Precise tail behavior of some Dirichlet series

Let $η_1$, $η_2,\ldots$ be independent copies of a random variable $η$ with zero mean and finite variance which is bounded from the right, that is, $η\leq b$ almost surely for some $b>0$. Considering different types of the asymptotic behaviour of the probability $\mathbb{P}\{η\in[b-x,b]\}$ as $x\to 0+$ we derive precise tail asymptotics of the random Dirichlet series $\sum_{k\geq 1}k^{-α}η_k$ for $α\in (1/2, 1]$.

At the Edge of Criticality: Markov Chains with Asymptotically Zero Drift

The main goal of this text is comprehensive study of time homogeneous Markov chains on the real line whose drift tends to zero at infinity, we call such processes Markov chains with asymptotically zero drift. Traditionally this topic is referred to as Lamperti's problem. Time homogeneous Markov chains with asymptotically zero drift may be viewed as a subclass of perturbed in space random walks. The latter are of basic importance in the study of various applied stochastic models, among them branching and risk processes, queueing systems etc. Random walks generated by sums of independent identically distributed random variables are well studied, see e.g. classical textbooks by W. Feller (1971), V.V. Petrov (1975), or F. Spitzer (1964); for the recent development of the theory of random walks we refer to A.A. Borovkov and K.A. Borovkov (2008). There are many monographs devoted to various applications where random walks play a crucial role, let us just mention books on ruin and queueing processes by S. Asmussen (2000, 2003); on insurance and finance by P. Embrechts, C. Kluppelberg, and T. Mikosch (1997), and T. Rolski, H. Schmidli, V. Schmidt, and J. Teugels (1998); and on stochastic difference equations by D. Buraczewski, E. Damek and T. Mikosch (2016). In the same applied stochastic models, if one allows the process considered to be dependent on the current state of the process, we often get a Markov chain which has asymptotically zero drift, we demonstrate that in the last chapter, where we particularly discuss branching and risk processes, stochastic difference equations and ALOHA network.

Harmonic measure in a multidimensional gambler's problem

We consider a random walk in a truncated cone $K_N$, which is obtained by slicing cone $K$ by a hyperplane at a growing level of order $N$. We study the behaviour of the Green function in this truncated cone as $N$ increases. Using these results we also obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic measure. The obtained results are applied to a multidimensional gambler's problem studied by Diaconis and Ethier (2022). In particular we confirm their conjecture that the probability of eliminating players in a particular order has the same exact asymptotic behaviour as for the Brownian motion approximation. We also provide a rate of convergence of this probability towards this approximation.

Green function for an asymptotically stable random walk in a half space

We consider an asymptotically stable multidimensional random walk $S(n)=(S_1(n),\ldots, S_d(n) )$. Let $τ_x:=\min\{n>0: x_{1}+S_1(n)\le 0\}$ be the first time the random walk $S(n)$ leaves the upper half-space. We obtain the asymptotics of $p_n(x,y):= P(x+S(n) \in y+Δ, τ_x>n)$ as $n$ tends to infinity, where $Δ$ is a fixed cube. From that we obtain the local asymptotics for the Green function $G(x,y):=\sum_n p_n(x,y)$, as $|y|$ and/or $|x|$ tend to infinity.

Persistence of autoregressive sequences with logarithmic tails

We consider autoregressive sequences $X_n=aX_{n-1}+ξ_n$ and $M_n=\max\{aM_{n-1},ξ_n\}$ with a constant $a\in(0,1)$ and with positive, independent and identically distributed innovations $\{ξ_k\}$. It is known that if $\mathbf P(ξ_1>x)\sim\frac{d}{\log x}$ with some $d\in(0,-\log a)$ then the chains $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ are null recurrent. We investigate the tail behaviour of recurrence times in this case of logarithmically decaying tails. More precisely, we show that the tails of recurrence times are regularly varying of index $-1-d/\log a$. We also prove limit theorems for $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ conditioned to stay over a fixed level $x_0$. Furthermore, we study tail asymptotics for recurrence times of $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ in the case when these chains are positive recurrent and the tail of $\logξ_1$ is subexponential.

Random walks in cones revisited

In this paper we continue our study of a multidimensional random walk with zero mean and finite variance killed on leaving a cone. We suggest a new approach that allows one to construct a positive harmonic function in Lipschitz cones under minimal moment conditions. This approach allows one also to obtain more accurate information about the behaviour of the harmonic function not far from the boundary of the cone. We also prove limit theorems under new moment conditions.

First-passage times for random walks in the triangular array setting

In this paper we continue our study of exit times for random walks with independent but not necessarily identical distributed increments. Our paper "First-passage times for random walks with non-identically distributed increments" was devoted to the case when the random walk is constructed by a fixed sequence of independent random variables which satisfies the classical Lindeberg condition. Now we consider a more general situation when we have a triangular array of independent random variables. Our main assumption is that the entries of every row are uniformly bounded by a constant, which tends to zero as the number of the row increases.

Invariance principles for integrated random walks conditioned to stay positive

Let $S(n)$ be a centered random walk with finite second moment. We consider the integrated random walk $T(n) = S(0)+S(1)+\dots+S(n)$. We prove invariance principles for the meander and for the bridge of this process, under the condition that the integrated random walk remains positive. Furthermore, we prove the functional convergence of its Doob's $h$-transform to the $h$-transform of the Kolmogorov diffusion conditioned to stay positive.

Invariance principle for a Potts interface along a wall

We consider nearest-neighbor two-dimensional Potts models, with boundary conditions leading to the presence of an interface along the bottom wall of the box. We show that, after a suitable diffusive scaling, the interface weakly converges to the standard Brownian excursion.

Renewal Theory for Transient Markov Chains with Asymptotically Zero Drift

We solve the problem of asymptotic behaviour of the renewal measure (Green function) generated by a transient Lamperti's Markov chain $X_n$ in $\mathbf R$, that is, when the drift of the chain tends to zero at infinity. Under this setting, the average time spent by $X_n$ in the interval $(x,x+1]$ is roughly speaking the reciprocal of the drift and tends to infinity as $x$ grows. For the first time we present a general approach relying in a diffusion approximation to prove renewal theorems for Markov chains. We apply a martingale type technique and show that the asymptotic behaviour of the renewal measure heavily depends on the rate at which the drift vanishes. The two main cases are distinguished, either the drift of the chain decreases as $1/x$ or much slower than that, say as $1/x^α$ for some $α\in(0,1)$. The intuition behind how the renewal measure behaves in these two cases is totally different. While in the first case $X_n^2/n$ converges weakly to a $Γ$-distribution and there is no law of large numbers available, in the second case a strong law of large numbers holds true for $X_n^{1+α}/n$ and further normal approximation is available.

Martin boundary of random walks in convex cones

We determine the asymptotic behavior of the Green function for zero-drift random walks confined to multidimensional convex cones. As a consequence, we prove that there is a unique positive discrete harmonic function for these processes (up to a multiplicative constant); in other words, the Martin boundary reduces to a singleton.

Local tail asymptotics for the joint distribution of length and of maximum of a random walk excursion

This note is devoted to the study of the maximum of the excursion of a random walk with negative drift and light-tailed increments. More precisely, we determine the local asymptotics of the joint distribution of the length, maximum and the time at which this maximum is achieved. This result allows one to obtain a local central limit theorems for the length of the excursion conditioned on large values of the maximum.

Tightness and Line Ensembles for Brownian Polymers under Geometric Area Tilts

We prove tightness and limiting Brownian-Gibbs description for line ensembles of non-colliding Brownian bridges above a hard wall, which are subject to geometrically growing self-potentials of tilted area type. Statistical properties of the resulting ensemble are very different from that of non-colliding Brownian bridges without self-potentials. The model itself was introduced in order to mimic level lines of (2+1)-dimensional discrete Solid-On-Solid random interfaces above a hard wall.

Alternative constructions of a harmonic function for a random walk in a cone

For a random walk killed at leaving a cone we suggest two new constructions of a positive harmonic function. These constructions allow one to remove a quite strong extendability assumption, which has been imposed in our previous paper (Denisov and Wachtel, 2015, Random walks in cones). As a consequence, all the limit results from that paper remain true for cones which are either convex or star-like and $C^2$.

Confinement of Brownian Polymers under Geometric Area Tilts

We consider tightness for families of non-colliding Brownian bridges above a hard wall, which are subject to geometrically growing self-potentials of tilted area type. The model is introduced in order to mimic level lines of $2+1$ discrete Solid-On-Solid random interfaces above a hard wall.

Persistence of one-dimensional AR(1)-sequences

For a class of one-dimensional autoregressive processes $(X_n)$ we consider the tail behaviour of the stopping time $T_0=\min \lbrace n\geq 1: X_n\leq 0 \rbrace$. We discuss existing general analytical approaches to this and related problems and propose a new one, which is based on a renewal-type decomposition for the moment generating function of $T_0$ and on the analytical Fredholm alternative. Using this method, we show that $\mathbb{P}_x(T_0=n)\sim V(x)R_0^n$ for some $0<R_0<1$ and a positive $R^{-1}_0$-harmonic function $V$. Further we prove that our conditions on the tail behaviour of the innovations are sharp in the sense that fatter tails produce non-exponential decay factors.

Green function of a random walk in a cone

This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the Green function of a multidimensional random walk killed when leaving a convex cone with smooth boundary. Our results imply uniqueness, up to a multiplicative factor, of the positive harmonic function for the killed random walk.
