An algorithm for approximating the metric projection onto a superelliptic disk

We study conditions under which the metric projection onto a strictly convex body can be approximated by the projections onto polygonal approximations (in the Hausdorff-Pompeiu sense) of the strictly convex body itself. We provide a necessary condition by proving that the union of all the vertices of the polygonal approximations must be dense in the boundary of that set. To showcase our result, given a superellipse (Lamé curve) of order p>1, we prove that a sequence of polygons obtained by radially projecting the torsion subgroup of the unit circle onto the superellipse, converges to the superellipse, in the Hausdorff-Pompeiu metric. Moreover, this leads to a globally convergent new algorithm useful in approximating the metric projection onto a superelliptic disk (the convex hull of a superellipse).

Short-term solar eclipse predictions using Euclidean geometry and dynamical systems

We propose a computationally inexpensive algorithm to determine whether an opaque spherical body eclipses a luminous one, using only classical geometrical tools. We apply this method to the Sun-Earth-Moon system and predict solar eclipses, including their type, beginning, and duration, using the three-body problem. For predictions over a one-year period, the resulting errors are in the order of minutes.

An exact sequence for the graded Picent

To a strongly $G$-graded algebra $A$ with $1$-component $B$ we associate the group $\mathrm{Picent}^{\mathrm{gr}}(A)$ of isomorphism classes of invertible $G$-graded $(A,A)$-bimodules over the centralizer of $B$ in $A$. Our main result is a $\mathrm{Picent}$ version of the Beattie-del R\'ıo exact sequence, involving Dade's group $G[B]$, which relates $\mathrm{Picent}^{\mathrm{gr}}(A)$, $\mathrm{Picent}(B)$, and group cohomology.
