Quantum Private Queries: security analysis

We present a security analysis of the recently introduced Quantum Private Query (QPQ) protocol. It is a cheat sensitive quantum protocol to perform a private search on a classical database. It allows a user to retrieve an item from the database without revealing which item was retrieved, and at the same time it ensures data privacy of the database (the information that the user can retrieve in a query is bounded and does not depend on the size of the database). The security analysis is based on information-disturbance tradeoffs which show that whenever the provider tries to obtain information on the query, the query (encoded into a quantum system) is disturbed so that the person querying the database can detect the privacy violation.

Spin chain model for correlated quantum channels

We analyze the quality of the quantum information transmission along a correlated quantum channel by studying the average fidelity between input and output states and the average output purity, giving bounds for the entropy of the channel. Noise correlations in the channel are modeled by the coupling of each channel use with an element of a one dimensional interacting quantum spin chain. Criticality of the environment chain is seen to emerge in the changes of the fidelity and of the purity.

Qubit channels with small correlations

We introduce a class of quantum channels with correlations acting on pairs of qubits, where the correlation takes the form of a shift operator onto a maximally entangled state. We optimise the output purity and show that below a certain threshold the optimum is achieved by partially entangled states whose degree of entanglement increases monotonically with the correlation parameter. Above this threshold, the optimum is achieved by the maximally entangled state characterizing the shift. Although, a full analysis can only be done for the 2-norm, both numerical and heuristic arguments indicate that this behavior and the optimal inputs are independent of p>1 when the optimal output purity is measured using the p-norm.

Sub-Rayleigh Quantum Imaging

No imaging apparatus can produce perfect images: spatial resolution is limited by the Rayleigh diffraction bound that is a consequence of the imager's finite spatial extent. We show some N-photon strategies that permit resolution of details that are smaller than this bound, attaining either a 1/sqrt(N) enhancement (standard quantum limit) or a 1/N enhancement (Heisenberg limit) over standard techniques. In the incoherent imaging regime, the methods presented are loss resistant, because they can be implemented with classical-state light sources. Our results may be of importance in many applications: microscopy, telescopy, lithography, metrology, etc.

Quantum random access memory

A random access memory (RAM) uses n bits to randomly address N=2^n distinct memory cells. A quantum random access memory (qRAM) uses n qubits to address any quantum superposition of N memory cells. We present an architecture that exponentially reduces the requirements for a memory call: O(log N) switches need be thrown instead of the N used in conventional (classical or quantum) RAM designs. This yields a more robust qRAM algorithm, as it in general requires entanglement among exponentially less gates, and leads to an exponential decrease in the power needed for addressing. A quantum optical implementation is presented.

A new approach to characterize qubit channels

We analyze qubit channels by exploiting the possibility of representing two-level quantum systems in terms of characteristic functions. To do so, we use functions of non-commuting variables (Grassmann variables), defined in terms of generalized displacement operators, following an approach which resemble the one adopted for continuous-variable (Bosonic) systems. It allows us to introduce the notion of qubit Gaussian channels and to show that they share similar properties with the corresponding continuous-variable counterpart. Some examples of qubit channels are investigated using this approach.

Electronic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer for multi-mode entanglement detection

We show that multi-mode entanglement of electrons in a mesoscopic conductor can be detected by a measurement of the zero-frequency current correlations in an electronic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. By this mean, one can further establish a lower bound to the entanglement of formation of two-electron input states. Our results extend the work of Burkard and Loss [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 087903 (2003)] to many channels and provide a way to test the existence of entangled states involving both orbital and spin degrees of freedom.

Characterizing electron entanglement in multiterminal mesoscopic conductors

We show that current correlations at the exit ports of a beam splitter can be used to detect electronic entanglement for a fairly general input state. This includes the situation where electron pairs can enter the beam splitter from the same port or be separated due to backscattering. The proposed scheme allows to discriminate between occupation-number and degree-of-freedom entanglement.

Mediated Homogenization

Homogenization protocols model the quantum mechanical evolution of a system to a fixed state independently from its initial configuration by repeatedly coupling it with a collection of identical ancillas. Here we analyze these protocols within the formalism of "relaxing" channels providing an easy to check sufficient condition for homogenization. In this context we describe mediated homogenization schemes where a network of connected qudits relaxes to a fixed state by only partially interacting with a bath. We also study configurations which allow us to introduce entanglement among the elements of the network. Finally we analyze the effect of having competitive configurations with two different baths and we prove the convergence to dynamical equilibrium for Heisenberg chains.

Qubit quantum channels: A characteristic function approach

A characterization of qubit quantum channels is introduced. In analogy to what happens in the context of Bosonic channels we exploit the possibility of representing the states of the system in terms of characteristic function. The latter are functions of non-commuting variables (Grassmann variables) and are defined in terms of generalized displacement operators. In this context we introduce the set of Gaussian channels and show that they share similar properties with the corresponding Bosonic counterpart.

Quantum private queries

We propose a cheat sensitive quantum protocol to perform a private search on a classical database which is efficient in terms of communication complexity. It allows a user to retrieve an item from the server in possession of the database without revealing which item she retrieved: if the server tries to obtain information on the query, the person querying the database can find it out. Furthermore our protocol ensures perfect data privacy of the database, i.e. the information that the user can retrieve in a single queries is bounded and does not depend on the size of the database. With respect to the known (quantum and classical) strategies for private information retrieval, our protocol displays an exponential reduction both in communication complexity and in running-time computational complexity.

Multi-channel architecture for electronic quantum-Hall interferometry

We propose a new architecture for implementing electronic interferometry in quantum Hall bars. It exploits scattering among parallel edge channels. In contrast to previous developments, this one employs a simply-connected mesa admitting serial concatenation of building elements closer to optical analogues. Implementations of Mach-Zehnder and Hambury-Brown-Twiss interferometers are discussed together with new structures yet unexplored in quantum electronics.

Full control by locally induced relaxation

We demonstrate a scheme for controlling a large quantum system by acting on a small subsystem only. The local control is mediated to the larger system by some fixed coupling Hamiltonian. The scheme allows to transfer arbitrary and unknown quantum states from a memory on the large system (``upload access'') as well as the inverse (``download access''). We study sufficient conditions of the coupling Hamiltonian and give lower bounds on the fidelities for downloading and uploading.

The Generalized Lyapunov Theorem and its Application to Quantum Channels

We give a simple and physically intuitive necessary and sufficient condition for a map acting on a compact metric space to be mixing (i.e. infinitely many applications of the map transfer any input into a fixed convergency point). This is a generalization of the "Lyapunov direct method". First we prove this theorem in topological spaces and for arbitrary continuous maps. Finally we apply our theorem to maps which are relevant in Open Quantum Systems and Quantum Information, namely Quantum Channels. In this context we also discuss the relations between mixing and ergodicity (i.e. the property that there exist only a single input state which is left invariant by a single application of the map) showing that the two are equivalent when the invariant point of the ergodic map is pure.

Degradability of Bosonic Gaussian channels

The notion of weak-degradability of quantum channels is introduced by generalizing the degradability definition given by Devetak and Shor. Exploiting the unitary equivalence with beam-splitter/amplifier channels we then prove that a large class of one-mode Bosonic Gaussian channels are either weakly degradable or anti-degradable. In the latter case this implies that their quantum capacity Q is null. In the former case instead, this allows us to establish the additivity of the coherent information for those maps which admit unitary representation with single-mode pure environment.

Decoherence induced by interacting quantum spin baths

We study decoherence induced on a two-level system coupled to a one-dimensional quantum spin chain. We consider the cases where the dynamics of the chain is determined by the Ising, XY, or Heisenberg exchange Hamiltonian. This model of quantum baths can be of fundamental importance for the understanding of decoherence in open quantum systems, since it can be experimentally engineered by using atoms in optical lattices. As an example, here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a qubit system coupled to an interacting spin bath. We provide results that go beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the bath, in particular showing what happens when the bath enters different phases, or becomes critical; we also study the dependence of the coherence loss on the number of bath spins to which the system is coupled and we describe a coupling-independent regime in which decoherence exhibits universal features, irrespective of the system-environment coupling strength. Finally, we establish a relation between decoherence and entanglement inside the bath. For the Ising and the XY models we are able to give an exact expression for the decay of coherences, while for the Heisenberg bath we resort to the numerical time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group.

Information transfer rates in spin quantum channels

We analyze the communication efficiency of quantum information transfer along unmodulated spin chains by computing the communication rates of various protocols. The effects of temporal correlations are discussed, showing that they can be exploited to boost the transmission efficiency.

Entanglement and statistics in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry

Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry allows one to detect the presence of entanglement in two-photon input states. The same result holds for two-particles input states which obey to Fermionic statistics. In the latter case however anti-bouncing introduces qualitative differences in the interferometer response. This effect is analyzed in a Gedankenexperiment where the particles entering the interferometer are assumed to belong to a one-parameter family of quons which continuously interpolate between the Bosonic and Fermionic statistics.
