Large deviations bound for semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base

We obtain a exponential large deviation upper bound for continuous observables on suspension semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base transformation with non-flat singularities or criticalities, where the roof function defining the suspension behaves like the logarithm of the distance to the singular/critical set of the base map. That is, given a continuous function we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare this with the time averages along orbits of the semiflow, showing that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from the space average tends to zero exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. Suspension semiflows model the dynamics of flows admitting cross-sections, where the dynamics of the base is given by the Poincaré return map and the roof function is the return time to the cross-section. The results are applicable in particular to semiflows modeling the geometric Lorenz attractors and the Lorenz flow, as well as other semiflows with multidimensional non-uniformly expanding base with non-flat singularities and/or criticalities under slow recurrence rate conditions to this singular/critical set.

Stochastic stability of diffeomorphisms with dominated splitting

We prove that the statistical properties of random perturbations of a nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphism are described by a finite number of stationary measures. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the stochastic stability of such dynamical systems. We show that a certain $C^2$-open class of nonuniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [Alves, J; Bonatti, C. and Viana, V., SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems with mostly expanding central direction, Invent. Math., 140 (2000), 351-398] are stochastically stable. Our setting encompasses that of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms as well. Moreover, the techniques used enable us to obtain SRB measures in this setting through zero-noise limit measures.

Singular-hyperbolic attractors are chaotic

We prove that a singular-hyperbolic attractor of a 3-dimensional flow is chaotic, in two strong different senses. Firstly, the flow is expansive: if two points remain close for all times, possibly with time reparametrization, then their orbits coincide. Secondly, there exists a physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measure supported on the attractor whose ergodic basin covers a full Lebesgue (volume) measure subset of the topological basin of attraction. Moreover this measure has absolutely continuous conditional measures along the center-unstable direction, is a $u$-Gibbs state and an equilibrium state for the logarithm of the Jacobian of the time one map of the flow along the strong-unstable direction. This extends to the class of singular-hyperbolic attractors the main elements of the ergodic theory of uniformly hyperbolic (or Axiom A) attractors for flows.

Semicontinuity of entropy, existence of equilibrium states and continuity of physical measures

We obtain some results of existence and continuity of physical measures through equilibrium states and apply these to non-uniformly expanding transformations on compact manifolds with non-flat critical sets, obtaining sufficient conditions for continuity of physical measures and, for local diffeomorphisms, necessary and sufficient conditions for stochastic stability. In particular we show that, under certain conditions, stochastically robust non-uniform expansion implies existence and continuous variation of physical measures.

Random Dynamical Systems

The concept of random dynamical system is a comparatively recent development combining ideas and methods from the well developed areas of probability theory and dynamical systems. Due to our inaccurate knowledge of the particular physical system or due to computational or theoretical limitations (lack of sufficient computational power, inefficient algorithms or insufficiently developed mathematical or physical theory, for example), the mathematical models never correspond exactly to the phenomenon they are meant to model. Moreover when considering practical systems we cannot avoid either external noise or measurement or inaccuracy errors, so every realistic mathematical model should allow for small errors along orbits not to disturb too much the long term behavior. To be able to cope with unavoidable uncertainty about the ``correct'' parameter values, observed initial states and even the specific mathematical formulation involved, we let randomness be embedded within the model to begin with. We present the most basic classes of models in what follows, then define the general concept and present some developments and examples of applications.

Attractors and Time Averages for Random Maps

Considering random noise in finite dimensional parameterized families of diffeomorphisms of a compact finite dimensional boundaryless manifold M, we show the existence of time averages for almost every orbit of each point of M, imposing mild conditions on the families. Moreover these averages are given by a finite number of physical absolutely continuous stationary probability measures. We use this result to deduce that situations with infinitely many sinks and Henon-like attractors are not stable under random perturbations, e.g., Newhouse's and Colli's phenomena in the generic unfolding of a quadratic homoclinic tangency by a one-parameter family of diffeomorphisms.

Hyperbolic times: frequency versus integrability

We consider dynamical systems on compact manifolds, which are local diffeomorphisms outside an exceptional set (a compact submanifold). We are interested in analyzing the relation between the integrability (with respect to Lebesgue measure) of the first hyperbolic time map and the existence of positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We show that some (strong) integrability of the first hyperbolic time map implies the existence of a positive Lebesgue measure subset of points with positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We also present an example of a map with positive frequency of hyperbolic times at Lebesgue almost every point but whose first hyperbolic time map is not integrable with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Infinitely Many Stochastically Stable Attractors

Let f be a diffeomorphism of a compact finite dimensional boundaryless manifold M exhibiting infinitely many coexisting attractors. Assume that each attractor supports a stochastically stable probability measure and that the union of the basins of attraction of each attractor covers Lebesgue almost all points of M. We prove that the time averages of almost all orbits under random perturbations are given by a finite number of probability measures. Moreover these probability measures are close to the probability measures supported by the attractors when the perturbations are close to the original map f.

Statistical stability of saddle-node arcs

We study the dynamics of generic unfoldings of saddle-node circle local diffeomorphisms from the measure theoretical point of view, obtaining statistical stability results for deterministic and random perturbations in these kind of one-parameter families.

Integrability versus frequency of hyperbolic times and the existence of a.c.i.m

We consider dynamical systems on compact manifolds, which are local diffeomorphisms outside an exceptional set (a compact submanifold). We are interested in analyzing the relation between the integrability (with respect to Lebesgue measure) of the first hyperbolic time map and the existence of positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We show that some (strong) integrability of the first hyperbolic time map implies positive frequency of hyperbolic times. We also present an example of a map with positive frequency of hyperbolic times at Lebesgue almost every point but whose first hyperbolic time map is not integrable with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Stochastic stability at the boundary of expanding maps

We consider endomorphisms of a compact manifold which are expanding except for a finite number of points and prove the existence and uniqueness of a physical measure and its stochastical stability. We also characterize the zero-noise limit measures for a model of the intermittent map and obtain stochastic stability for some values of the parameter. The physical measures are obtained as zero-noise limits which are shown to satisfy Pesin?s Entropy Formula.

Random perturbations of codimension one homoclinic tangencies in dimension 3

Adding small random parametric noise to an arc of diffeomophisms of a manifold of dimension 3, generically unfolding a codimension one quadratic homoclinic tangency q associated to a sectionally dissipative saddle fixed point p, we obtain not more than a finite number of physical probability measures, whose ergodic basins cover the orbits which are recurrent to a neighborhood of the tangency point $q$. This result is in contrast to the extension of Newhouse's phenomenon of coexistence of infinitely many sinks obtained by Palis and Viana in this setting. There is a similar result for the simpler bidimensional case whose proof relies on geometric arguments. We now extend the arguments to cover three dimensional manifolds.

On the uniform hyperbolicity of some nonuniformly hyperbolic systems

We give sufficient conditions for the uniform hyperbolicity of certain nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. In particular, we show that local diffeomorphisms that are nonuniformly expanding on sets of total probability are necessarily uniformly expanding. We also present a version of this result for diffeomorphisms with nonuniformly hyperbolic sets.

Random perturbations of non-uniformly expanding maps

We give both sufficient conditions and necessary conditions for the stochastic stability of non-uniformly expanding maps either with or without critical sets. We also show that the number of probability measures describing the statistical asymptotic behaviour of random orbits is bounded by the number of SRB measures if the noise level is small enough. As an application of these results we prove the stochastic stability of certain classes of non-uniformly expanding maps introduced in \cite{V} and \cite{ABV}.
