Doubly isogenous genus-2 curves with $D_4$-action

We study the extent to which curves over finite fields are characterized by their zeta functions and the zeta functions of certain of their covers. Suppose C and C' are curves over a finite field K, with K-rational base points P and P', and let D and D' be the pullbacks (via the Abel-Jacobi map) of the multiplication-by-2 maps on their Jacobians. We say that (C,P) and (C',P') are *doubly isogenous* if Jac(C) and Jac(C') are isogenous over K and Jac(D) and Jac(D') are isogenous over K. For curves of genus 2 whose automorphism groups contain the dihedral group of order eight, we show that the number of pairs of doubly isogenous curves is larger than naive heuristics predict, and we provide an explanation for this phenomenon.

Rational points on $X^+_0(125)$

We compute the rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotient $X^+_0(125)$ using the quadratic Chabauty method. Our work completes the study of exceptional rational points on the curves $X^+_0(N)$ of genus between 2 and 6. Together with the work of several authors, this completes the proof of a conjecture of Galbraith.

Quadratic Chabauty for Atkin-Lehner Quotients of Modular Curves of Prime Level and Genus 4, 5, 6

We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.

Division by $1-ζ$ on superelliptic curves and jacobians

In 2016, Yuri Zarhin gave formulas for "dividing a point on a hyperelliptic curve by 2." Given a point $P$ on a hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal{C}$, Zarhin gives the Mumford's representation of every degree $g$ divisor $D$ such that $2(D - g \infty) \sim P - \infty$. The aim of this paper is to generalize Zarhin's result to the superelliptic situation; instead of dividing by 2, we divide by $1 - ζ$. Even though there is no Mumford's representation for superelliptic curves, we give a formula for functions which cut out $D$.

On the $\ell$-adic valuation of certain Jacobi sums

Fix distinct primes $\ell$ and $f$, a finite field $\mathbf{F}_{q}$ such that $q \equiv 1 \pmod{\ell f}$, and a character $χ: \mathbf{F}_{q}^{\times} \to \mathbf{C}^{\times}$ of exact order $\ell f$. We present a new $\ell$-adic congruence for the Jacobi sum $J(χ^{\ell}, χ^{f})$. These Jacobi sums are Frobenius eigenvalues of the curve $y^{\ell} = x^{f} + 1$.

Torsion points on Fermat quotients of the form $y^n = x^d + 1$

We classify all geometric torsion points on the Fermat quotients $y^n = x^d + 1$ where $n, d \ge 2$ are coprime. In addition, we classify all geometric torsion points on the generic superelliptic curve $y^n = (x - a_1) \cdots (x - a_d)$, extending a result of Poonen and Stoll, who considered the hyperelliptic $n = 2$ case.

Computing Zeta Functions of Cyclic Covers in Large Characteristic

We describe an algorithm to compute the zeta function of a cyclic cover of the projective line over a finite field of characteristic $p$ that runs in time $p^{1/2 + o(1)}$. We confirm its practicality and effectiveness by reporting on the performance of our SageMath implementation on a range of examples. The algorithm relies on Gonçalves's generalization of Kedlaya's algorithm for cyclic covers, and Harvey's work on Kedlaya's algorithm for large characteristic.
