturbative computational framework for understanding the emergence of the semi-classical approximation and Hawking radiation. The model studied is the gravity-scalar field theory in spherical symmetry. A quantization of this theory is given in which operators corresponding to null expansions and curvature are well defined. Together with the Hamiltonian, these operators allow one to follow the evolution of an initial matter-geometry state to a trapped configuration and beyond, in a singularity free and unitary setting.

Quantum gravity and the Coulomb potential

We apply a singularity resolution technique utilized in loop quantum gravity to the polymer representation of quantum mechanics on R with the singular -1/|x| potential. On an equispaced lattice, the resulting eigenvalue problem is identical to a finite difference approximation of the Schrodinger equation. We find numerically that the antisymmetric sector has an energy spectrum that converges to the usual Coulomb spectrum as the lattice spacing is reduced. For the symmetric sector, in contrast, the effect of the lattice spacing is similar to that of a continuum self-adjointness boundary condition at x=0, and its effect on the ground state is significant even if the spacing is much below the Bohr radius. Boundary conditions at the singularity thus have a significant effect on the polymer quantization spectrum even after the singularity has been regularized.

Semiclassical states for quantum cosmology

In a metric variable based Hamiltonian quantization, we give a prescription for constructing semiclassical matter-geometry states for homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models. These "collective" states arise as infinite linear combinations of fundamental excitations in an unconventional "polymer" quantization. They satisfy a number of properties characteristic of semiclassicality, such as peaking on classical phase space configurations. We describe how these states can be used to determine quantum corrections to the classical evolution equations, and to compute the initial state of the universe by a backward time evolution.

Quantum Hamiltonian for gravitational collapse

Using a Hamiltonian formulation of the spherically symmetric gravity-scalar field theory adapted to flat spatial slicing, we give a construction of the reduced Hamiltonian operator. This Hamiltonian, together with the null expansion operators presented in an earlier work, form a framework for studying gravitational collapse in quantum gravity. We describe a setting for its numerical implementation, and discuss some conceptual issues associated with quantum dynamics in a partial gauge fixing.

Background independent duals of the harmonic oscillator

We show that a class of topological field theories are quantum duals of the harmonic oscillator. This is demonstrated by establishing a correspondence between the creation and annihilation operators and non-local gauge invariant observables of the topological field theory. The example is used to discuss some issues concerning background independence and the relation of vacuum energy to the problem of time in quantum gravity.

Quantum resolution of black hole singularities

We study the classical and quantum theory of spherically symmetric spacetimes with scalar field coupling in general relativity. We utilise the canonical formalism of geometrodynamics adapted to the Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates, and present a new quantisation of the resulting field theory. We give an explicit construction of operators that capture curvature properties of the spacetime and use these to show that the black hole curvature singularity is avoided in the quantum theory.

Quantum black holes from null expansion operators

Using a recently developed quantization of spherically symmetric gravity coupled to a scalar field, we give a construction of null expansion operators that allow a definition of general, fully dynamical quantum black holes. These operators capture the intuitive idea that classical black holes are defined by the presence of trapped surfaces, that is surfaces from which light cannot escape outward. They thus provide a mechanism for classifying quantum states of the system into those that describe quantum black holes and those that do not. We find that quantum horizons fluctuate, confirming long-held heuristic expectations. We also give explicit examples of quantum black hole states. The work sets a framework for addressing the puzzles of black hole physics in a fully quantized dynamical setting.

How red is a quantum black hole?

Radiating black holes pose a number of puzzles for semiclassical and quantum gravity. These include the transplanckian problem -- the nearly infinite energies of Hawking particles created near the horizon, and the final state of evaporation. A definitive resolution of these questions likely requires robust inputs from quantum gravity. We argue that one such input is a quantum bound on curvature. We show how this leads to an upper limit on the redshift of a Hawking emitted particle, to a maximum temperature for a black hole, and to the prediction of a Planck scale remnant.

Probing entropy bounds with scalar field spacetimes

We study covariant entropy bounds in dynamical spacetimes with naked singularities. Specifically we study a spherically symmetric massless scalar field solution. The solution is an inhomogeneous cosmology with an initial spacelike singularity, and a naked timelike singularity at the origin. We construct the entropy flux 4-vector for the scalar field, and show by explicit computation that the generalized covariant bound $S_{L(B,B')}\le (A(B)-A(B'))/4 $ is violated for light sheets $L(B,B')$ in the neighbourhood of the (evolving) apparent horizon. We find no violations of the Bousso bound (for which $A(B')=0$), even though certain sufficient conditions for this bound do not hold. This result therefore shows that these conditions are not necessary.

Anti-de Sitter black holes, perfect fluids, and holography

We consider asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in $d$-spacetime dimensions in the thermodynamically stable regime. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and its leading order corrections due to thermal fluctuations can be reproduced by a weakly interacting fluid of bosons and fermions (`dual gas') in $Δ=α(d-2)+1$ spacetime dimensions, where the energy-momentum dispersion relation for the constituents of the fluid is assumed to be $ε= κp^α$. We examine implications of this result for entropy bounds and the holographic hypothesis.
