Discrete spectrum of the magnetic Laplacian on perturbed half-planes

The existence of bound states for the magnetic Laplacian in unbounded domains can be quite challenging in the case of a homogeneous magnetic field. We provide an affirmative answer for almost flat corners and slightly curved half-planes when the total curvature of the boundary is positive.

Purely magnetic tunneling effect in two dimensions

The semiclassical magnetic Neumann Schrödinger operator on a smooth, bounded, and simply connected domain $Ω$ of the Euclidean plane is considered. When $Ω$ has a symmetry axis, the semiclassical splitting of the first two eigenvalues is analyzed. The first explicit tunneling formula in a pure magnetic field is established. The analysis is based on a pseudo-differential reduction to the boundary and the proof of the first known optimal purely magnetic Agmon estimates.

Asymptotic behavior of $u$-capacities and singular perturbations for the Dirichlet-Laplacian

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of $u$-capacities of small sets and its application to the analysis of the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian on a bounded planar domain with a small hole. More precisely, we consider two (sufficiently regular) bounded open connected sets $Ω$ and $ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$, containing the origin. First, if $\varepsilon$ is positive and small enough and if $u$ is a function defined on $Ω$, we compute an asymptotic expansion of the $u$-capacity $\mathrm{Cap}_Ω(\varepsilon ω, u)$ as $\varepsilon \to 0$. As a byproduct, we compute an asymptotic expansion for the $N$-th eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-Laplacian in the perforated set $Ω\setminus (\varepsilon \overlineω)$ for $\varepsilon$ close to $0$. Such formula shows explicitly the dependence of the asymptotic expansion on the behavior of the corresponding eigenfunction near $0$ and on the shape $ω$ of the hole.

Nodal domains, spectral minimal partitions, and their relation to Aharonov-Bohm operators

This survey is a short version of a chapter written by the first two authors in the book [A. Henrot, editor. Shape optimization and spectral theory. Berlin: De Gruyter, 2017] (where more details and references are given) but we have decided here to put more emphasis on the role of the Aharonov-Bohm operators which appear to be a useful tool coming from physics for understanding a problem motivated either by spectral geometry or dynamics of population. Similar questions appear also in Bose-Einstein theory. Finally some open problems which might be of interest are mentioned.

A Dirichlet problem for the Laplace operator in a domain with a small hole close to the boundary

We study the Dirichlet problem in a domain with a small hole close to the boundary. To do so, for each pair $\boldsymbol\varepsilon = (\varepsilon_1, \varepsilon_2 )$ of positive parameters, we consider a perforated domain $Ω_{\boldsymbol\varepsilon}$ obtained by making a small hole of size $\varepsilon_1 \varepsilon_2 $ in an open regular subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ at distance $\varepsilon_1$ from the boundary $\partialΩ$. As $\varepsilon_1 \to 0$, the perforation shrinks to a point and, at the same time, approaches the boundary. When $\boldsymbol\varepsilon \to (0,0)$, the size of the hole shrinks at a faster rate than its approach to the boundary. We denote by $u_{\boldsymbol\varepsilon}$ the solution of a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation in $Ω_{\boldsymbol\varepsilon}$. For a space dimension $n\geq 3$, we show that the function mapping $\boldsymbol\varepsilon$ to $u_{\boldsymbol\varepsilon}$ has a real analytic continuation in a neighborhood of $(0,0)$. By contrast, for $n=2$ we consider two different regimes: $\boldsymbol\varepsilon$ tends to $(0,0)$, and $\varepsilon_1$ tends to $0$ with $\varepsilon_2$ fixed. When $\boldsymbol\varepsilon\to(0,0)$, the solution $u_{\boldsymbol\varepsilon}$ has a logarithmic behavior; when only $\varepsilon_1\to0$ and $\varepsilon_2$ is fixed, the asymptotic behavior of the solution can be described in terms of real analytic functions of $\varepsilon_1$. We also show that for $n=2$, the energy integral and the total flux on the exterior boundary have different limiting values in the two regimes. We prove these results by using functional analysis methods in conjunction with certain special layer potentials.

A Dirichlet problem for the Laplace operator in a domain with a small hole close to the boundary

We take an open regular domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 3$. We introduce a pair of positive parameters $ε_1$ and $ε_2$ and we set $ε\equiv(ε_1,ε_2)$. Then we define the perforated domain $Ω_ε$ by making in $Ω$ a small hole of size $ε_1ε_2$ at distance $ε_1$ from the boundary. When $ε\rightarrow(0, 0)$, the hole approaches the boundary while its size shrinks at a faster rate. In $Ω_ε$ we consider a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation and we denote its solution by $u_ε$. By an approach based on functional analysis and on the introduction of special layer potentials we show that the map which takes $ε$ to (a restriction of) $u_ε$ has a real analytic continuation in a neighbourhood of $(0, 0)$.

Optimal partitions for the sum and the maximum of eigenvalues

In this paper we compare the candidates to be spectral minimal partitions for two criteria: the maximum and the average of the first eigenvalue on each subdomains of the partition. We analyze in detail the square, the disk and the equilateral triangle. Using numerical simulations, we propose candidates for the max, prove that most of them can not be optimal for the sum and then exhibit better candidates for the sum.

Spectral minimal partitions for a family of tori

We study partitions of the rectangular two-dimensional flat torus of length 1 and width b into k domains, with b a parameter in (0, 1] and k an integer. We look for partitions which minimize the energy, definedas the largest first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the domains of the partition. We are inparticular interested in the way these minimal partitions change when b is varied. We present herean improvement, when k is odd, of the results on transition values of b established by B. Helffer andT. Hoffmann-Ostenhof (2014) and state a conjecture on those transition values. We establishan improved upper bound of the minimal energy by explicitly constructing hexagonal tilings of thetorus. These tilings are close to the partitions obtained from a systematic numerical study based on an optimization algorithm adapted from B. Bourdin, D. Bucur, and {É}. Oudet (2009). These numerical results also support our conjecture concerning the transition values and give betterestimates near those transition values.

Magnetic Laplacian in sharp three dimensional cones

The core result of this paper is an upper bound for the ground state energyof the magnetic Laplacian with constant magnetic field on cones that are contained in ahalf-space. This bound involves a weighted norm of the magnetic field related to momentson a plane section of the cone. When the cone is sharp, i.e. when its section is small, thisupper bound tends to 0. A lower bound on the essential spectrum is proved for familiesof sharp cones, implying that if the section is small enough the ground state energy is aneigenvalue. This circumstance produces corner concentration in the semi-classical limit forthe magnetic Schrödinger operator when such sharp cones are involved.

Magnetic WKB Constructions

This paper is devoted to the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian. Until now WKB expansions for the eigenfunctions were only established in presence of a non-zero electric potential. Here we tackle the pure magnetic case. Thanks to Feynman-Hellmann type formulas and coherent states decomposition, we develop here a magnetic Born-Oppenheimer theory. Exploiting the multiple scales of the problem, we are led to solve an effective eikonal equation in pure magnetic cases and to obtain WKB expansions. We also investigate explicit examples for which we can improve our general theorem: global WKB expansions, quasi-optimal estimates of Agmon and upper bound of the tunelling effect (in symmetric cases). We also apply our strategy to get more accurate descriptions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a wide range of situations analyzed in the last two decades.

Ground state energy of the magnetic Laplacian on corner domains

The asymptotic behavior of the first eigenvalues of magnetic Laplacian operators with large magnetic fields and Neumann realization in smooth three-dimensional domains is characterized by model problems inside the domain or on its boundary. In two-dimensional polygonal domains, a new set of model problems on sectors has to be taken into account. In this paper, we consider the class of general corner domains. In dimension 3, they include as particular cases polyhedra and axisymmetric cones. We attach model problems not only to each point of the closure of the domain, but also to a hierarchy of "tangent substructures" associated with singular chains. We investigate properties of these model problems, namely continuity, semi-continuity, existence of generalized eigenfunctions satisfying exponential decay. We prove estimates for the remainders of our asymptotic formula. Lower bounds are obtained with the help of an IMS partition based on adequate two-scale coverings of the corner domain, whereas upper bounds are established by a novel construction of quasimodes, qualified as sitting or sliding according to spectral properties of local model problems. A part of our analysis extends to any dimension.

Semiclassical tunneling and magnetic flux effects on the circle

This paper is devoted to semiclassical tunneling estimates induced on the circle by a double well electric potential in the case when a magnetic field is added. When the two electric wells are connected by two geodesics for the Agmon distance, we highlight an oscillating factor (related to the circulation of the magnetic field) in the splitting estimate of the first two eigenvalues.

Interactions between moderately close inclusions for the 2D Dirichlet-Laplacian

This paper concerns the asymptotic expansion of the solution of the Dirichlet-Laplace problem in a domain with small inclusions. This problem is well understood for the Neumann condition in dimension greater than two or Dirichlet condition in dimension greater than three. The case of two circular inclusions in a bidimensional domain was considered in [1]. In this paper, we generalize the previous result to any shape and relax the assumptions of regularity and support of the data. Our approach uses conformal mapping and suitable lifting of Dirichlet conditions. We also analyze configurations with several scales for the distance between the inclusions (when the number is larger than 2).

Nodal and spectral minimal partitions -- The state of the art in 2015 --

In this article, we propose a state of the art concerning the nodal and spectral minimal partitions. First we focus on the nodal partitions and give some examples of Courant sharp cases. Then we are interested in minimal spectral partitions. Using the link with the Courant sharp situation, we can determine the minimal k-partitions for some particular domains. We also recall some results about the topology of regular partitions and Aharonov-Bohm approach. The last section deals with the asymptotic behavior of minimal k-partition.

Ground Energy of the Magnetic Laplacian in Polyhedral Bodies

The asymptotic behavior of the first eigenvalues of magnetic Laplacian operators with large magnetic fields and Neumann realization in polyhedral domains is characterized by a hierarchy of model problems. We investigate properties of the model problems (continuity, semi-continuity, existence of generalized eigenfunctions). We prove estimates for the remainders of our asymptotic formula. Lower bounds are obtained with the help of a classical IMS partition based on adequate coverings of the polyhedral domain, whereas upper bounds are established by a novel construction of quasimodes, qualified as sitting or sliding according to spectral properties of local model problems.

On the eigenvalues of Aharonov-Bohm operators with varying poles

We consider a magnetic operator of Aharonov-Bohm type with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a planar domain. We analyse the behavior of its eigenvalues as the singular pole moves in the domain. For any value of the circulation we prove that the k-th magnetic eigenvalue converges to the k-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian as the pole approaches the boundary. We show that the magnetic eigenvalues depend in a smooth way on the position of the pole, as long as they remain simple. In case of half-integer circulation, we show that the rate of convergence depends on the number of nodal lines of the corresponding magnetic eigenfunction. In addition, we provide several numerical simulations both on the circular sector and on the square, which find a perfect theoretical justification within our main results, together with the ones in [Bonnaillie-Noël, V., Helffer, B., Exp. Math. 20 (2011), no. 3, 304-322; MR2836255 (2012i:35274)].

Magnetic Neumann Laplacian on a sharp cone

This paper is devoted to the spectral analysis of the Laplacian with constant magnetic field on a cone of aperture $α$ and Neumann boundary condition. We analyze the influence of the orientation of the magnetic field. In particular, for any orientation of the magnetic field, we prove the existence of discrete spectrum below the essential spectrum in the limit $α\to 0$ and establish a full asymptotic expansion for the $n$-th eigenvalue and the $n$-th eigenfunction.
