Positive-tone Nanolithography of Antimony Trisulfide with Femtosecond Laser Wet-etching

Antimony trisulfide ($Sb_{2}S_{3}$), as an emerging material for integrated photonic devices, has attracted significant attention due to its high index, low loss, and phase-changing property in the optical regime. However, conventional lithography-based fabrication methods involve complex, time-consuming, multistep processes, rendering the photonic application of $Sb_{2}S_{3}$ challenging. Here, we demonstrate that positive-tone fabrication of $Sb_{2}S_{3}$ nanostructures using wet-etch femtosecond laser processing, a straightforward technique for the engraving of micro- and nanoscale structures, can address major fabrication challenges. The patterning mechanism and factors influencing resolution of $Sb_{2}S_{3}$ thin film structures deposited on quartz (transmissive) and gold (reflective) substrates are experimentally investigated and supported by theoretical modelling. Using this approach, the smallest linewidth fabricated is measured at 178 nm. Consequently, multiple test patterns are demonstrated showing versatile functionalities. Functional Fresnel Zone Plates (FZPs) with varying focal length are fabricated and characterized. This study provides a significantly simplified approach for realizing $Sb_{2}S_{3}$ based integrated photonic devices.

Photo-Writable Sulfide Glasses Used to Fabricate Core-Clad Fiber Doped with Pr$^{3+}$ for Mid-IR Luminescence

With the ultimate goal of developing rare-earth doped chalcogenide fiber fabrication for sensing, amplification, and laser applications, a core/clad germanium-gallium sulfide fiber doped with Pr$^{3+}$ has been fabricated. The compositions of the core and the clad were selected to ensure the positive $Δ$n by adding CdI$_2$ and CsCl, respectively, in the GeS$_2$ -Ga$_2$S$_3$ matrix. The choice of these compositions was also justified from experimental parameters, including characteristic temperatures and viscosity. Moreover, the permanent photo writability of the sulfide glass family by a femtosecond laser is investigated from the perspective of Bragg grating photo-inscription. Structural investigations by Raman spectroscopy are presented and the effect of the Pr$^{3+}$ rare-earth ion on the structure is underlined. Finally, the emission of the step-index fiber, made by the rod-in-tube technique between 3.1 $μ$m and 5.5 $μ$m (by pumping at 1.55 $μ$m), is demonstrated.

Experimental demonstration of plasmon-soliton waves

Controlling low power light beam self-confinement with ultrafast response time opens up opportunities for the development of signal processing in microdevices. The combination of highly nonlinear medium with the tight confinement of plasmonic waves offers a viable but challenging configuration to reach this goal. Here, we report the experimental observation of plasmon-soliton waves propagating in a chalcogenide-based four-layer planar geometry engineered to limit plasmon propagation losses while exhibiting efficient Kerr self-focusing at moderate power. The observations reveal a strongly enhanced self-focusing undergone by a self-trapped beam propagating inside the structure. As expected, only TM polarized waves exhibit such a behavior. Different experimental arrangements are tested that unambiguously reveal the nonlinear plasmon-soliton coupling which is corroborated by numerical simulations.

The structure of near stoichiometric Ge-Ga-Sb-S glasses: a reverse Monte Carlo study

The structure of Ge$_{22}$Ga$_3$Sb$_{10}$S$_{65}$ and Ge$_{15}$Ga$_{10}$Sb$_{10}$S$_{65}$ glasses was investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge, Ga and Sb K-edges. Experimental data sets were fitted simultaneously in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. Short range order parameters were determined from the obtained large-scale configurations. It was found that the coordination numbers of Ge, Sb and S are around the values predicted by the Mott-rule (4, 3 and 2, respectively). The Ga atoms have on average 4 nearest neighbors. The structure of these stoichiometric glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: Ge-S, Ga-S and Sb-S bonds are the most important. Long Sb-S distances (0.3 - 0.4 Å higher than the usual covalent bond lengths) are observed, suggesting that Sb atoms can be found in various local environments.

Atomic level structure of Ge-Sb-S glasses: chemical short range order and long Sb-S bonds

The structure of Ge$_{20}$Sb$_{10}$S$_{70}$, Ge$_{23}$Sb$_{12}$S$_{65}$ and Ge$_{26}$Sb$_{13}$S$_{61}$ glasses was investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge and Sb K-edges as well as Raman scattering. For each composition, large scale structural models were obtained by fitting simultaneously diffraction and EXAFS data sets in the framework of the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. Ge and S atoms have 4 and 2 nearest neighbors, respectively. The structure of these glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: Ge-S and Sb-S bonds are always preferred. These two bond types adequately describe the structure of the stoichiometric glass while S-S bonds can also be found in the S-rich composition. Raman scattering data show the presence of Ge-Ge, Ge-Sb and Sb-Sb bonds in the S-deficient glass but only Ge-Sb bonds are needed to fit diffraction and EXAFS datasets. A significant part of the Sb-S pairs has 0.3-0.4 Å longer bond distance than the usually accepted covalent bond length (~2.45 Å). From this observation it was inferred that a part of Sb atoms have more than 3 S neighbors.

Chemical order in Ge-Ga-Sb-Se glasses

The short range order in Ge$_{30}$Ga$_{5}$Sb$_{10}$Se$_{55}$ and Ge$_{21}$Ga$_{5}$Sb$_{10}$Se$_{64}$ glasses was investigated by X-ray (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) as well as extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ge, Ga, Sb and Se K-edges. Large scale structural models were obtained by fitting simultaneously the experimental data sets by reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation technique. It was found that Ge, Sb and Se atoms follow the Mott-rule and have 4, 3 and 2 nearest neighbors, respectively. The average coordination number of the Ga atoms was around 4. The structure of these glasses can be described by the chemically ordered network model: the Ge-Se, Ga-Se and Sb-Se bonds are the most prominent while Ge-Ge and Ge-Sb bonds are formed only in Se-poor compositions. Models generated by RMC contained some long distances (0.3-0.4 Å higher than the usual covalent bond lengths) between Ge-Se and/or Ge-Ge pairs. Dedicated simulation runs confirm the existence of these bonds.

Local motifs in GeS$_2$-Ga$_2$S$_3$ glasses

The structure of (GeS$_2$)$_{0.75}$(Ga$_2$S$_3$)$_{0.25}$ and (GeS$_2$)$_{0.83}$(Ga$_2$S$_3$)$_{0.17}$ glasses was investigated by Raman scattering, high energy X-ray diffraction and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements at the Ga and Ge K-edges. The reverse Monte Carlo simulation technique (RMC) was used to obtain structural models compatible with diffraction and EXAFS datasets. It was found that the coordination number of Ga is close to four. While Ge atoms have only S neighbors, Ga binds to S as well as to Ga atoms showing a violation of chemical ordering in GeS$_2$-Ga$_2$S$_3$ glasses. Analysis of the corner- and edge-sharing between [GeS$_{4/2}$] units revealed that about 30% of germanium atoms participate in the edge-shared tetrahedra.

Improved nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguide: a full study

We present a full study of an improved nonlinear plasmonic slot waveguides (NPSWs) in which buffer linear dielectric layers are added between the Kerr type nonlinear dielectric core and the two semi-infinite metal regions. For TM polarized waves, the inclusion of these supplementary layers have two consequences. First, they reduced the overall losses. Secondly, they modify the types of solutions that propagate in the NPSWs adding new profiles enlarging the possibilities offered by these nonlinear waveguides. Our structure also provides longer propagation length due to the decrease of the losses compared to the simple nonlinear slot waveguide and exhibits, for well-chosen refractive index or thickness of the buffer layer, a spatial transition of its main modes that can be controlled by the power. We provide a full phase diagram of the TM wave operating regimes of these improved NPSWs. The stability of the main TM modes is then demonstrated numerically using the FDTD. We also demonstrate the existence of TE waves for both linear and nonlinear cases (for some configurations) in which the maximum intensity is located in the middle of the waveguide. This kind of structures could be fabricated and characterized experimentally due to the realistic parameters chosen to model them.
